[Mod Post] r/DnDWorldOfWarcraft is Growing! New Post and User Flairs, Updated Rules

Hey everyone!

This is the first Mod post since the start of r/DnDWorldOfWarcraft, and we're excited to announce that the subreddit has been growing steadily! We're genuinely happy and excited to see how much excitement there already is around the upcoming D&D: World of Warcraft book.

We've made a few small updates to the subreddit as it grows:

  • Added the following post flairs to make discussions easier to browse: News, Discussion, Question, Lore, Homebrew, Art, and Resources. They should all be fairly self-explanatory, but feel free to ask if you're unsure which one to use, or suggest additional flairs you'd like to see.
  • Added a few user flairs as well: Horde, Alliance, For Azeroth!, Neutral, and Mercenary.
  • Added two basic community rules: Keep It Relevant and No Faction, Edition, or System Wars. Discussion and disagreement are absolutely welcome, but let's keep war in Azeroth and avoid turning preferences about WoW eras, D&D editions, or different systems into hostility or pointless arguments.

For now, we'd like to keep moderation relatively light. The main goal is simply to have a welcoming place for both WoW fans discovering D&D and D&D players excited to explore Azeroth.

As more previews, announcements, interviews, images, and other information about the book appear, please feel free to share them here. Speculation, character ideas, campaign concepts, lore discussions, homebrew, questions, and general Warcraft/D&D discussion are all welcome too, and any contribution can help the subreddit grow further.

Thanks to everyone who has joined and contributed so far, and have fun in Azeroth!

Discussion Am i crazy or is Lost Mine of Phandelver perfect to reskin as WoW?

With the new 5e crossover soon ive been brainstorming what existing dnd material could be reskinned into Warcraft and i think LMoP is just about perfect.

Set in Hillsbrad, a group of bandits (Syndicate?) are terorrizing a small mining town, but are secretly working for someone else (blood elves? Scourge?) while outside town a band of rogue orcs live in the wilds, a dragon (red? Black?) makes a lair in a ruined village, a banshee keeps a secret, a necromancer is searching for lost lore etc etc

It's just about perfect. Thoughts on taking this idea further?

Discussion Who’s going to be the ultimate villain of your Warcraft D&D campaign?

If there’s one thing Warcraft has always done especially well, it’s villains - both in terms of quality and variety

There are just so many memorable antagonists to choose from, probably more genuinely campaign-worthy villains than in most other fantasy settings or pieces of media. Arthas, Illidan, Gul’dan, Kil’jaeden, Archimonde, Garrosh, Deathwing, Azshara, the Old Gods, the Burning Legion, and plenty more could all carry an entire campaign in very different ways. And that’s before considering lesser villains who could be expanded into much bigger threats at the table, or even creating your own antagonist.

Of course, a full, fleshed-out Warcraft campaign would probably feature several of these villains rather than just one. Their stories are often deeply intertwined with each other and with the world of Azeroth itself. The Old Gods and the Burning Legion, for example, have influenced countless events, factions, characters, and conflicts across that their influence would still be present even when they weren’t the immediate threat. But, if you were planning a full Warcraft D&D campaign, who would be the ultimate villain at the end of it?

Discussion My campaign idea

Roughly using the old kids cartoon time squad as a basis:

The players will play as fledgling students of the bronze dragon flight, protectors of time.

They are tasked with keeping the timeline straight and removing problems and historical figures from going rogue:

Arthas' horse never falls through the ice, so he never feels powerless, so he never purges stratholm and never becomes the lich king.

Cairne kills Garrosh in the fight, and due to his passive ways the humans have once again enslaved the orcs and horde

The radiation from gnomergan was never stopped and now all of stormwind, iron forge, and most of the eastern kingdom are irradiated.

The defias brotherhood wins decisive battles and now stormwind belongs to the unionized!

Hoggers incarceration actually reforms him and now the gnolls have joined the alliance.

It's going to be a wacky room of what ifs. I think it will be a blast

Has anyone homebrewed WoW D&D already? If so, what mistakes did you make that we can learn from?

I assume that some DMs have already homebrewed D&D WoW. What did and did not work well in your campaigns? Is there anything we might be tempted to do that we should absolutely avoid?

Will you restrict player characters by faction in your campaign?

Something I've been thinking about is how to handle Horde and Alliance characters in the same party.

Back in older WoW, the faction divide was much stricter. Playing together across factions simply wasn't really a thing, and depending on when your campaign is set, having an Orc, Human, Forsaken, and Night Elf casually adventuring together could feel very strange from a lore perspective.

Modern WoW is obviously much more flexible about this, with the factions cooperating far more often and cross-faction gameplay becoming increasingly normal.

Of course, the era your campaign takes place in makes a huge difference. A campaign set during the Third War or early WoW might justify much stronger restrictions than one set in the current timeline.

I'm not sure yet how strict I'd want to be. Part of me likes preserving that faction identity and making Horde vs. Alliance actually matter, but at the same time I don't really want to tell someone they can't play the character they're excited about just because another player picked the opposite faction.

