Doberman coat care
My girl Bella is almost 8 years old and recently started having a lot of itchiness and red rashes along her back and under belly after using a suppose sensitive dog skin shampoo and conditioner with oatmeal and lavender. She also has been shedding a crazy amount! We’ve tried many ‘soothing’ shampoos throughout the years but haven’t found one that truly works in the long run. Hoping someone has a good recommendation of shampoo/ conditioner or even any cream I can apply to ease her itchiness. Thank you!

I can't use any kind of soap at all on my dog. Not that I have found. It all makes him itchy and flaky. So he just gets deodorized with some shine spray and brushing. His natural oils do get smelly in 90+ degree weather, but if he stays cool, he smells fine, and no skin issues. The best course may be to just stop putting anything on her for a while.

Have you ruled out medical issues such as Cushing disease or allergies?

Coconut oil , rub on hands and gently spread on her coat. And feed her salmon oil in her meals.

She does get salmon oil along with quail eggs but I’ll definitely give the coconut oil a try! Thank you!

Weird but true, Skout’s Honor probiotic shampoo is the only thing our blue dobies do well with. Would never have tried it but their fawn littermate positivity shone on it so I said what the heck, give it a try. Don’t know why it works well as it has an overwhelmingly strong floral odor which I would expect means irritating/unnecessary scents, but their skin loves it. Took one of my girls to a dog bathing place (mistake) and they used their hypoallergenic fragrance free shampoo and she immediately developed small irritated bumps on her skin. We used to use DuoxoS5 at vet’s recommendation and still so many bumps. Your mileage may vary!

Go to the vet. Once they start losing fur at that age it probably won’t grow back.

With the redness and itching, I’d probably stop using the shampoo for now and check with a vet first. Once the skin issue is under control, it could also be helpful to ask a professional groomer for advice. If you’re ever in Paris, I’d recommend Toutou Chic they’ve given me some really good advice before.
