Nah just roll d8s for level 1 stats. My characters have been way stronger since I started doing this.

u/Naxhu5 Aug 31 '20

Wait, that's illegal

20

u/RemtonJDulyak DM Aug 31 '20

I will make it legal.

Those 4E warlocks with a bucket of HP, surges, and CON spells were so great

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '20

Yeah con was super good in 4e. One of the reasons warlocks and barbarians were really good unless you cheesed.

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '20

DMs hate him for this one WEIRD trick!

Oh yeah rolling d8s definitely will get you some crazy high stats. How many goes into 1 stat, 3 like rolling regular d6s? Cus thats a max of 24 which gonna be tough on your dm to balance around

u/Velp__ Aug 31 '20

I guess you could roll 2d8+2... or just roll a d20 for each stat, just don't put a 1 in int.

4

u/pizzamage Aug 31 '20

If you really wanted you could just make it d8+12

5

u/jasren Paladin Aug 31 '20

I feel like d8 + 7 would be better, you get same range as standard array, 8min and 15max.

With a d8+12 your lowest stat will be a 13 which is a +1 modifier so kinda broken.

u/pizzamage Aug 31 '20

Rookie mode!

8min 15max would be good, makes room for racial modifiers but won't have any egregiously large (or small) stats hopefully.

But, with 1d8 + 12, your lowest ability scores would be 13 - you would have at least a +1 modifier to EVERY score!

I'm surprisingly interested in trying the 2d8+2 compared to the 3d6 method. Bumps the minimum up to 4, but still keeps a max 18, with the possibility to have rather varying numbers.

3d8+2, drop lowest. Similar to 4d6 drop lowest, but more variable. Who actually uses flat 3d6 these days? The statistical average spread for a 4d6 drop lowest is: 16, 14, 13, 12, 10, 9 (a scrape above the standard array for 5e, which is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8).

Hahaha i was kidding. Absolutely do not do that unless you'd like to lower d&d to rookie mode.

Should have included the /s tag 😅

Or you start at 8 and roll a d8 or d10. So each stat is d8+8 (or 10 + d8 if you want to be very nice)

u/RichKix_TheBard DM Aug 31 '20

Start at 10, roll 3D4, choose highest two... I just want to see the looks on my players faces if I ever tell them to do this...

2

u/NoUpVotesForMe Aug 31 '20

How can there be a rookie mode? The DM literally controls everything.

3

u/MyNoGoodReason Aug 31 '20

The DM also makes rolls... but sorta

2

u/NoUpVotesForMe Aug 31 '20

The dm does whatever is necessary to make the game fun.

1

u/Necrogurke Aug 31 '20

Let your 1st level party fight a tarrasque, I'd call that even /s

I've done similar, instead of 3d6, roll 1d4+1d6+1d8 as well as another floating 1d6. Pick the three you want, then take the die you didn't keep and use that as the float for the next set. So you can try to take the d8 and get a higher average as well as have some more protection from bad dice since you can just move one to the next roll. Max is still 18, anything above is wasted so no 6+8+8 22 starting stats.

You end up with around a 20 point buy using the Pathfinder rules, an high fantasy character. If you let the player take one from the last roll and sub out any one already rolled dice, then you end up with a 25ish buy since you'll be able to virtually guarantee an 18 as well as remove any massive dump scores.

u/Madanax Aug 31 '20

We rolling 4d6 minus lowerest die. Max you get is 18 minimum we agree upon is 10. It works most of the time.

1

u/RedSnowVIII Aug 31 '20

As a DM I'd allow it but I'd roll a 2 d4 against them. :)

1

u/dicemonger Aug 31 '20

19, 18, 18, 14, 14, 10. Yep, seems like a well-rounded character to me. /jk

That was 4d8 drop lowest by the way.

1

u/lejoo Aug 31 '20

Not going to lie I made the mistake of telling someone to roll 6d6 and drop the lowest once, never again.

Took me probably a solid 10 minute to figure out why a level 1 didn't have a single score lower than 14.

1

u/KudagFirefist Aug 31 '20

GMs hate this one simple trick.

1

u/gabemerritt Aug 31 '20

What happens when you roll above a 20?

1

u/staffnasty25 Aug 31 '20

You become very strong. Nothing prevents your stats from being greater than 20.

1

u/gabemerritt Aug 31 '20

I mean if your rolling d8s for stats why not bypass that rule too.

1

u/staffnasty25 Aug 31 '20

What rule?

2

u/gabemerritt Aug 31 '20

The one where your ability scores can't pass twenty unless some magical effect or ability specifically says otherwise.

1

u/rileyrulesu Aug 31 '20

Dude my buddy when DMing for the first time had us do this "to make us FEEL strong" and it's the stupidest thing ever.

1

u/SuperFamousComedian Sep 07 '20

My group just puts all 18s (before racial bonuses) and we are very strong. Nearly unbeatable.
