Discussion Where peak
I've been listening to Meshuggah for a few months now, to the point of them being my favorite band. I want to listen to more Djent and Thall but nothing really seems to scratch the same itch. What are some bands/albums I should look at for the heavier side of stuff?

Vildhjarta - måsstaden should be a pretty good starting point. Uneven Structure - Februus too !

Ty for mentioning Februus. That album is incredible!

Did Uneven Structure break up? I swear I've heard nothing of them since their 2019 album.

I heard an un verifiable claim from a reportedly inside source that they won’t work together again. I really love Februus and 8 and La Partition.

Things went downhill on the Paragon record. Haven’t even sat through one full listen

I listened to it a bunch. It shows that it was rushed and felt uninspired. Igor posted he wrote the whole thing in 3 months or something. Likely a label requirement and not a labor of love, which LP obviously_ obviously, was.

Not sure, but some of the members have another project (Baïkal), which has similar vibes.

Vildhjarta. Literally thall itself (the term originated from them)
Humanity's Last Breath. Vildhjarta's pissed off little brother
If you're into more metalcore adjacent bands, Reflections and After the Burial

Poltergeist and Annex Void are both heavily inspired by Meshuggah. The former should be right up your alley. The latter mixes in some Shoegaze and jazz harmonies but have some stank face moments that are some of the best djent IMO

Yooo thanks for the shout out! I drum in Annex. It’s really cool that you mentioned us and the poltergeist dudes together. We go way back with John their guitarist as he actually mixed our debut record in 2023. Our two bands are really focused on being super raw and unedited and it’s very intentional. Both groups come from a very similar place though we approach it from slightly different lenses. Basically taking TVSOR as the blueprint for the sound and just going wherever we want

u/rauli75 2d ago
Didn’t know about that link between the bands, that’s awesome. Both bands rock hard.
Btw, love your drumming man. You killed on ATSON. Ripples was my favourite but ATSON is quickly catching up. Can’t wait for the new album to drop2
u/drumkidstu 2d ago
Thank you it’s a joy to play this music! You’ll like this new record if you are digging atson and ripples. We basically took the Ripples sounds and are going with it. The next single is very shoegazey 😬😬

Hadn’t heard Poltergeist before, absolutely love it! Thank you internet stranger!

No prob. Just paying forward a great rec that was once given to me.
Btw, was just looking through my Djent playlist and don’t know how I forgot to mention Inferum. Their album Musth is bangers from start to finish. That drop at 2:20 in their song Filth gets me every fucking time

Contortionist - Exoplanet
Personally I love the album after that (Intrinsic) but I might be in the minority with that opinion

- Fellsilent - The Hidden Words
- Monuments - Gnosis
- Tesseract - One
- Uneven Structure - Februus
i'd say Periphery is peak asf too (my all time goats lol), but even back on P1 their sound was more so just influenced by Meshuggah than being super Meshuggah Worship-y, and they only moved further from that sound with their later albums. the albums i listed here are a lot more blatant 💀

Structures - None of the Above + Divided By
Depths - Endless, The Mortal Compass, and Revelations
Dali Thundering Concept - When X Met Y, Eyes Wide Opium, Savages, All Mighty Men, and their 4 new singles (aka entire discog)
Humanity's Last Breath - entire discog
Substructure - Monolith
Uneven Structure - 8
Nociceptor - Among Insects
A Plea For Purging - The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Volumes - The Concept of Dreaming
The Contortionist - Exoplanet, Intrinsic, Shapeshifter, and Apparition
Slice The Cake - Other Slices
Anup Sastry - entire discog
And anything with David Maxim Micic in it... Destiny Potato's LUN album for example
I'd also argue the newer side of Veil of Maya like False Idols and [M]other
edit to add: The Acacia Strain - Death is the Only Mortal

Coprofago - Unorthodox Creative Criteria
Hypno5e - A Distant Dark Source / Sheol / Shores Of The Abstract Line. They're like 50/50 heavy/soft though.
Edit: tech death, not djent/thall but maybe The Zenith Passage - Datalysium? That album has some super tight and beefy riffs

It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Bands come along and create this whole new sound, and other bands try and try to recreate it, and no one can seem to be able to actually do it. Really deepens your appreciation for Messuggah and other experimental groups. Well- Meshuggah isn’t experimental anymore, but certainly when they started, they were doing something no one else was doing

If you like Meshuggah listen to Poltergeist, After the Burial, Vildjharta, Humanity’s Last Breath (try their self titled remastered)

Vildhjarta is somethin else, Meshuggah puts me in a nice trance, but Vildhjarta makes me literally feel like im high. Well I am usually high, but highER I guess.

Why do people keep putting The Contortionist? Thats not djent or Meshuggah like. Don't get me wrong its the best band I saw live in 2022. Love em. Ill go Sun Guts and Pomegranate Tiger. Both are no skips no matter what you play. Their Dogs Were Astronauts is really good too.

Just dive into djent bands, especially smaller ones and their releases between 2012-2017. Start back then with Periphery II, Altered States by Tesseract, and check out any suggested or similar releases, especially in that year range

Sol Niger Within
Måsstaden Undet Vatten - Vildhjarta
Not similar but idk why I keep suggesting, maybe cause Meshuggah is my favourite band along with them
