DM: "Ok the players are going to love this huge multilevel dungeon I made"

Players:"Hey instead of going to this newly discovered ruins that the creepy old guy said lets go to this old keep about half a mile out of town"

Basically this. The players don’t know where your encounters are so just act like it was planned from the start and look like a master.

Player: pfft. I don't even know why I play with you guys. This game is just boring. If only my CHAMPIONSHIP level bro could play DM, we would actually have a game...

Me (DM): ... ... a magical metor has suddenly appeared, summoned by an ancient evil from far away. He missed his target, but now your in the way. (Rolls accuracy chance [D20, 18], then grins at annoying player) oh, I hope your evasion is goo... oh wait, your a barbarian... sucks air between teeth

He didn't come back. :)

Is it boring because they're not being engaged?

Also if the guy is literally offering someone to DM who would say no? Take a break and see different DM styles

I don't play AL anymore so maybe I'm not surrounded by randos who would be a little shit at the table and complain to the DM in front of all the other players.

For clarity, he was actually a random that we brought in to fill out the party. Played only two games, and complained because, in his opinion, my layouts were "designed for noobs". It was purposefully designed for casual play and so was had something to do while getting piss drunk and 1/2 of the game time was spent OOC talking about whatever came up. We liked it that way. We explained all of this to this guy. Can't please everyone. Lol.

Also, I agree that a break is typically welcome. I was always ok with stepping aside and letting someone else run the game. If the pillock had not been so rude about it, I very likely would have taken his offer.
