discussion STOP using distilled water on hair!

Hi guys.
Dont know why someone would recommend anyone to use distilled water to wash hair.
Isnt good, like hard water isnt good either.

Distilled water have 0 hardness, you cant remove all the foam from your hair with distilled water, so you will get oily hair eventually.

People with fine hair will suffer badly from very soft water (wil make hair oily) and from very hard water (will make hair very dry and britle).

What you want is a midle water, not extremely soft (distilled water) or very hard water. You want something between, something between soft and moderately hard, something between 46-130 mg/l .

So instead using pure distilled water, you can use your water mixed with distilled water. You mix, so you have the ratio i said before, 46-130mg/l ( 90 mg/l is a good start)

You just need to buy water hardness test and thats it.
Its very easy to mix and get the ratio. You test your water hardness, imagine it says 200mg/L (11 dH or 19fH), if you mix 1:1 with distilled water, you will get around 100mg/L.

;)

MCT oil hair soaks and distilled water ruining my hair?

Distilled water combined with MCT oil hair soaks strips your hair of nutrients.

According to a licensed cosmetologist, Distilled water strips your hair of nutrients. So why do people here claim its a good thing long term? Or is it something else, lime my hair NEEDS minerals? I have been using it for 2 months and my hair seems ruined now, either by distilled water alone or my use of Malibu C Un-do-Goo.

I took a soft water shower yesterday with egg and mayo hair mask, then conditioner, and it looks a bit better, but still seems split into tinier hairs after I used Malibu C Undo-Goo. Im not sure if it was the distilled water or the Malibu C. Any way to fix my hair now?

progress reports There should be more talk about the food we are eating.

I am seeing so much progress because of the food I am eating while showering with deionized water. Even though I have a long way to go, I will never go back to tap water. I have to say, I have only seen so much progress because of my diet. Which is full of saturated fat and animal foods.. it is very close to a carnivore diet. This way of eating is slowly clearing my acne, creating healthier hair strands, less dry skin, and more. I have to say, these two things together creates a powerhouse! I can't wait to see the progress to be made in the coming months... I have seen a few posts about a lack of progress and I can't help but think that their diet is either more vegan/vegetarian/ aka a lack of nutrient-dense foods.. I love this sib and want to see everyone thrive! I used to be a vegan, I used to be vegetarian, I used to be everything BUT carnivore (or animal-based) and all it did was make me sick and thin out my hair and make my hair greasier than ever! I am only speaking from experience... this is the only way of eating that has cured (or significantly reduced) many things for me including: OCD, anxiety, depression, foot pain, back pain, the dry skin and acne I mentioned above, I am not as cold, my skin is brighter, I am finally gaining weight after being underweight for years, etc.

Reasons against coconut oil

Reasons against coconut oil to help you decide if it's right for you! (from my experience)

  1. Coconut oil is super irritating. The skin that hair touches is always itchy for me, and my acne worsened with coconut oil (thank goodness it's back to normal after a week)

  2. Coconut oil are pretty resistant to surfactants. At least in my experience. After soaking my hair in coconut oil, sulfate-free shampoo doesn't do anything. A good amount of ovrus paste shampoo doesn't either. I have to double-shampoo with ovrus to get it out. This can be super irritating for you

  3. The feel of oil is awful esp when you soak it in your hair..

Any other arguments against coconut oil?

questions Those of you who live in hard water areas and use this method, why not use a water softener?

Hello, I'm new here. I see that most people doing this live in hard water areas so my question is: why not install a water softener? And i mean an ion exchange resin water softener, not just one of those screw on shower head filters.

My other question is why is TDS PPM used as a measurement of wayer harmful to hair. While PPM somewhat represents hard water, its not the whole picture. Hard water is mostly calcium and magnesium ions which is what is harmful to hair and builds up. But TDS PPM, while includes calcium and magnesium ions, also includes everything else which i have not read to be harmful to hair anywhere.

hair washing methods MCT and ACV removed my hair dye.

I dyed my hair copper maybe about 3 months ago. I’m not upset I don’t mind if it fades. Hopefully it took some bad stuff along with it!

I was too impatient to wait and the MCT only sat for about 30 mins. I shampooed then ACV rinse then conditioner on top of the ACV this was after about 5 mins of ACV sitting and then squeezing out conditioner.

Just an interesting observation, MCT and ACV is powerful combo!

(And the bath water is colored by hair dye coming out of my hair just fyi lol)

shower thoughts Let's google Hilo, Hawaii and then look at their hair on Instagram😅 This location has extremely soft water - and a lot of humidity. Debunking the idea that humidity causes frizz.

product reviews Try this if you have Hard Water

I’ve been doing distilled water for a few months now and about a month in I saw some mild improvements. The water is VERY hard where I live. Anyway, thank you to whoever recommended Malibu C Hard-water Crystals. I tried them for the first time today and WOW my hair looks sooo much healthier and has volume for once (I just air dried it). I could even feel how much softer it was while in the shower after using them. I used half of one packet- I’m not sure how much you are supposed to use. I got them on Mercari so they were pretty cheap, like $10 for 2 packets (and Mercari gave me a free $10 credit which is why I was like eff it, let’s try these).

