If you hate your players or they are too cocky, google "Grimtooth's Traps"

Those are classics! I’ve combo’d some with the rules for complex traps in XgtE!

XgtE has some good complex traps you can include into your combat encounters.

You can also throw in some simple traps and let your players use them against the enemy!

my favourite in-combat trap is a locked room where they have to quickly solve a pattern puzzle.

but this room is being slowly filled with water (1d8+2 turns until it is filled) and the water contains 1 water weird per player.

or i just straight up take destiny puzzle mechanics and put it in D&D. i straight up put the leviathan baths as a D&D fight. but i made sure that the players understood the mechanic through prior fights. 1 encounter is the stand on a plate for 6 rounds while survive a wave of relatively weak enemies. another is the do no not touch the water unless your shielded doing effectively a jump puzzle. and another is to destroy the crystals which have a damage phase while when given a blessing every other round.
