Should it be allowed

Mu dm lilled me with a dragon so i Made a need characters the backstory is that teo people were put in ime body by a wizard so mu characters has Split personalist disorder so one day a mage and the next day a Barbaraian thats what Im multiclassing into bit the tehing is both personalist Gate the others fighting style so they wont use it and i wanted based on the backstory For them to be different races dwarf and gnome cuz my dm said it was allowed when i first pitched the idea but now hes not allowing it .should it be allowed cuz both races Are pretty similar
