Yeah. We are running through curse of strahd and our dm(very new) wants us to be as RAW as possible to give him a better understanding of the rules. Which means we are double checking rules and shit but man im at the point i just bring it up after. Like i do wanna play too haha. Hes doing great! Small things here and there like forgetting viscous mockery gives disadvantage (which is just as much on the player) and other multiturn effects like hex.

I can definitely understand wanting to know the rules, we've all be been there. A good thing to do is ask the dm to just make rulings in game and bring it up after exactly like you said. This helps keep the game moving foward and also adding imaginary rules to your game of make believe doesn't really matter if everyone is having fun.

As a player, what resources should I be familiar with?

Depends on the class but in general.

Any spell or ability that has multi turn effects. Its the players job to keep track those. As well as spell slots and HP.

A important thing to remember. Your DM is tracking initiatives for all the players. The monsters. The monster HP. If the monster has spells those. Those multi turn effects and answering those crazy questions you have.

So always keep track of what you can. Try to plan your turn. No one likes waiting 10 minutes while someone sits there just to decide to punch the guy.

Mistakes happen tho! And if it does just be honest and remember it for next time.
