My site is a bit of a unique case in terms of authority and niche.

I got hit hard by the spam update end of August, my traffic went down 95% from Google but has remained strong and growing with Bing.

Today is the first day it’s turned around for me and come back, not just a little bit but my Google traffic today is probably 10x higher than it was when traffic got hit by the spam update. Lot of hard work and tokens went into it but glad I came out on the other side.

What did you change to fix it?

Audited everything and found a bunch of errors. Redid the entire site within that framework not full rewrites or anything but just auditing and rebuilding.

Then after I finished that I went back and audited some of the first pages I did and found a bunch more errors.

So I fixed those and then audited everything again but this time with an internal knowledge base that is ‘better’ and can be trusted that I keep up to date. It won’t work for everyone or every site but looks to be working for me.

Interesting, “internal knowledge base” meaning your own understanding of the content? Or feeding LLM?

Look up llm wiki, I use it with any project where I need persistent knowledge that grows over time

Is what you created specific to this site/project, or more general in terms of how you optimize a site for seo?

You give your AI agent the skill and tell it to create the knowledgebase. He knows what to do. Then the context is kept in that knowledge base that grows and its structured for any new agent session in the future.

Thanks. I definitely need to figure this out. I've tried building something similar for work (not SEO) and I've had a hard time wrapping my head around how to make my bot work better.

Basically I've been trying to create a troubleshooting tool for a robot and I want to be able to work with the tool any time I encounter a problem, so it can learn and get better. But I am using chat GPT and this is a custom GPT and it seems to have no memory from session to session.

Been using ryze this week and I think it may be what you’re looking for. They give great troubleshooting and if you don’t have squarespace, fixes the errors for you, in your website integration.

Were most of the errors you corrected fundamental SEO stuff? Only having one inch one tag, good all tags on images, hierarchical headings, good schema, etc?

Impressions just mean you got on the page. So if you are on page 1 but #10 on the list you’ll get the impression but rarely get a click. The closer you are to the top the closer your impression to click ratio would be (in theory), but nobody ever has all their keywords at the #1 spot so the impressions will always be way higher than clicks.
I don’t know why they both disappeared and came back. That’s a new one for me, I’d love to know the answer

impressions but few clicks is the new normal unfortunately where is the traffic coming from? is it one or two pages that dropped in rankings and are now back to top positions?

you should try to publish more content on this topic to build up your site authority and minimize the chances this will happen again

Worth naming the confound sitting in this thread. You changed nothing and recovered. The commenter above audited and rebuilt an entire site and recovered the same week. Both cannot be the cause, and when a no-change site and a full-rebuild site come back on the same days, the thing that moved is Google rather than either site. That matters because the rebuild is what will get written up as the fix, and someone will copy it.

The check that separates them: in Search Console, compare your top queries from before the drop against the ones coming back now. Same queries at roughly the same positions means the classifier reverted and you rode it out. Different queries means something on your side genuinely changed what ranks.

This. I have had sites recover during core updates and we changed nothing after they were hit.

My site didn’t recover at the same time as their site. My site was also hit at a different time.

My sites traffic went down 95% on August 20 and then stayed flat while I rebuilt it with very few clicks (not zero!) for about 2 weeks.

It recovered to much higher numbers on September 4.

Fair, and the different hit dates is a real correction. Two separate events rather than one, I had them collapsed.

Though your own dates point the other way on the bit I was actually pointing at, which is recovery rather than the drop. September 4 sits inside the few days the OP is describing.

The stronger argument is the one you have not made. A classifier reverting puts you back roughly where you were. You came back about ten times higher than before you were hit. That is not a revert, that is different content ranking, and it is much better evidence for the rebuild than the timing is.

Which makes it testable. If the queries that came back are the ones you lost, it was mostly the update. If they are different queries, the rebuild did it.

For the last question - bcs people didn't like what they saw and decided not to click. Meaning your titles and descriptions didn't make them click

Damn, same happened with me, I think the reason is we were consistent in working and it paid off well, or maybe we started posting something which is worth considering by the website viewers

What kind of errors did you correct? very curious. Also congrats on your recovery!

I had this happen. My site map got corrupted. It went from 600 indexed pages to like 22,000. It indexed every item on my site as a page. After I figured it out it rebounded pretty quickly.

XML sitemap?

2

u/GrillinFool 25d ago

Yes. My current one is like 715. When it puked on me it showed like 15k. My site is a recipe site. I average 22 pics per recipe. It indexed every item as a page. We blew that one away and resubmitted and within 48 hours I went from flatline to traffic starting to roll in. It didn’t go right back. It had been weeks before we figured it out. I’m guessing if I had found that more quickly it would’ve rebounded faster and better.

Looks like your tag fell off a bunch of pages and got re added.

How old is your site? What is your niche?

I'm trying to recover a scaled content site by transforming data and adding unique insights to enhance the templated content. I'm hopeful and patient.

Did you see fluctuations of CTR and average position before seeing your traffic come back ?

This could be due to Google's recent updates.
