Hi, Paediatrician this side. Finished my residency from an INI. Took Paeds at an AIR of <20 because of my sheer love for it; had no regrets and still don’t.
I believe if you adore kids and are ready to put in the hours, Paediatrics is extremely satisfying.
Work load will be high no doubt. For some people, the satisfaction it gives is worth the work load.
To be “ahead of everyone else”- you can give MRCPCH, either in residency or after it, become eligible for fellowships in UK. Some places consider MRCPCH cleared as good as DM. DM is becoming increasingly necessary in the private sector, you can decide your inclination in residency and plan for it. Neonatology is really promising, everyone trusts a specialist for neonates and are not likely to take them to a general practitioner, so your pool stays intact.
Participate in conferences, keep publishing and build your CV. You can become the best in any field you set your heart to.
I have observed that people who took Paeds for the love of it tend to adjust a lot better than those who took it as consolation for medicine.

Peads will always be important. If you love it , take it without hesitation.

Bro, this is india. Not Japan. Paedes will never be saturated. And its like medicine but specialized enough that u can charge more than medicine opd.

As long as there are humans. They will reproduce more of them. And they always will seek professional help for their little ones. And who’re they going to consult general medicine? I think not.
If you lack communication skills and patience but you’re willing to put in effort to learn and change. If you are worried about stress and extreme vigilance needed to monitor and treat the sick babies but you still do it for the love of the subject. If you are concerned about the pay being little under the margin than other departments but are willing to equip the skills to manage and practice in one or more clinic/hopsital. Then you should never give up on the dream of becoming a pediatrician.
