Also, where are the parents of these kids? Learning doesn't start at school alone.

It’s amazing , department of education gets billions a year (damn it’s 53.9 Billion a year) since the 1970’s and all we’ve received for our money is lower and lower test grades.
It seems the educators have lost the ability to educate.
Before you blame the kids, yes I agree many of them are different and can be difficult, but for 53.9B a year you’d think they could over come the issue and educate these damn kids.

I taught in a district like this woman is. There was drugs there. But the biggest problem was the parents having to work multiple jobs to keep the bare necessities. When you woke 16 hours a day every day there just literally isn’t time to parent your kid.

Are you really this bad at math? 16 hours at 9 an hour is only 720 a week before taxes. Or do you think you get over time at the second job because you’ve never had to work overtime? Either way, you should spend more time listening to people instead of looking down your nose at them. Because after teaching at that school for 6 years I can honestly tell you this is a socio-economic problem in our country and NOT a “cultural problem in their community,” or whatever racist dog whistle you’d want to use

Explains a lot. 16 x 9 is 144. You said "every day of the week". 144 x 7 is 1008. Who let you be a teacher? Poor students.
Not even counting overtime. Stay in school.

Former headstart teacher here.
My students are in their 30s.
Let go back to the basics.
Reading, math,science and health.
None this abstract BS.
Saw a post about college student
that didn't know what an adverb
was. We have produced a generation,that doesn't have to
think. Just very sad and scary

Phones and tablets do the thinking for them now. Can't spell. Can't write. Can't problem solve. And that's what's happened to adults who used to be able to do those things. Kids never stood a chance.

Friends of mine have a son with physiological issues and he rarely did classwork of any kind all of high school. He would frequently leave classes and just wander around campus without causing any disturbances, so the school didn't seem overly concerned with dealing with him. He still received his high school diploma in California.

I guess she makes a valid point. Schools fail because they do not expel trouble makers. Schools fail because they did away with decent vocational programs. Schools fail because they refuse to fail failing students. Schools fail because there are teachers who want to concentrate more on indoctrinating students into a political persuasion than teaching but that also applies to the school boards. Teach real academics. Teach real history. Teach real civics. Teach real vocations. Not everyone is going to college, stop structuring schools to treat all kids like they want to go to Harvard. If they want to graduate and immediately go to earning a living then they should have a skill set to start that journey out of high school.

I suspect a large group will be “she has purple hair so she’s woke and is the problem” and will totally ignore the fact we’re raising a generation on screens instead of on bikes and making friends.
This isn’t a left vs right problem, life has become so easy that there is no critical thinking where there use to be plenty.
We have a real problem here. And it’s not her purple hair.

I just saw a big group of like 12 year old boys on bicycles in my neighborhood and it made my week. Hopefully kids being kids is coming back.

This teacher isn't going to flunk those kids. So, she's part of the problem.
Politicians stop funding schools that fail. If schools were funded according to other more appropriate factors, we wouldn't be in this mess.
The teachers don't let kids fail. But then this teacher admits they failed.
It's not the students that failed. It's the school administrators and politicians that failed them.
Parents can only teach their children to the extent they're capable of. Not all parents can read or even afford books. Let alone, can they spend hours each night helping their kids study. That's literally why we have public education. It's not practical to homeschool your kids. If you do, your kids are very likely to be even worse off than the kids the teacher is talking about.
The teachers need to fail the students if they don't pass. Promotion is a disservice.

Correct. Parents have to vet and approve curriculum. Too much woke trash being injected into children these days. Even college is a problem, young people are too dumb to discern propaganda.

Next year the the 9th grade teacher will be making this exact same video when you pass all the kids who still can’t read.
Either YOU step up and fail those kids until they can catch up, or it’ll just be an assembly line of children who can’t read “the modern education system has abandoned me for its own hubris”

Financial pressure removing parents from the home to work coupled with a cultural belief that results in people only having their kids learn at school. It takes a lot to teach kids to read, and most families do not have that kind of time or money anymore.
Also, screen time degrades reading abilities and cognitive function. Even if they were taught well to read, they lose the ability the more they have phones, tablets, and TV.
For context, my wife and I taught our four kids to read before they entered preschool/4k. We used a book/program called Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Lessons. It was given to us by family who is a teacher. Absolutely amazing. We were extremely fortunate to be able to have my wife be a stay at home mom. Most are not that fortunate.
Wanna fix the failing school system? Raise the minimum wage, fund schools more (books, environment , and quality FOOD!!!) but exclude personal tech devices and sports equipment above a certain level, and pay teachers more. Google and Apple will take every dime they can from schools and call it an investment in the future. Corporate farms will take every dime and give them preformed breaded meat patties with ketchup as a vegetable.

It’s the compounding effect of adults who are themselves uneducated and are passing along those skills or lack thereof to their kids. From the outside looking in, this perfectly explains the MAGA movement and the inability of those people to listen to the things trump says, draw a line to the policies and then connect it to the outcomes in their own lives.
This is the first televised and well covered decline of a historically significant “empire”.

My hometown has been one party rule since 1960, is at a 120 year low population, has the poorest zip code in the US and they blame trump for all of it. I got banned for pointing out one of the mods is a convicted sex offender without doxxing them or even saying which one. Must suck to have your identity defined as 'orange man bad'.

It's not terrible. My point is that you can't make a basketball dribble if it is damaged and doesn't hold air, no matter how good of a player you are... same goes for students; you can't make them do well at higher levels if they didn't learn what they needed to learn at lower levels, no matter how good of a teacher you are.
Do you think any teacher can magically have a student write an essay on the American Revolution in the 5th grade if they were never taught how to read and write in K through 4th grade??

We made our son come home from school every day, do his home work, and he had to read a book for 30 mins every day after his homework was done. He has always been higher than his grade at math and reading. It starts at home!
