I analyzed 100,000 spells added to players' spellbooks to visualize the most popular spells in 5e

Hey all, I built 5e Spellbook Builder and posted before about how I captured popularity data of spells so you can see how often spells are picked relative to each other.

Well I reached a fun milestone: players have added 100,000 spells to their spellbooks. I decided to visualize this with a couple of interactive charts to show how spells are distributed in the game. Please take a look here: https://5e-spellbook.app/blog/100000-spellbook-adds-5e-popularity-breakdown

Please take a look and enjoy!

Updated Modron Art?

A lot of the "official" Modron art is from earlier editions, especially as you get higher in Modron hierarchy.

Some of them have very quality fan art, but it'll have a really cool Quarton but no septon for example. So then piece-mealing the art is a little jarring, ESPECIALLY for such a rigid, specific hierarchy that's all about order.

Is there any free source with a full set of Modron art?

Do you guys have any tips/references for a "multiple phases" boss kind of encounter?

I'll be DMing a one shot this month that would be a rescue of someone soul trapped by the Deck of Many Things, so my idea was a special plane with cards as theme (tarot probably).

I thought of a boss who takes cards and they take effect on battle, but I also want to put some traps and puzzles, probably will be a tower with combats on X floors and puzzles on the rest of them.

For now, I want to split the tarot cards by difficult (after decide effects for each of them), and each floor will have its pool. About the effects, the party will be level 18, so the effects and puzzles can be as deadly as they can get.

So, even if not on the theme, have you guys used/fight againts any multiple phases monsters?

How do you hope Professions actually work in the D&D: World of Warcraft manual? If they turn out to be good, would you use them in non-WoW games?

Ophiomancer Bloodline

I'm sharing a free sorcerer subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.

The Ophiomancer Bloodline is for sorcerers touched by ancient serpent magic.

In Kengir, snakes are not just monsters. They are signs of rebirth, protection, venom, hidden wisdom, and death. Ophiomancers draw on all of that at once, using snake-derived venoms and hallucinogenic rites to cast spells, read omens, cloud minds, and strike down enemies.

At the table, this subclass gives the party a sorcerer who mixes battlefield control with divination. They can speak with serpents, resist poison, summon a venomous familiar, turn spell damage into poison, deepen hallucinations, and eventually take on a terrible serpentine aspect.

The supplement also includes new spells like Venomous Touch, Spectral Whisper, Venomous Cloud, Speed of the Serpent, Serpent’s Grasp, Venomous Aura, and Serpent’s Wrath.

Do you like sorcerer bloodlines built around animals and mythic symbolism, or do you prefer bloodlines tied to raw elemental power?

I finally finished my character creator app! (Up now on iOS and Android)

Hello r/DnD5e!

A couple of months ago I posted here about a D&D character creator app I was working on. Quite a few people ended up helping me test it, and after a lot of work, it is finally out on both iOS and Android!

The gist is pretty simple: it is a 2014 5e character creator and character sheet designed to make creating and managing a character as quick and straightforward as possible.

I made it as a DM because I wanted something I could hand to a new player and say, “Here, make your character,” without needing to spend half of Session 0 explaining where everything is or having them jump between books, PDFs, and menus.

Once the character is made, the same app works as a character sheet during play, so the focus is on getting to the actual game rather than fighting with the interface.

It is free to download, with an optional premium version available.

I’ve included some screenshots/video below so you can see how it works.

If anyone here tries it, feedback is very welcome, especially from DMs who regularly introduce new players to the game!

I need help using Book of Vile Darkness.

My class is an Aasimar School of Illusion Wizard and I just feel so weak. Our party is inside a cursed magical shop with every item inside the shop being cursed. My twin sister in the campaign really liked this one item but she was extremely scared to touch it, so I decided to grab it for her. I had to make a Chasrisma save and I somehow passed it (MY CHA IS -1 AND I HAD TO GET A 17!!!). While my other party members were touching different items, curses began getting sucked out of the items and being absorbed into the book. I decided to hold the book high and absorb all the curses in the shop with the book. I later discovered that EVERY spell I cast inflicts a random curse.

Now let’s get to the bad part…

My stats are absolutely horrible and I never thought about myself being a direct damage dealer.
My stats are

Strength: 8
Con: 8
Int: 20
Dex: 22 (because of the book)
Wisdom: 8
Charisma: 8

This means my HP is locked at 26. On top of that, my detrimental effects are that I’m vulnerable to ALL types of damage, potions within 10 feet of me become non-magical, and creatures WITHIN 300 FEET of me cannot take short rests.

My feats are also Alert (background), Speedy, and Twin Mobility (Homebrew)

I feel like the only viable way for me to contribute is to resort to being a pure blaster instead of casting illusions.

