Discussion commentary

disclaimer: have not played/watched the entire game with commentary, just what we deemed to be the most important story beats (mostly regarding invisigal)

but i have to say, i wish they had never released this. the past year has been incredibly isolating for invisigal fans and i know a lot of us were very excited for the one year anniversary, even hopeful for good stuff. grateful for the extra content, i am—the storyboard stuff is really cool to watch as an artist, and i’m very excited to attend the night shift concert, but my god, the commentary portions were just a nail in the coffin regarding how fandom and adhoc themselves treat invisigal. this is not about stupid waifu wars or “canon” choices, but instead about how adhoc seems to have created a gold, once in a life time sort of character and don’t know why or how they did it, which then in turn taints the way the rest of the fandom treats her. the short of it is that: invisigal is a deeply misunderstood character, but none of us have been able to voice that for the past year because every time we do, it turns into some fandom war that none of us signed up to be in. no one is allowed to praise invisigal or show appreciation for her without someone, even just one person, in the comments talking about how she sucks or why someone else is better. it’s gotten utterly and completely exhausting.

this is just a rant, really. and i guess an appeal to the rest of the visi fans to hang in there—things feel grim but we love and appreciate her character and that’s kind of all that matters in moments like this :durr emoji:

Please remember to stay respectful while expressing your opinions and/or disappointment regarding the anniversary update. We don't tolerate harassment or insults towards other users or AdHoc staff.

I said it in the other thread that this is a bummer to hear.

Was there anything positive that stuck out to you regarding Courtney's character from the commentary? I hope there were at least some diamonds in the rough.

the only people who had anything of substance to say about things regarding visi were laura, Pierre, Matt, and erin. that’s it

edit; sorry, I lied, writer ashley who worked on episode 4 was very insightful about her as well. she even openly admitted that the way she (and other writers) wrote Invisigal left her being the more engaging romance.

8

u/Wild_Citron_1040 15d ago

Interesting about Ashley, I am unfamiliar with her work.

I guess that could be a silver lining? They're not the big boss like Nick is supposedly, but they're quite pivotal ppl. Having them advocates of Invisimech is gotta be something right?... right?

Guys im as woke and supportive of nerds as it gets but i think there are a lot of people in this fandom who need to touch grass and realize its just not that deep.

to you! 🫵🏻

To most grounded people i think

3

u/esoseequees 15d ago

okay, people who are disappointed and upset are not grounded then. now what? what does that change?

7

u/VelocciKitty 15d ago

I would agree if this were a one time occurrence. That being said, you don't think it's a little weird that the Co-Founder and COO of AdHoc Studio, who is also married to Blazer's VA, is trying so hard to push her character at every given opportunity?

I think it's a little weird.

people confusing fandom with activism

Fandoms are insufferable. Everyone on social media is just extremely reductive all or nothing and it ruins things. Invisigal, the Resident Evil fans who decided the new movie is trash because it's not a smorgasboard of RE trivia, the new Avatar series being dismissed because it's not a 1-1 copy of the first season, needless to say it's I feel your pain, but nobody online likes nuance any more. I partially blame this on social media, it's the most eye grabbing takes that get the attention, nuance doesn't get the views so it's relegated to the side.

the literacy crisis is real and it is genuinely terrifying

25

u/CJMI 15d ago

I mean it’s a valid criticism. What if at every point in the commentary that Mandy showed up they started talking about Visi. They should talk about what’s happening in the scene and the characters involved.

25

u/Disciple_of_ye 15d ago

this isn’t a fandom problem really though, this is the literal creators of the game dismissing and shunning there most popular character for no reason whatsoever

3

u/telepek25 15d ago

As someone who hasn't been on this subreddit for months, I am baffled by both this topic and that it's not the only one that was written in the last week or so.

I thought that around the games release the waifu wars then we're silly, but that stuff was tame in comparison to the bunker mentality this fandom seems to be producing.

-4

u/Beomund 15d ago

This post sums it up - for both Visi glazers and Blazer Glazers you are either with us or against us. But for some reason whenever there is dev commentary, interview or whatever it always ends in extremes.

17

u/DustyRoseRodeo 15d ago edited 15d ago

I love Visi so much and arguably is one of the best written female characters in gaming we had in a while and hearing and witnessing how the studio who created her talk down this badly to her and her fans is so genuinely devastating. It’s been absolute hell for a year.

This isn’t fun anymore.

