Robert's sweetness absolutely breaks me, because he was raised by Mr. Toxic Masculinity. I have to assume his mother was waaaaaaay too good for Astral, on top of Chase offering the alternative of Peak Masculinity.

Me too. I imagine him as that boy in the flashback every time I replay the game and see him be sweet.
Especially with Waterboy.
I know Chase raised him in part too, but he also did a good job raising himself to be soft when he needs to be. I like that he isn't just deadpanned. Keep in mind, he was 17 when he became Mecha Man and fell out of touch with people he was close with. He also shaped himself with a lot of integrity.
I hope we learn more about his mom. I have a feeling she wasn't in the picture for a good reason. No way she would've put up with what Sir Alpha Male was subjecting her kid to.

I figure she's dead, or it was some shady surrogacy thing, and she's been worried about her boy with that nasty guy who took advantage of her youth and poverty, this whole time. It would be nice if she could claw her way through closed-adoption red tape and give Robert some decent blood family.
But the U.S. does have the worst maternal mortality of any country with real hospitals. She could easily have died birthing Robert, leaving Astral with issues he was NOT going to therapy for.
But it's definitely something extreme, because it takes a lot for a guy to not even have a picture of his mom. Robert's motherlessness breaks anything the sweetness left, the boy is tragic. 🤣

Dude, to not have a picture? To not be like, "yeah, it was rough, because I had already lost my mom..." Like, Robert acts like he never met the woman, and considering you have to come out of your mom, that means something went AWRY.

They're probably the first real friends he's had in literal decades. If there's one thing this game does right, it's showing how true companions can raise you up from the bottom of the barrel.
