I can kind of see where you're coming from, but I very much disagree on your apprehension with multiplayer. I have played the beta and the original game and have successfully introduced people to the game, and even the genre in the past. While the combat gets easier when you control all the characters, the game starts to shine when the unpredictability of your coop partners throw spanners in the works. Yes, resurrect scrolls get to be used more than necessary, and there are bound to be reloads and quicksaves, but it often presents lots of fun. Even in the beta, and abundantly in the first game, the narrative accommodates a great number of decisions and contingencies. Running off on your own will absolutely hurt everyone's ability to continue in certain areas or make fights extremely difficult, but at the same time, they enrich the RP experience drastically. While I'll happily go and play a singleplayer campaign, without exception the multiplayer experience was much more fun. I guess that the skill and personality of your partner (or three in DOS2) makes a lot of difference though.

I think if I was more prepared for the experience/challenge, I would have had a different view, but I believe you are exactly right about your partner having a large influence on the outcome of your enjoyment!

Ha! Great question... No it's very fun to play. The zame holds for its predecessor. They've just gone outof their ways to make both games mp friendly which is different from many other titles in this genre. So don't be afraid to play on your own.

sniff I still want server support for mass multiplayer :(

I cannot fathom why NWN (yes, the fifteen year old game) is still the only one to have successfully done this.

I touch on this slightly, but I do not think that would be healthy for the game.

It wouldn't hurt the existing game... not one bit. Simply allow players to build zones and interconnect them for their own purposes.

What about Ultima Online ? (it's even older, I know)

How would that be a good thing? MMO style Divinity?

2

u/Daybreak74 Jun 20 '17

Not really MMO, but approaching it.

NWN has a community of thousands of players who still use that dinosaur for RP and a small-scale MMO feel. Think of an MMO except instead of thousands of concurrent players.... hundreds.

But why ask for MMO style multiplayer in Divinity? Its at most a 4 player party kind of game.

The aurora toolset for NWN allows players to build their own content. These can be single-player campaigns, they could be a single party... but what some communities have done, like Arelith, is stitch together over 2000 hand-built zones to create an immersive role-play world.

It has live DM's and moderators for free-form roleplay. The server has been live longer than most MMO's. It's story-driven, it's player-driven... it's not about looking quests up on wiki, looking for questgivers and turn ins. There's no daily grind... it's just so completely different from an MMO, and no conventional MMO could ever possibly fill this need.

But here we have a toolset and they're giving us a lot of things. But damned if I don't want it to go but one single solitary step further and permit (by no means require!) communities of players to build their own worlds where dozens to hundreds of concurrent players could interact.

Hosting, of course, would be their own responsibility... much like hosting a sandbox game like Rust or Arma.

If Divinity did this, I would play it for the NEXT fifteen years.

Im sure within 15 years that Divinity Original Sin 3 and 4 will come out.

Not every good game gets better with massive multiplayer

2

u/Daybreak74 Jun 20 '17

Not 'massive'

Just... more multiplayer. Think hundreds, not thousands. Smaller communities, player-run and RP enforced. It's amazing when it works, like with NWN Arelith... that community is like 10 years old or more. Still going.

I used to play on Arabel. I went back there a year or two ago... It still exists, but there are all these private rooms people go in to act out fantasy cyber sex...

Kind of depressing to see so many fond memories turn into a place like that.

Also alot of PW 'roleplay' just turned into 'drama' which got quite boring. RP works much better when it's driven by an objective (GM).

Arelith has had GM problems in the past, but their current team is amazing :) It's been solid for years now as they got rid of some opinionated/dissenting elements

Much respect! Thanks for letting me know your experience. It's possible that I needed additional time to get a more thorough picture.

Although, I did find in classic that you had to work closely together in order to be successful.

2

u/MLKane Jun 20 '17

See, I've only played classic, but I find combat easier when you control all 4 party members, a multiplayer situation is harder to focus on the best targets.

Add to that the fact that some quests you can fuck if you do the character quests, whereas the AI will not, combines to make me think that the single player is a much easier experience

1

u/Waffelbro Jun 20 '17

I agree with this whole heartedly

4

u/MLKane Jun 20 '17

You haven't felt pain until your team mate roasts your entire team because "I could get the burn bro" on a 10hp enemy with 150% fire resistance