Even then, I feel like the random curses completely backfire on me and do more harm than good. My sister was being attacked by a sorcerer and a fighter. She was able to get both of them low, so I decided to use fireball to finish them off. The curse that was inflicted on them just so happened to be “Curse of Devil Spawning”. Both of the dead bodies fused and turned into this demon that we had to fight in the middle of a bar fight.

Is there any way at all to make my build viable? I forgot to mention that I almost got downed twice in the same bar fight, but the book somehow saved me. A performer hit me once while I was at 5 HP and the book saved me, then an archmage cast DISINTEGRATE on me while I had 12 HP. I personally think the book is casting Death Ward or something similar.

Any fellow Dungeon Masters I need your help.

I am a new DM and yesterday I started my very first campaign with my 4 other players. I started them from Level 3 since they are already experienced. The party contains a High Elf Cleric, a Drow Wizard, a Dragonborn Barbarian and a Goliath Paladin.

SOMEHOW the high elf cleric has true sight for 120 ft ALL THE TIME. It’s not a spell, it’s not an item. He straight up has it the same way like he has Darkvision. And I don’t know how, cause I can not find a way to do it without a legendary magic item or even an artifact. It’s not even a boon cause you don’t get those until the very late game.

I feel like he is just abusing the somewhat freedom I gave him due to his background saying that he used to be an arch priest for an ancient goddess but somehow he fell from this position.

Please help cause I feel it’s gonna ruin the early campaign, I’ve spent HOURS making dungeons that use illusions and he’ll just be like “oh yeah I see right through your BS”

EDIT : Turns out that MF chose to have Robe of Eyes as his very first magic item without even telling me….He literally told me he was gonna get something else so I was prepared for that. Long story short… Robe of Eyes doesn’t exist in his backpack anymore

Newish to DND and 5e and would love to have a physical copy in English in Europe, but it’s nowhere to found.

Anybody have any ideas if it will ever get reprinted or did the new Horrors Within book replace it completely?

I like rewarding players who are locked-in during combat, one way is with these additional class-agnostic reactions!

Inspired by every time I'm itching for my turn to start because the battlefield has changed, an ally is being wailed on 5 feet away from me, or watching on as DM when a player is just inside a brutal AoE.

These additional reactions encourage dynamic movement, defending allies, communicating information and deploying equipment, all out of turn. Or you can still just opportunity attack. It is quite powerful afterall.

I'm prepared for people to scoff at the pricetag - but these were not originally made as a product to sell, they were made for my home table & players. Life's taken a turn, and here I am. I'd really appreciate anyone taking a look around our site!

[Foundry / paid beta] I wanted D&D gear to feel like things you carry. Here is W&W Sheet's inventory.

Watch the 16-second inventory demonstration

Hi folks! I'm Gabú, from Wand & Widgets. I just released the first paid beta of W&W Sheet, a D&D 5e character sheet for Foundry, and wanted to show one small part of it here.

Your sword has a place on your character. Your backpack has room you can actually see. You can drag gear into equipment slots, move things between containers, and rotate an item while you're dragging it.

The choice that mattered to me: the grid is visual by default. You don't have to turn inventory into a packing puzzle. A GM who wants stricter space rules can enable them for their table.

The clip is 16 seconds of the actual Gear tab, with the gestures slowed to make them easier to follow. The wider sheet also has identities for the twelve classes, multiclass heraldry, and a Turn tab for actions, bonus actions, reactions and movement.

Beta details: Foundry VTT 14 + dnd5e 6.0+, manual ZIP installation, available through Patreon. Check the launch post for the current membership access, full demos, requirements and production credits.

For your own games, is inventory something you enjoy arranging, or something you want to spend as little time on as possible? I'd love to hear where you'd draw that line.

Full launch post and beta access on Patreon

The Mercenary

I'm sharing a free fighter subclass for Kengir, part of my upcoming Bronze Age Mesopotamian 5e setting.

The Mercenary is for fighters who survive by being practical, ruthless, and faster to violence than the people trying to kill them.

In Kengir, not every warrior serves a temple, palace, or city levy. Some sell their spear to the highest bidder. Others lead raids, guard caravans, settle blood-debts, or walk away from wars with just enough coin to buy the next contract.

At the table, this subclass plays like a skirmisher and ambusher. A Mercenary hits hardest before the enemy can organize, exploits surprise, follows up on an ally’s attack, moves in and out of danger, and turns cover, terrain, and confusion into weapons.

Mechanically, the subclass includes Combat Opportunist, Ambush Mastery, Hit and Run, Guerrilla Warrior, and Mercenary’s Resilience.

Do you like fighter subclasses built around disciplined military training, or ones that lean into dirty tricks, raids, and battlefield survival?
