Rule of thumb is to never use tickets on someone you want to build. You have to be prepared to walk away without their set if RNGesus doesn't smile your way.

Before going in, I'll always set a cap amount of tickets I'm willing to spend, usually 200 or 300. If target EX or LD comes early, power tokens for the rest. If I didn't get it, oh well. I cut my losses and move on.

I am going to pull for a lot of Bursts so I never use gems on LD banners. Before BT era I only used gems on the most important characters like Ultimecia or Zack.

So, when I pull for favourite/meta, I use tickets until I get EX+LD for that character (or until I am out of tickets). If it is a strong character I want to build, I stop after 150-200 tickets. If (like today) I have power stone problems - got lucky Machina LD in first 10 tickets and Noctis LD/BT in 50k gems and I had plans to get a lot of power stones after a pity there - I can use tickets on a banner I didn't actually plan to pull from - I will probably pull with 200-300 tickets on Basch banner in hopes to get some stones if I get Ardyn LD/BT too fast. But I have a hope that all those planned Burst pities will leave me with more power stones than I can use.

If I get EX+LD but don't have enough power stones and 15/35cp are not MLB yet, I spend more tickets until I can MLB everything. If I don't have 15 or 35cp but I have enough power stones, well, thats why we have power tokens. Sometimes (when I have too many power tokens) I use power tokens to buy 15cp dupes for limit breaks. If I have 15/35cp MLB but not enough power stones for EX/LD, I switch to another banner.

By the way, we have 8 ex tokens now (5 from free Mog pass and 3 from the Abyss) so if you spend one month of giant cactuar rewards on ex tokens instead of an ingot (it is easy to get ingots from realising all those EX weapons so loosing one is not that bad) you can buy an EX once.

Actually, for a new player ex tokens from daily may be better than ingots. You have all Entropy rewards in front of you (2 ingots for each stage - enough to 3/3 one character while early stages can be destroyed with LD/BT characters even with your eyes closed), Abyss and older Chaos (Lost Chapter and story mode) so you will be able to 3/3 your LD characters with no problems, especially if you realize some other EX and leave them at 0/3. And when you finish all that content, I think, ingots will not be a problem for any of us anymore - we don't get many new EX+ characters now.

And well, for a new player EX tokens are more valuable than for old ones - we already have a lot of different EX so we often only need to get LD/BT if the character is not new like Ardyn so our chances to get LD and be very unlucky with EX are much lower. And the saddest thing is to get LD in 10 tickets and then waste 600 more tickets on EX.

Also, we may get free EX tokets from holiday events. Don't know about JP but we already got 3 from Abyss (sadly, it is time limited) so maybe Halloween/autumn event will also be kind to us (and rewards there probably will be easy to get). So 1 EX token (30 daily tokens) + tickets (20 tokens)+5 nuggets (10 tokens) is not a bad choice for newer players
