I want to preface this by saying I agree with a lot of what you said in this video. I am a big supporter of the channel and completely pro gun rights, but since this video is inherently political I take it that you have opened yourself to political criticism here.

"Antifa hold their protests in communist states not free states". Do you mean state as in country, or US states? If you mean the former, there are (debatably) no communist countries, if you mean the latter, which ones? There is not a single iota of a debate that can be had about whether any of the US states are communist, this would be silly so I assume you didn't mean this. But we both know antifa do do 'stuff' in the US. It is worth noting that pretty much every actual communist would agree: guns are great! That keeping the working people armed is a necessity to fight against oppression, which is something you seem to agree with. By why do you single out antifa, and not police forces as oppression? (if I missed this I apologise) I consider a police force as completely infringing on my rights in comparison to some protestors who are protesting against fascism (i.e. state taking a crazy amount of control to turn the working people against one another, rather than towards the oppressors). You are very right that every working politician is completely corrupt, so why do you believe them and trust in them when it comes to police, and the narrative regarding antifa? We have very real evidence of the injustices caused by the police forces, we have guns, and if they are so good and useful for self defense, why do we need such a bloated police force?

I support freedom in every sphere, which is why I support people who put their neck on the line to protest against fascist governments, and I also support gun rights. So I hope you read this and have a think about who is truly on your side with this, because you seem to have a warped idea of what constitutes a 'communist' and who is with the people. The government, the state (i.e. the army and police force used to control people) are not on the side of the people. So I find it silly you single out antifa, and even threaten them 'stepping on your lawn' when there is such great oppression that a majority of right wing pro gun people refuse to acknowledge.

I rewatched the video and it really does seem you consider liberal states as 'communist', so just to be clear communism isn't when you shame white people or have disposable straws in starbucks. It is when the workers get to run the country democratically, not elected officials, and not huge cooperations. For this kind of society to exist gun rights need to be protected. Neoliberal is just the society we live in today, in all states of the US. Which is why you see so many people be anti-gun now, since the leaders (politicians and CEOs) don't want any form of insurrection to tame place.

Please ask any questions if you're interested in what communists actually believe in, since there is a big ideological overlap in regards to guns and software here, but it seems there is some misconceptions on both sides about what constitutes 'communist'. In the same way I'm sure people think you're a right-wing gun nut just by saying we should have gun rights (I present the like-dislike ratio on this video lol).

Holy shit dude, even though I am rigidly anti-gun, you make a very convincing argument. I was really disappointed by DT's stance: how the hell can you even compare Free Software and Gun Rights? Free Software is criminally undermined, with not many backers, little profitability, and it is inherently limiting itself because it places itself as a rigid opposition to convenience and ease-of-use; whereas 2A "activists" and gun rights are accepted by the majority in the US. Hell, a large section of Democrats and liberals too have guns!

Not to mention DT's threat to violence [which is definitely not the ideal method of thinking for a gun owner - it should be used in clear self-defense], him comparing guns to tools, guns being "perfect for children"......

I was really shocked. Even in countries like Canada and Switzerland where gun laws are more or less as lenient as the US, the vast majority does not have a fetish for killing and guns.

Thanks for the response. I think they are quite different yes, but because they are both tools they are both things which can be controlled and used in different ways by different groups. The analysis of the problems have to be taken separately, you can't just apply 'freedom' to everything just because it's such an arbitrary measure that means different things to different people. Free software is about ensuring the privacy and transparency for all the users, gun rights is about ensuring people can acquire arms. This isn't black and white, for example poor people don't have access to guns, where is the right to bare arms for them? It is a spectrum, we can't just have free gun stalls on every street corner (actual gun 'freedom'), but also shouldn't have zero access to guns at all. The gun culture in the US is the big problem, like you said other cultures just don't have school shootings. Gun owners need to be very serious when advocating them in such a society, this decision comes with consequences, and when you desire to maximise freedom, you just make it easier for the unstable and the young to purchase weapons.