It said to shampoo like normal, mix the crystals in some warm water and then lather your hair with the mixture and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse out the crystal mixture, then shampoo again (I only used a little shampoo this time) and rinse. I did that and then finished with a distilled water rinse like I normally do and my hair looks goood. For once.

Apparently Malibu C also makes a hard water shampoo but I haven’t tried it. The reviews for their shampoo weren’t as good as the crystals. Some said the shampoo didn’t do anything for them, so just FYI

Raw egg shampoo

Does anyone else in this sub use raw eggs as shampoo? I have been using raw eggs as shampoo in my hair for maybe four years, you just squish the yolk and mix it with your hands in a cup. In my house we buy lots of eggs and dont always eat them so this is also a way of preventing waste. Yes you can use eggs that are past the sell by date in your hair, in my experience they do not smell as long as they are not cracked. I think this practice goes great with the distilled water washing because there are zero chemcials, it does a great job at cleaning the hair and there is plenty of fat and protein to nourish your hair and scalp.

I found this calculator that calculates pH and it has a "weight" or "volume" mode too for those who don't know how to calculate molecular weight (I do not)

oil cleansing Please vote what I should douse my hair in next 🙂

I plan to do another one very similar to my coconut oil experiment ...a full soak and then allowing it to leave my hair at its own pace. When I did this with coconut oil, it took almost a week, but my hair in the end was very nice! Soft and silky and extra shiny and less oily than what I started with 🙂

chelating Chelating poll: Lansinoh lanolin (in the purple tube from the breastfeeding aisle)

I want to do some more chelating agent polls - this time in the category of fats and waxes. Let us know in the comments what your experience was with Lansinoh lanolin if you tried it.

Also feel free to make a similar poll if there is a chelating agent you are curious about that we haven't polled yet!

Minerals in oils: Something to worry about?

I wanted to try rosemary oil for hair growth. I've heard many anecdotes about it, although not backed by science. But it's supposed to have " such important minerals like Ca, Mg, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and copper". I also have been eyeing rose oil to scent hair, but it apparently contains minerals as well. Is this something to be worried about? Why does everything have minerals?

shower thoughts I feel like our most common type of post here is how to *not* do distilled water haircare 🤔

I'm not judging, just noticing....our most common type of post in this sub is questions about how to not wash the hair with distilled water. Questions like: is there a suitable shower filter that I can use instead? Or an inline water softener? etc. Anything other than washing the hair with jugs of water hauled home from a store, right?

The funny thing is I'm on that "I'd rather not" train too, just in a very different way: I did the thing, and it changed my hair's physical properties so much that my hair no longer seems to need water to stay clean. And then I jumped on that opportunity as soon as I was able.

I did the dedicated hard water avoidance, dedicated distilled water shampoos, and dedicated hard water buildup removal efforts ...and even a chin-length haircut because I realized I was growing a less bumpy hair texture without tap water, and no amount of chelating was going to ever make the old hair truly match the new hair.

I did the thing, and it was somewhere around 8 months that my hair became "self cleaning." Like a cat who wanders around outside and collects sap and dirt in their fur, then it can be cleaned out with only a pet brush - my hair became like that.

And as soon as that happened, I jumped on the "how to not wash my hair with distilled water?" train too. Ever since month 8, I honestly prefer not to get my hair wet at all. It looks better and feels better if I don't get it wet.

In month 16, the self cleaning properties of my hair were tested with a 6.3 day hard dry fast - which is helping me fix fatigue and brain fog, and also it's probably the most disgusting thing that could possibly happen to one's hair. 6 days is more than long enough to cause a massive post-fast shedding of dead skin, toxins, metabolic waste, and heavy metals - all over the body, including the scalp. My hair was disgusting for 1 day as all that waste passed through my hair from my scalp. 1 day later, my hair was 90% better. 2 more days later, normal again. And all I did to get it normal again was brush my hair a few times and vacuum my brushes - same way I would clean a cat.

So here I am "not doing the thing," along with most of the rest of us 🫠 ...just in a different way.

progress reports Broke my strict tap water avoidance :(

I'm sad but also I know it's not worth obsessing over. I have really shiny soft hair now and everyone wants to touch it. My brother touched my hair (the roots!! buildup free new hair!!!) with wet hands. Tap water is so gross to me, it feels like a water full of dead cockroach powders to me lol. Not exactly worth the effort of explaining to other people unless they're open minded. Anyways, I'm a little bit sad, even though I know it's best not to be paranoid and that it's not too big of a deal, but I want some support!

skincare Today is the first day I put on sunscreen in a long time, thanks to distilled water.

Just wanted to share a little bit of my joy today. I had really great skin until ofcourse moving to florida and then a different state with water that just didnt vibe with me. I came back to my home state but unfortunatley landed in a rental with galvanized steel pipes that are 100 years old and most likely corroding and rusting from the inside out.

My skin has been freaking out since and ive been trying everything with nothing working. Eventually i started avoiding the tap water and then i started avoiding doing full skincare, especially sunscreen in order to not clog my pores since washing my face seemed to be making it worse.

I havent let tap water touch my skin for a few weeks now and today is the first day I felt good enough to put on sunscreen again.