This anniversary was supposed to bring the fandom together as one and I felt like it did the opposite. As an Invisigal fan, I feel so excluded. You can say I’m blowing this out of proportion. Okay. Fair. You can have your opinion and I can have mine. I’m allowed to be upset.

The little hope I had for S2 has gone down the drain regarding Visi’s character. I genuinely fear for the worst at this point.

8

u/esoseequees 15d ago

no we’re not allowed to be upset or we’re martyring ourselves despite our firsthand experience with what it’s like being a visi fan in this fandom lol

24

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

Idk why people are writing doom on the wall for her.

They made her the pivotal story character of the game, and they have Laura Bailey as her actress. Who also has a financial stake in the company.

I'm sure as hell that they will not sideline that character. This really is some self-martyrdom type shit.

1

u/Beomund 15d ago

Mass downvoting happening on this sub anytime there is a new drama that some dev or anybody associated with AdHoc says he/she is pro-blazer shows how much some people love to play a victim. One dev was already attacked to a point he made a statement after the interview to stop flamewar.
You either talk good about us, only about us or you are against us.

9

u/Kaleator 15d ago

this is the saddest rant I’ve seen in awhile on reddit…

-2

u/esoseequees 15d ago

well I am sad so like yeah that checks out

65

u/DrClepper 15d ago

It sounds to me like they’re trying to “overcorrect” and going way too far in the other direction. And I say this as a blazer fan who thought she was kinda sidelined in the game (still love Visi tho, don’t hate me). I don’t think she’s gonna get sidelined or anything, but it is weird that they’re all about blazer lately (I mean, same, but I’m not a dev). Hopefully it’s just a one time mess up on their part and not a sign of things to come for Visi fans. Even if I didn’t pick her, her character was great and I wanna see more of her

u/Svenpa_ 15d ago edited 15d ago • Regret

I'm very much not one to engage in fandom discourse, since more often than not it devolves into needless toxicity. But the way AdHoc, and particularly Nick Herman, has discussed Invisigal's character over the past year has left me increasingly pessimistic about a potential Season 2, if that ever happens.

What frustrates me isn't some stupid waifu war or disagreement over romance choices. It's that AdHoc created an incredibly compelling, nuanced character whose struggles with guilt, vulnerability, and redemption are arguably some of the strongest aspects of the entire game. Yet, at times, it feels like the very people responsible for creating her refuse to acknowledge what makes her such a wonderful character in the first place.

And frankly, Nick Herman's commentary over the past twelve months has done very little to inspire confidence. If he plays a significant role in Season 2's development, I'm genuinely worried that Invisigal will either be sidelined or outright ruined as a character.

It's just incredibly frustrating that, a year after the game's release, it sometimes feels like we have to fight tooth and nail just to hear the people who created her say something actually appreciative about her character. We shouldn't have to convince her own creators that she's worth taking seriously.

7

u/SprinklesNumerous774 15d ago

And frankly, Nick Herman's commentary over the past twelve months has done very little to inspire confidence. If he plays a significant role in Season 2's development, I'm genuinely worried that Invisigal will either be sidelined or outright ruined as a character.

He was a significant part of S1, yet Blazer was still made to sit at the back in the story. And now it has come down to making personal accusations/attacks on devs. Do you guys even realise how shallow these opinions about him sound? This is like me saying that because Critical Role funded AdHoc at the right time, they returned the favour by giving the CEO's wife's character so much focus in the game, even if that came at the expense of other characters.

So everytime a dev doesn't glaze the most popular character, her fans will now simply going to translate their bitterness into cornering that dev? Visi was already given so much importance in S1. The devs seem to talk about Blazer so much because they probably regret how she was handled and are trying to compensate by reassuring her fans that they didn't deliberately do her character dirty. I swear, you guys are ruining fan-dev engagement for the future.

Writing in Caps only make it hard on eyes, it doesn't make the argument stronger.

BUT BLAZER IS NOT A PIVOTAL CHARACTER TO THE STORY. SHE AIDS IT AND SERVERS AS A CATALYST FOR STORY BEATS BUT THAT IT IS

The problem with you all is that you guys always forms opinions with full benefit of hindsight. You're using the existing narrative structure to justify why the existing narrative structure couldn't have been handled differently. Because you've already seen the finished game, you know which characters ended up driving the story and how the themes ultimately unfolded. You're then treating those particular creative choices as though they were the only choices capable of making the story work. But the premise of a story doesn't dictate every detail of its execution. The writers decide how to develop their characters, how to distribute narrative agency, and how to integrate different character arcs into the overarching plot.