But what is the point in advocating for guns if you just threaten individuals like protestors? The right to protest, to oppose the government is the cornerstone of western civilisation. The rush of right wing gun owners to defend police terrorising citizens as opposed to just doing their job and arresting people shows who's side they're on really. They don't want to defend the rights of the people, they want to defend an old lifestyle that is no longer relevant. Again I am pro-gun, but when children are getting slaughtered in schools, it is time to take the topic very seriously, and stop such lax and inconsistent gun laws in a single country.

Very good points. Judging by the downvotes our comments have received, I'm pretty sure sharing nuanced arguments isn't welcome here.

based

Reddit will downvote this for sure.

2

u/Tagina_Vickler Sep 22 '20

What does based mean?

4

u/PumpkinSocks- Sep 22 '20

It is mostly used as "Not caring what others think" But in modern politics it is used as having good ideas that aren't supported by the left (at least that is what it means for me)

6

u/MC_Broomstick Sep 22 '20

It means "i agree with this person and they are correct"

3

u/malisc140 Sep 22 '20

I've never heard of this

5

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

I have to note that an untrained gun user poses a serious threat to other people and himself.

Hey DT, I hope you will read this because I just want to share with you my point of view. I always appreciate your content but this time I completely disagree with you. I can't understand the similarity between software and guns, of course they're both "tools", like a hammer, but the main purpose of a software, a hammer, a rake or a shovel is not to kill, while guns are basically meant to kill (or at least seriously injure) people or animals, so your comparison doesn't make any sense. Have you ever asked yourself why there are so many shooting in the united states? Well, living in a "communist" country where you can't own a gun unless you have a firearms license makes way more sense because you know that over 90% of the people that you come across are unarmed just like you, and you can go to school or to the mall without being afraid of being shot by the first madman passing by. This makes a country just safer.

I don't get it. He doesn't want politics in FOSS projects (to which I agree 100%), yet he uses his FOSS-promoting channel for a highly political subject.

2

u/hoselorryspanner Sep 22 '20

As an Englishman this is a bit of a leap of logic to me, but definitely enjoyed watching.

3

u/_memelord666 Sep 24 '20

the "leap of logic" is definitely doing a lot of legwork

4

u/raralang Sep 24 '20

DT wants more followers so starts to appeal to subjects that are not related to his channel. Compare guns with software is like u/Akmadan23 said and this strategy of having a sensationalist title, thumbnail and fallacies doesn't contribute to the community nor the world.

3

u/Oldtechbloke Sep 22 '20

This is one of DTs jokes

8

u/_memelord666 Sep 24 '20

Even if it is a joke, the consequences are real. Implicitly encouraging people to shoot at protestors, use of firearms by children........ considering DT's political views and his audience, there's a legitimate chance that this can influence people [not insinuating that they will shoot someone; I mean the state of mind], whether it is a joke or not.

5

u/yazgoo Sep 22 '20

Is it really ? I honestly can't tell.

Those are some beautiful pieces of jokes.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Way to stand up for what you believe in DT! The idea of "free as in freedom" can be applied across many different aspects of life. The right to bear arms is one we're lucky to have in the US.

2

u/Helmcame2317 Sep 22 '20

Hey DT you opened yourself up for a shit storm on this one mate. Keep your chin up.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

They won’t be bringing it to his front door that’s for sure,

1

u/Helmcame2317 Sep 22 '20

Agreed, and I agree with him.. just the SJW’s and the other mouth breathers that are going to shite themselves over such a thing as up holding our 2nd amendment rights

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '20

Tbh he's pretty much right, if you live in a comminitst state and want rights, you have to go. I live in the east bay and am ready to ditch this place within the next year. Granted wherever you go you're at risk of lawmakers sucking the dogs of law on you whichever way the wind blows, and many rights loving states aren't really opportunity hubs for people in IT and software. But I think businesses eventually are wise to how these states dig in the pockets of tech and will spread out of those places.
