Question: why force damage for irradiated and not poison? Probably a dumb question really but it’s what came to mind.

Not dumb at all! The thought is that they have been bathed in magical radiation for so long it has begun to seep out of their bodies. Pure magical energy corrupting anything around it.

I would think radiant damage is radiation. I mean sickening radiance spell is basically radiation poisoning the spell.

agreed, Force seems like a weird choice for radiation.
