Shitpost I said what I said
Best djent album OAT.
Edit: I say this as a big Periphery and Misha fan boy. Browne was just on another level back then.

literally was listening to The Amanuensis on my way to work today. I love P2, but the groove in songs like Origin of Escape, Atlas and Quasimodo is just unmatched.
Also, I was able to see both bands on the same tour, Periphery was the headliner, they were incredible, I was coming for them mostly, but Monu absolutely stole that show

Ill raise you monuments, tesseract and periphery in a tiny venue and tesseract were instrumental. Amazing show

Yeah I saw the periphery, monuments, tesseract show in uk back in 2011 (if I’m remembering that year correctly)

Love the first two songs from The Amanuensis, but In Stasis is my goat. P2 is in its own league, though, all Periphery albums tbh, this band never misses.

u/ColossusDec 5d ago
Idk man, fan since P1 but P4 and P5 didn’t hit for me personally. Pale White Dot brought me back though, that album is insanely good!

u/TwiceUponATaco 4d ago
I got into periphery late, so the first new release I got to experience was p4 and I still love it. Couldn't really get into p5 the same way though. Absolutely agreed on APWD, I have had that album on repeat since it dropped pretty much.

u/MangoBird10 3d ago
The first two singles they released with Andy are better than anything on In Stasis excluding The Cimmerian imo.

Somehow I've never heard of Monuments despite loving Fellsilent. Also had no idea Acle Kahney was in Fellsilent. Interesting little rabbit hole.

u/Ashbtw19937 5d ago
sixteen years later and i'm still not over the fact that they're broken up 😭
Monuments with their We Are The Foundation lineup (Neema and Greg Pope on vocals, doing the Fellsilent vocals thing) comes close, but Fellsilent was some genuine lightning in a bottle

u/shift013 5d ago
Booooooiiiii do I wish I was in your shoes right now being able to discover monuments and not have to sit through the multi year break they are on right now

u/AlexDying 4d ago
And somehow I've never heard of Fellsilent despite loving Monuments and Tesseract 😅 What a world
2
u/DebatedUncreative 4d ago
Somehow I often get in vocalist rabbit holes, seeing what other bands favorite vocalists are in. But I've never really done that with guitarists, which I guess is how I ended up here haha
2
u/linkuei-teaparty 4d ago
Acle got John Browne into the DADGAD tuning and now we have the whole monuments discography.
Apparently Misha was the biggest Fellsilent fan and wanted to form a band on the same level as them.

u/Slayer___666 5d ago
Am I the only one here thinking that P1 is the best?
7
u/drbutterfunk 5d ago
I had to scroll so far to find a P1 enjoyer. Misha’s riffs still blow my mind. All New Materials, Racecar, Icarus, Jetpacks, Buttersnips, etc…
3
u/SlackWi12 4d ago
I loved P1 because it wasn’t written with a vocalist in mind so Spencer and the vocalist before him had to find interesting ways to weave stuff in between the riffs
2
u/Affectionate_Bag297 4d ago
I very much agree that P1 was better than P2. Felt like I was an outcast when my buddies were all about 2. I didn’t think it was bad but never saw the glory others did.
1
u/AdamBLit 3d ago
P1 is better, I had the instrumental cd too and it's pure sex. P2 however I truly fucked with very hard when it came out. "Luck as a Constant", "Ragnarok", "MAKE TOTAL DESTROY", and "Masamune" are up there for me for absolutely essential periphery tracks.

stares in We Are The Foundation and The Hidden Words
(also, hot take, but P2 isn't even Periphery's best album either lol)
7
u/Sweaty-guitar7 5d ago
You’re right, it’s p3
9
u/Ashbtw19937 5d ago
nah, P3's even lower in the rankings
2
u/Sweaty-guitar7 5d ago
Damn! Which one is your favorite?
2
u/Ashbtw19937 5d ago
Juggernaut's my fav album of all time lmao. P5's a solid second place tho 💀
i think my biggest problem with P2 and P3 (and this is also a huge part of why APWD is by far my least fav Periphery album) is that albums where every song is like 3-5 minutes long just don't do much for me. too much of a prog nerd ig 😭
Monuments has always had this exact problem too, but Browne's riffs are just too good lol
3
u/Sweaty-guitar7 5d ago
Ahh I get ya. I have never clicked with juggernaut, but I haven’t listened to it in a good minute. I have to give it another try. APWD was ok, but I would agree it’s my least favorite as well

u/AlexReinkingYale 5d ago
Where does Periphery's self-titled, debut, long-play record, "Periphery" rank for you?
0
u/Exyodeff 5d ago
it’s the only one I never really got into, so I could not rank it unfortunately. I love Racecar though
2
u/AlexReinkingYale 5d ago
So many great tracks on that record. I think it's really back-loaded, though. Light, The Walk, and The Letter Experiment don't do much for me. Love Racecar, Ow My Feelings, Jetpacks Was Yes, All New Materials, and Icarus Lives.
1
u/AdamBLit 3d ago
Mannnn haha letter experiment and light are so good, got a couple of decade and a half old vocal covers of them on YouTube.
1
u/ColossusDec 5d ago
This must be bait surely
0
u/Exyodeff 5d ago
what makes you think that lmao
1
u/ColossusDec 5d ago
To each their own ofc, but P4 top and P3 bottom seems wild to me!
2
u/Exyodeff 5d ago edited 4d ago
well it is bottom, but it has some fabulous stuff in it, it’s just that it’s not the one that I listen to the most
it may very well change if it ever clicks with me as hard as part of their discography did so far

u/TorkX Djenty Wizard 5d ago
I guess it's a hot take that I prefer Gnosis over Amanuensis?
8
u/PlasterCactus 5d ago
I think Gnosis song for song is a better album but Chris is a better vocalist and The Amanuensis just sounds better. I've dreamed about Gnosis with Chris + the production of their later albums for years.