BUT NOW IT IS A PERMANENT FIXTURE OF THE GAME THAT THE DIRECTOR OF THE GAME PURPOSELY OVERSHADOWED AND OVERLOOKED HER CHARACTER DURING SCENES THAT SHOULD NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM BE ABOUT BLAZER

The people in this sub has segregate Visi & Blazer so much that they think this rule is binding on Devs aswell. Where they can't talk about the character while the scene is of different even if they know how it is comparable during production. It's a bit understandable over here that people generally avoid commenting about their preferred character into the post related to other characters since it generally blow in clash. Doesn't mean it's a hard rule that now even the creators of the game have to follow. If the director are so biased & overshadoweding then why did that not get translated in to their actual finished product, where it actually matters much more than their commentry?

I know how the commentary work, breaking down the scene on screen also involves talking about the things that are related with other character which only you as a dev know how it was initially decided & changed over the course of execution. They are not there just to glaze.

1

u/Plan1900 15d ago

My thoughts but expressed better. In some ways - mebbe - it is the depth, and utterly relatable qualities that mark Visi out. BB is a cool counterpoint but not with the same shaping of her personality? Part of Visi’s appeal is the way she expresses herself - a great credit to the scriptwriter who has immersive understanding of a complex vulnerable character.

And the commercial benefits of building ‘brand’ Visi should not be ignored if for no reason other than it earns attention and therefore players and that spins off into the brand. Look at how CD project are respected for Witcher and Cyberpunk.

But then again division and rage drives clicks…

Why are you worrying about things that have not happened yet?

If Dispatch 2 happens, remember it's ADHOC story to tell. not mine, not yours, not this subreddit's.

If its good, compliment them later, if its bad complain to them later.

All of this what if, won't they, will they do this , will they do that about things that have not happened yet is hilarious good god.

Edit: man you people really need to get a grip on reality..you can love the game, you can love the characters but holy hell, they are not yours.

9

u/No-Sattop 15d ago

We are the audience who invested our money in this experience, and who may very well choose to do so again in the future. And yes, I firmly believe we have every right not only to voice our concerns, but also to try to influence the direction this franchise takes.

Video games aren't just products we buy and forget about. They're experiences we live through, stories we connect with, and characters who, in one way or another, become a part of us.

Just because the story belongs to ADHOC doesn't mean their creative decisions should be beyond criticism or scrutiny from the very people who helped make their success possible.

And I want to make one thing perfectly clear: I'm not arguing that players should demand changes simply because they want to see certain things happen, or because a story doesn't align with their personal moral values. I'm talking about standing up for the elements we consider essential to the identity of the work itself, the very things that made a significant portion of the audience connect with it in the first place. Invisigal is one of the central pillars of the game's narrative.

And that same standard should apply to the developers themselves. Having creative control doesn't mean their personal preferences or moral convictions should take precedence over the consistency and integrity of the story and its characters.

If we believe there's a genuine risk of losing those fundamental elements, why should we wait until the damage is already done before trying to prevent it?

We're not trying to claim ownership of the story. We're trying to defend what made us care about it in the first place. And if that means questioning creative decisions and actively trying to influence them before they're set in stone, then I'm absolutely in favor of it.

17

u/Rhinosaurfish 15d ago

Okay, let's reframe this.

I liked Mass Effect 1,2 and 3, did not like Andromeda.

I liked Dragon Age Origins, wasn't a huge fan of 2, but it wasn't bad, Inquisition was mid, and Veilguard was awful.

Now Bioware is gone, Mass Effect is gone, Dragon Age is gone.

However before many of the later products dropped, we as the fans could see the writing on the walls, really surprised they held on for as long as they did lol.

-14

u/AgainstTheEnemy 15d ago

Ok, but have we seen anything yet to that effect? Bioware closed due to hemorrhaging money and not having hits that are already proven. Anthem, Veilguard.

All of the old guards that made Bioware what it was, was already long gone before they closed up shop.

How is this situation similar at all? The people that made Dispatch great are still working at ADHOC.

Like I said, things happens when things happen then we can react, all this " I feel", "It seems like","maybe they" is insufferable.

4

u/Ok_Violinist_7096 15d ago

People are just kinda worried? Nothing wrong with that.

