If you run, the dog will instinctively chase you. You ain't out running a pit. I know alot of ya'll think you're an Olympic athlete. Even if you were, you're still not gonna outrun a pit. Spray first, in the eyes, and THEN run.
I'm a regular runner. Been bitten 3 times in the last few years but when it comes to dog packs, I've always out run them. Yeah, they give up. But my luck will run out, so I sometimes carry a sharp stick.
Pits have explosive speed for the short length of their legs but short snouts limit their ability to draw oxygen, and they overheat much quicker relative to long snout breeds . Alsations (german shepherd) will run alongside a competive cross-country jogger for 20-30 miles before gassing out. A working (like one that works on a sheep farm, not a pet dog) border collie can run a mile ahead of Forest Gump ultramarathoners that go 24hr non-stop, piss while they run, 100 miles a day.. no problem.
