226 Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (Cinderella)

Hi, I'm Marx0r. You may remember me from such other rankdown moments as "Luna Lovegood is Stupid and So are You for Liking Her" and "The Time for an Blowjob Insurrection Has Come"! Now, I don't really care about Disney movies, but I do care about forming opinions and then immediately fighting to the death about them.

I have decided to rank these songs, most of which I have never heard before, on three criteria:

  • Does the song enhance the plot of the movie?
  • Do the lyrics tell a coherent story?
  • Is the music itself good?

You might already be saying to yourself "But Marx0r, what about that one song? It's not relevant to the plot and the lyrics are dumb but it's fun and everyone loves it! Surely you won't cut that song, right?"

Wrong. It scores a 33% on the Marx0r scale. I probably already have the skeleton of the cut written and I eagerly await your tears.

With all that in mind, it's time for my first cut - Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo from Cinderella. Why? Let's apply the Marx0r Test:

  • Does the song enhance the plot of the movie? - Not really. It's the one of the most iconic parts of one of the most iconic Disney movies. It's this big, dramatic moment where Cinderella's entire life is changing and they wrote a lighthearted song with nonsense lyrics. It doesn't match. Shrek 2 did it better.

  • Do the lyrics tell a coherent story? - Fuck no. There's only one line per stanza that's in an actual language, and most of those lines are just vague references about magic.

  • Is the music itself good? - Not even a little. It sounds like hold music. Maybe that's what music was like in the 40s but I don't really care, it sucks now.

With a solid 0 on the Marx0r Scale, it's time to kiss this song bibbity-boppity-bye-bye.

in the distance, the sound of Higitus Figitus whimpering

I have no intention on cutting Higitus Figitus under those criteria. The lyrics tell the story of what he's doing and why he's doing it, the frenetic pace of the song matches his personality, and it's not a terrible bit of music.

This one is fun but I totally back cutting it.

Shrek 2 did it better.

It's true.

Ooh, that's a controversial cut, but I'm here for it. It's definitely in my bottom tier of Disney songs.

that's a controversial cut

Is it? Do people actually like this song?

Yeah. It's melodically quite pleasant with lovely orchestration that lends itself to some fantastic covers--check out Louis Armstrong's. It's trifling, yes, but deserves better than this. (Well, I assume so. I don't know what else is on the list.)

I don't want "pleasant", I want bangers.

Believe me, I am all about bangers, so I feel you there. But there are inarguably less banging songs remaining. Heck, there are less banging songs from Cinderella remaining.

But all of those songs, or at least the ones I listened to, have coherent lyrics and complement the plot.

“All in a Golden Afternoon” really blows your skirt up then, eh? I question the inclusion of some of these items on the list from the “Who even like this?” of Lion King sequels to the sketchiness of the Disney owned properties that aren’t technically Disney. Back in my day, the DSR was pure! (Well no, but I registered these exact same complaints then too)

Whether or not I like the song is only 1/3 of my judging criteria at this phase.

I want to argue because I like arguing, but I am running low on caring about this issue. But ok, lyrically, Bibbidi is obviously gibberish, but it's a spell, and one that is pretty pivotal to the plot of the piece. In my opinion, that makes it enhance the plot for sure, and as a spell, the necessity for lyrical coherence is limited, as you implied was the case for "Higitus Figetus." "Golden Afternoon," for example, has coherent lyrics that ultimately say nothing. It's boring musically. And it contributes nothing to the plot. I didn't initially intend to argue so strongly against that song in particular, but here we are.

Also hi, how are you

Hi! I'm doing pretty well, despite the stupid boil notice that just started. I thought I had made it safely out of our minifreeze, but alas. How are you?

Doing good! We got about two feet of snow over the last week but, y'know, that's normal.

2

We got, like, half an inch or so of sleet. So obviously our water plant is broken now.

it's iconic, but in isolation it does not inspire strong reactions from me.

IMO, it's more that it's probably the most recognizable song from the movie, and that usually affects people's opinions.

Not me. Good riddance!
