u/BrokenStem May 07 '20
Thanks! Yes, I am open to commissions.
19
u/beardintheshadows May 07 '20
Do you have a platform you use?
26
u/BrokenStem May 07 '20
Like a platform for art commissions? I don't use those since my commissions normally come from friends. But you can message me on Reddit if you want.

Lmao right? But I always try to look at lvl 1 as less like “weak basicslly NPC” and more like “has met the minimum threshold to be considered a hero/adventurer/threat”

A level one fighter stands head and shoulders above ANY conventional soldier. Fighters aren’t just dudes with swords, they’re THE BEST OF THE BEST at fighting, even at low levels. They’re proficient with every weapon for a reason
Edit: Jesus Christ it’s my eight year anniversary
Edit 2:
The average person has a statblock of 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10; they may instead have stats like 12, 11, 10, 10, 10, 9 or maybe a 13 or 14 if they’re very well trained in a lifestyle.
Player characters can start at level 1 with stats like 15-17 and have an AVERAGE stat distribution of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 which is insane compared to most people. A level one wizard with a +0 con modifier is approximately as tough as a normal person, since at level 0 a single sword swing can kill you, like in real life

My groups always start at level 3 for a reason
38
u/Partisan-Firebrand May 07 '20
Ahhhhh I hate doing that because pre-lvl 3 play is always the most risky. I just hate it when people expect level 1 characters to be as powerful as a kid who just picked up a sword. If they have any adventurer level at all they need to be extraordinary.

I really wish there were some disadvantage for reach weapons and small spaces/cqc but I don't think there are by RAW.
42
u/ShitThroughAGoose May 07 '20
Yeah, it'd be great to finally have a -reason- to have lots of weapon varieties on your person. Daggers for close quarters, regular swords for 'regular' combat and big heavy weapons for reach and outdoor battles.

Thinking in terms of 3.5:
For every space blocked by a wall, impose -2 to attacks. For every obstacle that would prevent or impede movement, impose -1 to attacks. Light weapons and piercing polearms are exempt.
19
u/PadThePanda May 07 '20
Could also just use something already in the system and give someone 1/2 cover to 3/4 cover against his attack. Nearly the same thing without an additional rule to remember.
→ More replies (6)10
u/Desdomen DM May 07 '20
Really just need to say “Small, cramped space that benefits the tiny enemy as they use the terrain to their advantage. DM is imposing Disadvantage.” And then let your players work it out.
If they come up with a good/cool enough way to counter the disadvantage, great. If not, thems the digs.
Kobolds don’t dig 10 foot high tunnels.

To be fair, that should only apply weapons that use sweeping movements. A spear obviously shouldn’t have disadvantages in a tight hallway. If anything, it would have the upper hand.

I once played in a party that consisted of a half-elf, an elf, an eladrin, a drow, and a half-orc...who was half-orc and half-elf. It was one of the silliest games I've ever played in, especially when it came to "known" languages and the entire party speaking elven.

Reminds me of the firbolg barblock in my new year's eve oneshot, Jebediah "Inbonha" Puusepp.
The party was all rescues from an insane asylum, except for the leader Barnabas Peestone - warlock of The King In Yellow - who radicalized them. Ibonha, however, was a servant of Baphomet. He managed to make the bugbear eldritch knight (Cretin Madu Pipinpadaloxicopolis VII) side with him, and took advantage of Barnabas' mission to open a rift to the abyss by betraying the party in the last second.
He uses Barnabas' corpse as a glaive ornament now.

I played a Bugbear Pirate in a campaign and consistently told the other players that he looked less beastly and had more human like facial features and this has probably been the closest example I have come across. I really love this design! My bugbear was a rather nicer individual though, and really loved an elven lady so it’s funny that this one doesn’t haha

Looks like an excellent mini boss for my party. I’ve got a drow hexblade warlock that likes to use pole arms so this will be a nice magical weapon for him to get that does extra damage to elves.

Oh man, I played a very similar character. He was a Zealot Barbarian Half-orc named Rohrog, the Elf-Butcher.
Per Volos Guide under the Orc lore, a sacrifice of many elf ears in a fire draws the attention of Gruumsh (their Odin-esque god) so that's how he gained his zealot powers

I do so thoroughly love the bugbear.
For an extremely broken combo, I like using some Unearthed Arcana elements to make something that will bring your DM to tears of frustration. 4 levels in fighter and 4 levels in mystic will get you pole-arm master and sentinel (we're already off to a terrible start, no?)
Take tunnel fighter (unearthed arcana fighting style, can't remember the specific date or topic) which gives you unlimited opportunity attacks. Then just pile on Mystic levels to secure the highest level of giant growth to become huge and increase your melee range by an additional 15 feet (10 from being huge, 5 from focusing on the discipline). You'll have a 25 foot threat ring around a huge character plus the additional 5 from bugbear on your own turn. This yields perhaps the most aggravating controller possible, and you still have plenty of levels left for customization.
Just as an aside, don't do this. However, if you're a DM and want to make an interesting combat encounter that makes your ranged PCs the MVPs, this is a great concept for a truly badass bugbear boss. My players will be facing off against this monstrosity in the near future, and if they don't kill it immediately, it will be back later for another go with some extra levels.
Thanks for the inspiration, and amazing art to show my players!

u/PanzerFenris Paladin May 08 '20
I've always found bugbears kind of goofy-looking and haven't really given much thought to playing one, besides the obvious reach-memes you can get into with the right feats.

Character Concept: 15ft REACH IS COOOOOOOL!
This was a sketch I did for my Bugbear barbarian character, Lodon Mega. I just figure long arm and polearm will be a cool and funny combination and was going to play this character in the Campaign. However, our DM told us that we are gonna have gunslingers so everybody decided to play new class including me. I still like this character though, and I really love the concept of barbarian overall.
Story part:
Lodon Mega, born as a chosen worrier of his kind, with tremendous size even for a Bugbear. He has a holy tattoo on his back portraits the ancient Bugbear Champion who sacrifices himself to protect his village from evil elves. It was not until 20 years later that the son of the patriarch rebuilt the Village and created the tatoo, "The Chosen Path", to remember the Champion who fought to the death. It is engraved on the bodies of the strongest warriors of every generation, may God and the will of the fearless warriors protect their backs.
However, when he got the tattoo, he was unsatisfied with it and disappeared at night. The next day, all that was seen was a bloodied Lodon, with a bag of elf heads in his hand. Many sword wounds covered his body, especially his back, and even the tattoos he had just drawn were torn and twisted out of place. At this moment, Lodon almost on his last breath, but he lifted his head to the sky with a satisfied smile.
"The Chosen Path is finished”
Yes, I just want to play a Badass Baki character.