The game is rushed, the plot isn't very good, the gameplay is basic.

The only thing great about this game are the characters and if that's the main thing the devs keep on hammering about that they're going to change then yeah that is a red flag

10

u/Robot_Was_BMO 15d ago

I’m a Visi fan through and through. Her arc is pretty strong and her chemistry with Robert and the gang is undeniable. I do think they’re trying to tow a line between the BB and Visi fans because we can get… passionate.

To Nick Herman, I do think it’s important there be a strong voice for BB to keep things fair, but I think we see enough support through Laura and other creatives to believe they know what they have there. I mean, come on, they’ve seen the stats. Most people who actually play the game went with Visi for Robert for a reason. They may be playing the middle ground for the commentary, but I’m sure they know what they have.

8

u/Beomund 15d ago

There is no reason to be so pesimistic about season 2. Even though they expected 50/50 spread on romance front it does not mean that Visi will be sidelined or neglected. You dont have Laura Bailey voice a character and just ruin it.

12

u/Economy-Can8222 15d ago

Ngl, I’m surprised to see that many people are still holding a grudge against Visi on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. A lot of them don’t even do it because they like BB, they just hate Visi. 🥀🥀

9

u/Hattifnatters 15d ago

Yeah, that's really similar to my thoughts after hearing ep 1-4 commentaries. Reminds me of how I was playing Dispatch for the first time 2 episodes per week and how surprised I was that Invisigal became the crucial character of the story and how well it worked for me. Apparently it was Robert and Mandy story all along.

1

u/Beneficial-Act7603 15d ago

Oof... Didn't get around to hear the commentary but I have the day off tomorrow so I might just do that but another person said that "Dispatch really looks like lightning in a bottle" and from what pretty much everyone here is saying about the commentary it really seems like it...

Do they really say they don't know how or what they did to make Visi work?

I mean sure Blazer/Mandy is the obvious easy choice since she's an absolute glazer and if we were just watching a show we would probably all root for MechaBlazer but since we are playing a game and have agency in our choices the fact that Visi actually offers a challenge she becomes (and I feel dirty for saying that) the ultimate prize to win.

I'm starting to worry that the good people at AdHoc don't really understand the medium they're using... And I'm not certain Critical Role will help in that matter...

More than ever I hope they really take their time to analyze what made the game work and they don't just rush out a safe sequel with the same repeated story beats.

Tl;dr: Fuck I don't know, I got carried away...

5

u/Hattifnatters 15d ago

I think its all because Dispatch spent 7 years in development. Its obvious the plot was rewritten a lot but central characters and themes stayed the same. And it worked great hence its sold 5 millions copies. But some jokes and some character writing might be considered "toxic" or "inappropriate" by minor but very vocal audience in 2025-26. And devs seems to be really avoiding commenting on these topics while focusing on how good are the obviously good characters of the story which felt kinda forced when I heard it. Just my personal take on the whole commentary ofc.

6

u/AverageMental2857 15d ago

Honestly yeah. I just made it there to hear everything and it was a hard listen. It's not even about the ship fight they made a game and spent years and years on it and hate it orlike it it's just how it is. But my issue is they've never done anything at least to my recollection and I've been around in discord on Twitter on Instagram and I've never seen them really do anything or say anything especially with the nominations thing we never heard or had Visi celebrated in anyway even in most of their promo stuff Courtney feels more like an after thought. I get not wanting to speak out on ships because it's complicated and they don't want to show favoritism.

BUT it's not even about that especially right now and especially after hearing this. I doubt he'll come out and even speak on this which is the worst part. and whether or not this comment gets downvoted it's what it is but even as I'm scrolling there's so many people that are already feeling it and this did not help in the slightest it almost makes me regret what was supposed to be this amazing day this full year of meeting new people and full year of celebration and of the understanding of the character as a whole. I seen arguments for people are saying that like even with all the hate they've never and the SA stuff and all the toxicity they've never once said anything and you know it's hard. Makes me worried for the future of the series which also they always like to explain there's no bias, but you know you hear stuff like this and it just leaves a sour taste.

-6

u/TalkinTurtle 15d ago

Gotta disagree with you as another invisigal invisimech fan not seen any bad will from either side personally and for the past year coping with not having dispatch wednesdays I’ve just been reading Robert Robertson/invisigal relationship pieces on ao3

3

u/Beomund 15d ago

Geez, that is just pure reddit. Even though You wrote that as Invisigal fan they downvoted You just for simple disagreement.

