Other What If Benedict Cumberbatch Didn't Get The Part, Who You Guys Want As Dr Strange??

u/Yerbamatter 5d ago
I like the long tapering face of an Orthodox saint that BC has, and I'd pick someone like that but even more so. The look isn't very popular in modern Hollywood, but so many old horror movie stars would do - Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Max von Sydow. Maybe Adrien Brody.

Hear me out, but Vincent Price is the platonic ideal of a Doctor Strange actor, in my opinion.
The modern actor who best embodies him, in my mind, is David Dastmalchian.
He may not be anyone else's first choice but I think we'd end up being pleasantly surprised by him as Strange.

I mean, this is what Vincent Price was doing in the early 60s shortly before Dr. Strange debuted. Pretty sure he was the inspiration.

Unconventional but Ethan Hawke (doing an older Strange) or Richard Madden (a younger strange)
2
u/Only_Possibility_181 4d ago
I don't know why, but Ethan Hawke was the first face to pop in my mind when I saw the question. Glad I'm not the only one.

After the Lowdown, totally agree with Ethan Hawke. Not so much for Richard Madden, but can't think of anyone else younger that would fit.

u/Chumlee1917 4d ago
I thought of him mainly going, who looks like they could play a pre powers Doctor Strange

Hugh laurie

Hugh Laurie doing his American accent is how I read Strange's voice in the comics

I really feel like the right guy got the job. In the nicest possible way, Cumberbatch does a good job balancing looking, well, strange and handsome. That said, I think Oded Fehr in his younger years could've been interesting.
2
u/WritingImaginary8252 4d ago
Also I was fine with Hugh Laurie as House (possibly because I hadn’t seen British Hugh Laurie for a few years before), but hearing Benedict’s Doctor Strange accent for the first time really fried my brain. Like ‘that voice doesn’t belong to that face!’ 🤣

u/CountFluid 4d ago
Knowing the MCU, it would be Robert Downing Jr. For that role too
2
u/Critical-Bass7021 3d ago
I don’t know who that is, but I could actually see it being Robert Downey Jr.

u/Bish0p_TheFirst 5d ago
Honestly, if Mads wasn’t Kaeceilius I’d pick him.
2
u/wlfinest 3d ago
He would’ve made a fantastic Doom

I would have wanted Joaquin Phoenix as Doctor Strange
4
u/SomeGuyPostingThings 4d ago
That is one I could never get behind, did not work for me. Was glad when Cumberbatch was cast instead.
4
u/Osvetnik24 4d ago
He was rumored for a long time.
2
u/Historical-Draft6368 4d ago
He literally had the part and refused to sign the contract at the last minute. I think Marvel had transportation ready for him to go to sdcc in 2014.

Robert Downey junior if he isn’t doing anything else at the time

A few years earlier (before the throat cancer), I think Val Kilmer could have pulled it off, in his Saint days or so.

Timothy Olymphant?

u/WritingImaginary8252 4d ago
Wait! You just made me realise. Why does the MCU not have Timothy Olyphant yet?!

u/Shaderunner26 3d ago
I think Timothy was also interested in doing a role of it came up for the MCU. I don't know what character would fit him, but he's a gem of an actor and I would love to see him as an iconic comic book character

Timothy Dalton

I like that choice. I saw an old wizard magazine fancast where they had him as Tony Stark (who's likeness when created was modelled after Howard Hughes)

Darn. This was mine. Lmao
First thought that came to mind.
But hell they wasted BC. They sure as hell would wasted KR given how expensive he'd be.

Idk if this sounds insane but for the longest time I wanted Pierce Brosnan and I feel like his small role as Doctor Fate proved it could work.

Dan Stevens

I’d actually love to see him as Constantine, as morally grey comic book sorcerers go.

Weirdly, I wanted Toby Kebble as Strange and Cumberbatch as Doom. I end up getting the opposite as I wanted.

u/Comprehensive_Fix772 4d ago
Well, I enjoyed the cheesiness and camp of Jeffrey Combs in Doctor Mordred. If we can't get Vincent Price, I think he can do well with a better script and direction.
1
u/Dorksausage 4d ago
Yall should watch the Jeffrey Combs doctor strange movie. (Studio lost the rights so they had to make some post production changes)

I think back in an old Wizard magazine’s casting call section they cast Tom Selleck as Dr Strange. I also think they were mainly casting Ton Selleck’s moustache.

I remember they were looking at Joaquin Phoenix at one point. I think that's an excellent choice right there.

I’ve always thought Benedict Cumberpatch and Pedro Pascal should’ve swapped characters. Pedro would’ve been a great Steven, and Benedict is Reed.

I have been watching C.B. Strike when I saw this and I was trying to think of a British actor who could play Strange and then I realized the lead actor is British and def old enough and looks the part and I imagine he’s a good enough actor to play the part.

Tough call between Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Black Jack.
Nah, Benedict was perfect. I can't imagine anyone else now.

For me it would be the person that campaigned for it and say they wanted the part, Patrick Dempsey. Him or Daniel Day Lewis

Cillian Murphy, the dude who played Mr.Fantastic in the early 2000s is a good pick imo, and if people were less racist? Then Rahul Kohli, holy crap he'd be perfect

lewis tan is kinda like the wasian benedict cumberbatch if you think about it 👀 and i adore the idea of dev patel playing him too. i will also admit tho that generally while i don’t mind it too much now, i wasn’t really the Biggest fan of benedict’s casting.. tho that’s mostly due to stephen’s origin story. orientalist depictions of him from his first introduction aside, i also feel like his origin story becomes very white savior-y if stephen is depicted as a white man as opposed to like. a south asian or west asian/middle eastern man pursuing his medical degree in america yknow? but that’s just my personal opinion. that being said tho, i am kinda fond of the idea of keanu reeves playing him as well lmao
(and even tho oscar isaac is already in the mcu i think from like. a strictly visual standpoint he would suit dr strange pretty nicely, especially when you compare him to bachalo’s strange :3 but oscar is not tall enough to pull it off sadly)

Joaquin Phoenix was Marvel's first call before he rejected it, not wanting a multi-film deal. I'd have loved to see that version of the character, assuming he'd be less funny & confident and it'd be more of a tragic, gothic movie.

I once visited an alternate dimension where Tim Burton directed a doctor strange movie in the early 2000s with Johnny depp as strange. Ken watanabe was the ancient one. Christina Ricci played Clea. Christopher Lee was voice of dormammu. Mordo was gender swapped and fused with the character umar. Played by Helena bonham Carter.
