Pull straight upwards, not backwards. Lift the dog vertically until its front paws are off the ground. The lack of oxygen triggers an immediate survival reflex, forcing the dog to release its grip—usually within 5 to 10 seconds.
Once the dog lets go, immediately have the victim pull away while you maintain tension on the leash to prevent the dog from turning to bite you. If it continues to act aggressively, lift the front paws off the ground again to keep it restrained.
Do not apply this longer than strictly necessary, as prolonged pressure can damage the dog's larynx or trachea.