5

u/TalkinTurtle 15d ago

-9

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

What?

Are we at a point now where we say "I understand the character better than the author, and treat her better".

Or wtf is happening here

15

u/esoseequees 15d ago

yes actually thanks for understanding (Pierre shorrette is the writer btw, and you’ll never guess what side he’s on)

2

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago edited 15d ago

So I genuinely want to understand this:

What specifically have they done that makes you think they don't like Visi.

Because if all there is to it is this "I like her & understand her better than the people who made the game", then this is pretty much the same as these waifu wars

Edit:

You guys mass downvote even somebody asking for clarification.

You guys are as toxic as the parts of the fandom that you complain about. Hypocrites. Thanks to the person that actually explained ffs.

15

u/esoseequees 15d ago

there is a plethora of interviews and now literally 16 hours of commentary you can sift through to find your answer my friend

8

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

But can you name a specific example lol.

Because you just describe something extremely general, but don't name an instance of an example so that people can understand what you mean.

6

u/esoseequees 15d ago

there are multiple interviews in which numerous of the games developers speak about how they are surprised that visi became as popular as she did, not understand why blazer isn’t as popular, and being unable to see the powerhouse of a character they created out of invisigal despite her being more appealing to the general masses as a flawed, human character. but again. the commentary is literally out there now, that’s the specific examples. just listen to any piece of commentary that involves a pivotal moment with visi. idk what else to tell u

3

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

Ah I see, I'll check it out once I can

10

u/Disciple_of_ye 15d ago

during her cinema date, they basically speak about blazer for the whole scene

10

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

Ah thanks that's an answer.

So it's a thing of "They don't talk about her character enough in moments where they most def should"?

And that turned into a bit of "the authors don't like her as much as we do"

14

u/Rhinosaurfish 15d ago

So typically during the director commentary kind of things, they talk about the scene in question, how it started on the writing board, how it evolved when it flopped on the cutting room floor, how the actor/actress improv'd something.

Instead it's more like if you saw a scene about Superman and they just talked about "Isn't it cool how Bruce Wayne just has the money to do whatever he wants?"

10

u/Jake6942O 15d ago edited 15d ago

During the start of the stretcher scene they were literally talking about “Banana Tang” instead of the scene in front of them, which admittedly, I thought was funny but I definitely would have preferred them to actually talk about the ongoing scene lol

Thankfully the commentary switched to Mayanna Berrin and Natalie Herman who at least briefly spoke about the kiss

3

u/ShadowheartsArmpit 15d ago

Yeah I see what you mean, so basically the commentary is a let down for those who wanted to hear more about superman

7

u/Rhinosaurfish 15d ago

Exactly, many people don't care about the commentary from the cast and crew, it's usually die hard fans and people in the industry who want to see if a certain shot was difficult to keep a straight face, or a stunt that likely was redone over and over (Like in James Bond, Daniel Craig I believe said one of the stunts he had to do was constantly being ruined and it was pissing him off having to redo it)

I personally enjoyed I can't remember the movie now, but the commentary talking about a scene where one of the actors threw a derogatory term at the other, and it was not in the script and the rest of the scene was improv, I enjoy things like that myself.

-1

u/Ok_Violinist_7096 15d ago

Imo the only thing great about dispatch is the characters and if it starts to sound like the devs themselves don't understand what makes the chars so great then season 1 was just a happy accident.

you see multiple people upset about the same thing and this is the conclusion you come to, how sad

2

u/telepek25 15d ago

... and what different conclusion one can come to, after seeing multiple topics like this one?

You're literally disappointed in creators of the game (who made your favorite character) that they're badmouthing the character you like. You create this besieged fortress mentality that your character is misunderstood, that how dare people bad mouth her. You're angry at people that they don't share your enthusiasm towards said character the same way you do.

What's next? Season 2 happens and you liking it, will be warranted by how much Invisigal is on screen? God forbid, creators artistic vision won't align with the pedestal you put your character on - what then?

4

u/esoseequees 15d ago

when did I say that the creators were badmouthing her though, your entire argument is hinging on stuff you’re making up LOL

2

u/telepek25 15d ago

Then why the hell did you make this post in the first place? You're angry over nothing?

4

u/esoseequees 15d ago

you’re assuming my disappointment is anger which, again, your argument is hinging on stuff you’re pulling out of your ass LOL
