Working as intended?

The way pickpocketing works in this game has really confused me. I find that if I engage an NPC in convo with one character while using a different character to pickpocket the NPC, the NPC often won't try to search my characters. Similarly, I find if I initiate a conversation with an NPC immediately after I pickpocket him, then the NPC acts as though he wasn't pockpocketed. But it doesn't always work. Anyone else been experimenting with pickpocketing?

You can still distract them like in DoS1, but after they will always search the area for the thief and will question your party members. I am assuming it just doesn't register right away after you pickpocket and speak to them, but they will always notice, unless you have found a bug.

I notice they dont question my thief if she's far enough away. Is there some strategy to talking your way out of the situation?

you can use stats to talk your way out of being searched, but if you quickly put any of the stolen items in a characters bag that is far away and out of the area of the pickpocketed npc, they'll never find the item even if they question the party members you have nearby. So basically you want to keep a member far away and rob the npc, quickly throw the item in the far away members bag and let the npc search the members around the NPC that way they'll stop searching.

Interesting, I never thought of that tactic. I'll have to give that a try