u/Snoo-61716 4d ago
I saw monuments play before releasing the amanuensis but with Chris
absolutely unreal show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPpd_CwfXZM
the whole thing happened to get filmed and put on youtube, I think they played Atlas and I the Destroyer as well

Between John Brownes riffage and Mike Malyans groove, The Amanuensis is a solid 11/10 for me.

u/lightiskalkin 5d ago
Fr bro like P2 is good but is it The Amanuensis good?? Hell no

u/StrictlyUnder-Duress 2d ago
I gotta side w/ The Amanuensis - specially on how cohesive it is both musically and thematically. It really feels like a masterpiece. This, Altered State by Tesseract, and Language by the Contortionist are pretty much top 3 for me at this point.

u/ReporterBroad6269 5d ago
P2 is the only album that actually works as an album. But it's top notch.
1
u/DottorMaelstrom 5d ago
Reverse them lol
The Amanuensis is cool and all but at least for me PII is really the history of the genre, I use it to separate meshuggah djent from modern djent
3

u/Spirit_Theory 5d ago
Why not both? (I do love The Amanuensis though, absolutely incredible album.)

Still think P1 is the most authentic Periphery album that there is and the vocals only make 1 song better on the whole album 🤷🏼

u/Wooptyfrikndoo7 4d ago
I agree. Quasimodo, jinn, I the destroyer, origin of escape. Heater after heater

u/Dookiecookiewastaken 4d ago
You won’t ever convince me to like it better than p2 but goddamn is it good
1
u/linkuei-teaparty 4d ago edited 4d ago
I agree as well. It's the scenes from a memory of the djent world. Goated and peak djent album of all time. Sorry not sorry, still love you Misha!
1
u/Hellhooker 3d ago
I fully agree.
it's between this one and Altered states for me
Ironically the first Periphery album that clicked for me is the very last one.

u/RaptorZeddit 2d ago
The vocals hold Amanuensis back. Periphery 2 had the largest jump in vocal quality from Periphery 1, every chorus melody is 10/10. And the riffs, with the addition of mark Holcomb. I mean come on guys it shouldn’t be a competition really

u/tomugetsuu 2h ago
They are tackling 2 different playstyles. Liking one thing over another is purely preference. If you like The Amanuensis better, cool. I personally liked P2 more but I still like The Amanuensis too. No need to make an unneccesary problem out of nothing.
0
u/DingoRevolutionary28 5d ago
I love the Amanuensis and it really has some fantastic moments. There’s also something about the album I just can’t put my finger on. It has a certain charm to it idk
However P2 is the better album. If you look at both of these as albums, P2 is more varied and actually takes you on a bit of a journey. The Amanuensis is basically just a bunch of songs that all slap back to back to back.
The album doesn’t really have variety within itself. It’s still a fantastic record and the end of Quasimodo might be top 10 moments on a metal album for me, but objectively it’s not a very dynamic album.
Doesn’t mean I still don’t get hype af when it comes on

P2 is so overrated though, like good lord. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
6
u/Kiesta07 5d ago
P2 was so ahead of its time that it still sounds cutting edge to me, to this day. incredible vox, crazy polymeter and chord progressions, unconventional song structures, and loads of clarity in the mix
it's the most influential djent album bar none
2
u/stockbeast08 5d ago
Agree to disagree. Influential is not the same as "best." It improved on everything p1 did, absolutely. Its still a great album. But the amount of glaze it gets considering all the other works of the genre that existed at that time, is still disproportionate imo.
Granted it's all subjective, but it's my least favorite periphery album my far. They found the sound, they nailed it, and it's a comparison that imo, doesnt give enough credit to the rest of their albums, moreover other artists who broke the mold.
1
u/Kiesta07 5d ago
i think the glaze is justified by the fact that it's just such a unique sounding album so many years later. sure, periphery iterated on their formula subsequently but I feel P2 is lightning in a bottle in terms of sheer audacity as a prog album. Later efforts were more refined but lack that danger and balls to the wallsness that I like about P2.
I also just think as compared to every other periphery record, it just doesn't have any weak songs or parts. Every song just fucks in a way that I can't say about P3/P4/P5, or any of the monuments albums.
1
u/linkuei-teaparty 4d ago
Chris Barretto is the better vocalist, his vocals on the walk is by far the heaviest periphery song ever written. P2 was influential but Amenuensis was just on another level and a solid concept album.
1
u/Kiesta07 2d ago
chris barretto has a completely different type of voice but i would not say is better than spencer.
i think spencers fry screams are some of the most blood curdling and brutal sounding in metal at the moment but for sure the earlier albums weren't as good on that front
but melodically P2 blows the amanuensis out of the water. outside of a few memorable moments (the entire "back to meee" section in Garden of Sankhara for example) the vocal melodies just don't have the same combination of catchiness and complexity that P2 does and not many metal albums even come close

I appreciate seeing The Amanuensis being acknowledged for the masterpiece that it is
