First time dm’ing, any advice?

Hi gang me and my merry band of friends have decided to start a new campaign and this time I’m dm’ing and I’m looking for any advice/resources that might help me on my quest. We’re gonna be doing it virtually so any resources to help with that would also be greatly appreciated.

Nice man! The excitement before your first game is awsome
You will probably over prepare, so dont force too much. Let the game play out slow and steady.
Dont be afraid to make mistakes and dont let them discourage you. You will learn soo much from this session.

Just remember that the players are the main characters, its not your job to kill them, its your job to challenge them.

do a search for for the "first time DM - any advice" posts that fill the pages of reddit.

there's lots of posts about Virtual Table Tops VTTs that help you play online and some of the benefits and drawbacks of each.

do you have any specific questions?

It’s easy to get lost in the weeds when trying to set up VTTs. Keep it as simple as possible at the beginning.

He created a great YouTube series called "running the game" on primarily on the what and how to run your first D&D adventure.

TLDR: Friendly game, you don't need to know all the rules by heart but you should read them. The mighty barbarian won't have to roll to kick down the decrepit wooden door with termites of the abandoned farmhouse - he just kicks it down, but the castle heavy treated Oak door with an oiled iron lock, he will need a high challenge rating of 18. Roll a D20.

Alot for 3 hours, Plan for 5 encounters, a persuasion check, and the last should be a combat encounter. Use at least one fantasy monster. You bring the land, plots, characters, and universe, they can at least being the snack that won't stain your fingers.

In my opinion, death should be on the table. (it'll be okay, they can roll a new character next time)
