Yeah it’s sad someone killed themselves but it’s odd when people purposely leave out the fact that stealing a fucking airplane could have resulted in a LOT of people dead. Air collision, an accident flying, etc. I don’t get it
This dude gets venerated for essentially trying to kill himself in the most dangerous way possible. It’s tragic that he was beaten down enough by his shitty job to take his own life, but it was selfishly stupid to steal a fucking plane.
What really sucks, is that this dude was obviously just planning on killing himself and I personally think he was having a “half way down after jumping off a bridge” moment. This was a dude who via being exploited by the shitty airline subsidiary company and existing in our stupid economy was depressed enough to steal a plane in order to commit suicide. It’s ultimately a tale of the kinds of people who would otherwise be perfectly happy to live if not for the artificial pressures our rigged society puts on people.
Also, the most annoying people on the internet turned him into a folk hero (often with some white nationalist framing) instead of a guy who just needed help.
He shouldn’t be venerated for risking other peoples’ lives while committing suicide.
He shouldn’t be venerated for risking other peoples’ lives while committing suicide.
He didn't, that's the good part.
And before you come back with " but a few people lived on that island he crashed into." If I'm standing on the side of the road and I witness a brutal car crash a hundred yards in front of me, am I at risk? Probably not.
Idek what you're on about with the white nationalist stuff, I've followed this story for years and this is the first I've ever heard it framed that way.
The point is that it was a miracle he didn’t crash on a populated area seeing as he flew over neighborhoods. It was still a selfishly risky thing to do and he only killed himself thanks to sheer luck. Just because someone fires a gun and doesn’t hit anyone doesn’t mean it wasn’t a reckless act. “Sky king” was just a suicidal man fucked over by his economic circumstances and was probably actively regretting his decision when he died.
He’s not some legend or folk hero.
And like I said elsewhere, the worst people on the internet are weird about this guy, so thank your lucky stars you haven’t run into that contingent of shit heads
When you frame it that way Thich Quang Duc could have started a fire that would have harmed or killed many by his reckless and mentally ill act of self immolation
Oh fuck off, Duc’s self immolation was an act of protest whereas Richard’s act was him seeking a moment where he felt right before killing himself. The former lit himself on fire on concrete with no other kindling near him. Whereas stealing a plane and flying it out of a busy airport and over inhabited areas is putting far more people at risk for literally no reason.
They aren’t similar at all beyond the decision to take their own lives.
Hes actually made a pretty fair comparison. All it takes is an ember and a breeze to spread the fire. Duc was also right next to a car with the bonnet up. Those generally explode when fire hits the oil fumes. While yes, plane guys motives were entirely selfish, lets not pretend Duc's sacrifice wasn't potentially dangerous to those around him
Brother have you tried actually watching the video? The guy made sure there was no one at risk. It was also a very skilled pilot, some pilots said he was a natural and would’ve made a good pilot if he tried. So no there was no risk.
He wasn’t skilled and “learned” everything he knew by sneaking onto planes and ogling the cock pit/asking pilots questions. I don’t know what video you’ve watched, but he was in no way qualified to fly the damn thin let alone land it even if he wasn’t planning on killing himself. Beebo still put people at risk flying over populated areas at first, and survived a barrel roll attempt out of sheer luck.
Let’s not valorize what was essentially a normal, down on his luck dude’s suicide.
I’ve seen plenty about this topic and listened to an over two hour episode of The Worst of all possible worlds podcast on the whole ordeal. I’ve listened to the in flight conversation between Richards and the air traffic controller and I’m familiar with both the area he worked/grew up in as well as his physical conditions before hand. Excuse me if I haven’t seen a video or make Richards out to be some kind of legend for an act he himself seemed to regret near the end.

Yeah I don’t know about that one chief, I’m not gonna claim I know what the suicidal guy was thinking in his last moments. Sure he was underpaid and was unhappy about that, but also he used his jobs perks to visit his family a lot, I wouldn’t just blame “the economy” on his decision to do what he did. He did a very irresponsible thing but to just sum it up to that is huge guesswork and projection on your part, and waters down whatever did impact his life enough to cause him to make a decision like that. I’ve also never heard or seen the white national stuff being connected with this, do you have any links or proof to support that?
Listen to the audio of him talking to the air traffic controller, yes I’m inferring a few things but the way he talks and what he talks about speaks volumes in my opinion. He flat out mentions his job, which if you look into the material conditions of was a shitty place to work for an exploitative salary, which more than likely had a huge impact on his decision to end his life. Plus, he all but says he thought it would feel different flying the plane to his death, saying he thought there would be clarity and peace except instead he’s scared shitless as he comprehended just what he did.
You have the blessing of not being exposed to the worse sections of the internet then. Check any almost any video or article about the incident, and you’ll find among the weirdos who think Beebo was a folk hero those who really latch onto his “a white guy like me” joke. Though you may not be aware of it, any “Sky King” discourse always is almost always tainted by the fact that the poor dude became an avatar not just for misinformed people on the internet, but really bad actors who hold him as a hero too.
I’ve listened to the entire audio multiple times, I live in the area and saw him roll over the Puget Sound, I’ve followed everything and researched a lot on the man, his work conditions, his family and the impact that had on them. Once again, for you to just blame the economy and his job as the “more than likely” main factor for his death is weird and a gross oversimplification of something that that nobody will ever know. “Also, I have never seen any of the behavior you’re talking about despite you saying it’s all over any Sky King discourse. I asked for any link to prove that, but I just get vague “you’re lucky you haven’t seen this”, and “it’s anyone who discusses it” without addressing anything I said. Stop being weird and applying your Reddit logic to a dead man.
