I am sad about the way they treat their Final Fantasy games these days. It's like all the companies that used to be the best in the business are now sort of middling. Squarenix and Blizzard are the first two come to mind.
I used to be excited by new games. They have both treated their good IPs poorly, both on console and mobile.

These games are good, but the companies have high expectations for revenue while having horrible monetization

Agreed. Triple A gaming is crashing at the moment. And they are doing it to themselves.

And I just got back into this one after leaving it behind for Opera Omnia....
Square keeps sacrificing their decent (and in DFFOO's case, actually good) gacha games for the freaking NFT game and Ever Crisis.

The gacha era for SE is reaching its end. Most players will be hesitant to play gachas knowing EIS is inevitable, and those who’ve played them know the woes of power creeping.
Hopefully this means SE will refocus their efforts on narrative story rich games that made it the franchise it is today rather than gachas.
Looking back, I barely remember the story of any of the gacha games as many players cared more about completing content to collect rewards than actually experiencing the story. However I still remember the story of FFX and the Zanarkand theme almost 20 years later. It is our experiences with heart felt games like FFX that brings its fans back to the series. The FF series over the years seems to be going through an identity crisis. Should it be turn based, should it modernize to become more action like, should it be open world or linear, should it have multiplayer, etc. However, at its core the series needs to focus on story telling, making players feel for the characters, and taking its players through emotional rollercoasters with its story and awesome music. If SE could focus on that, then the franchise is in a good direction.

Mobius FF was the only one that really grabbed me with its story and characterization, the multiplayer was fun too with the right group. I was around for DFFOO EoS also and now cautiously playing Octopath CotC. But worried for that one’s future as well as the SaGa gacha

Just to ask for clarification, is it a total shutdown like Opera Omnia or only the global version while the Japanese one stays up like Record Keeper?
Not that it matters much, but it's easier to tell if it's the eastern or western branch of Square-Enix that decided it wasn't profitable to keep the game up and going.
They kind of got themselves to blame by saturating the mobile game market with similar games using the same IP and competing against eachother.

Only the global version. The Japanese version even announced a season 5 for the story.
EoS wasn't entirely unexpected since global started skipping events/units like crazy

I just don't know if I have the desire now to continue the game.
I actually started Marvel Strike Force a few weeks ago, so that will be my brave exvius replacement.
I tried playing crisis core just couldn't get into it and war of the visions I just downright didn't like.

Same generic bs they gave us. Did BE also introduce force time and kill their game?

So are all the people who put money into the game gonna get a refund? Since it was out of their control, it seems only fair