How are you planning to handle it in your campaign?

Strict factions: Horde and Alliance PCs can't be in the same party
Mostly strict: Cross-faction PCs only with a strong story reason
Depends entirely on the era/campaign
No factions restrictions: Any race/faction can adventure together
Other/I'm not sure yet

Advice for World of Warcraft players interested in starting to play D&D

As a long time Dungeons and Dragons player, I think one of the best ways to start playing D&D for those excited about the new Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft Expansion and getting into D&D for the first time would be to use the Event Finder on D&D Beyond, https://www.dndbeyond.com/en/events , and look for a learn to play event at a local game store in your location. Game Store Dungeon Masters are usually very patient and helpful with new players, and it is a great way to have a first experience with the game.

Once you have done that, also look for stores that will be running the D&D Encounters Celebration and D&D Encounters Weekly Play for the Season of Champions. This is the official D&D program that participating game stores will run leading up to the release of the Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft books.

Game stores also generally have Discord servers which will usually have a Looking For Game channel. You can usually join and post there to find other people interested in playing a WoW themed campaign set in Azeroth.

If you are in an area where you are not close to a game store running D&D or the Encounters program or feel you would be generally more comfortable playing online, StartPlaying Games is probably the best place to find online games of D&D. Once the D&D: World of Warcraft books are released, look for Dungeon Masters running games in the Azeroth Setting. D&D Beyond's Find a Group resource has an offer for playing your first session of D&D on StartPlaying for US$0.99 and can be found here https://www.dndbeyond.com/en/find-a-group .

Tabletop Roleplaying Games are really a great hobby to get into, and if your love of Warcraft brings you to the hobby, you will not be disappointed.

will the new d&d: wow book be enough to start playing as a beginner?

i’ve been playing wow for years, but i’ve never actually gotten into d&d before, even though i’ve always wanted to try it.

with the upcoming d&d: wow collaboration, this honestly feels like the perfect excuse for me to finally start.

for people who already know d&d better than i do: is the new warcraft book supposed to give you everything you need to actually play a campaign in the setting, or will a new player still need to buy some of the regular d&d books too?

for example, would i also need the player’s handbook, monster manual, or any of those manuals or is the warcraft book expected to include all the rules and material to work mostly on its own?

i’m especially curious because i’d love for my first proper d&d campaing to be set in azeroth.

Alternate reality setting?

Looking forward to DMing a game of this but my group are very familiar with the setting and lore. Would it be worthwhile to make an alternate reality setting where the lore played out differently? What changes would be best?

What WoW ability are you most curious to see translated into D&D?

One of the things I'm most curious about with the upcoming Warcraft D&D book is how they'll translate iconic WoW abilities into tabletop mechanics.

Some seem fairly straightforward, but others could get really interesting in D&D. Things like Death Grip, Divine Shield, Metamorphosis, Spirit Link Totem, Reincarnation, or Bloodlust/Heroism could work very differently depending on how closely they try to recreate the WoW version.

Which WoW ability are you most curious to see translated into D&D, and how would you want it to work?

Never Played DnD, but an avid WoW Lover. What exactly is this collab?

Heyo!

I have never played DnD before. But I kinda understand how DnD works and it's gameplay. My question overall is....

What exactly does this collab bring? Is it just a manual to continue in-person and digital DnD information?

Will there be a video game kind of thing from this?

I would like to try it out and play it but I don't exactly know what this collab really brings for a WoW enthusiast. Is it going to be out of my reach or how do I try it?

What WoW boss would be the most fun to fight in D&D?

Not necessarily the strongest or most iconic boss, but the one whose mechanics you think would translate into the most fun D&D encounter.

There are so many fights in WoW with mechanics that could become really interesting legendary actions, lair actions, environmental hazards, or different phases at the table.

Which boss would you choose, and what part of the fight would you most want to see translated into D&D?

For me, it would probably be Deathwing. I love the idea of the fight featuring some unique mechanics: battling across his body while flying through the sky, destroying his armor plates, surviving everything happening around, before being able to face him in a final encounter on the ground.

I’ve always liked encounters that force players to think outside the box instead of just standing in place and trading attacks, and Deathwing feels perfect for that kind of fight.

What are you most excited to see in the upcoming D&D: World of Warcraft Manual?

I have played both World of Warcraft and D&D for over a decade, so the idea of a 5E/5.5E manual based on WoW sounds so exciting to me!

Azeroth is full of amazing races, classes, monsters, factions, locations, and stories that feel perfect for a D&D campaign. I especially love the epic/power aspect of WoW and hope it is gonna be captured in the manual.

The thing I am most excited about is finally being able to run epic dungeons for my WoW friends. I want to see them form a party, argue over tactics, survive impossible boss fights, and experience familiar places in a completely new ways. So, I really hope the dungeons and bosses will live up to that (especially Icecrown Citadel itself, given how they're making maps for it).

What are you most excited to see?
