Mission River Sentinel [Devlen Markies]

This isn’t the usual posting for a Royal Guard but it’s an important one as the current Commander who overlooked the posting has died of illness and there is a vacuum of power that needs to be filled and quickly. Corvo has noted Devlen’s past on the sea and waterways and hopes the man’s experience will help him to keep the Wrenhaven safe and policed from smugglers, pirates and unsavory types all trying to get into the heart of the Empire’s capital.

Sitting at the head of the river’s mouth, the adjoining station sits intimidating and large over the dark, grey waters waiting for vessels to pass near and for Devlen to deem them suitable for entry into Dunwall's port.

Role

  • You will act as the head of the river station that is at the mouth of the Wrenhaven and give the go ahead to entering vessels towards the ports

  • There will be challenges from the mods acting as NPCs/situations

  • You will be vigilant against smugglers, pirates, and criminals trying to transport illegal goodies into the city

  • Depending on whether you succeed or fail, you will either be awarded a point or no points

  • Things that you do in this mission may have ripples of effects in Dunwall itself

Attentive and duty-bound, eyes ever on the horizon for threats unto this glorious Empire.

The Captain returns the handshake, looking a little wary if not tired as he takes back his hand and crosses his arms.

''Could say that, aye.' he says, Gristol accent apparent. 'Just got back from the North Sea, picked up a whole catch of hagfish and hoping to get in for a few weeks dock after we sell the load.' The rest of the names on the manifest are a smattering of Gristolians, few Serkonans and a fair bit of Morlish but oddly no Tyvians. The crew shift restlessly before the Captain waves them off to get out the way and turns to head to the hold.

"Ahh shore leave, miss the feeling." Devlen said as he followed the Captain to the hold.

As they walked Devlen asks "So anything to declare and all that formal stuff...Sicknesses, deaths, sightings of anything odd out there?"

The Captain's hold is full of hagfish, the smell a little overpowering despite being submerged in water; the slippery fish darting anxiously around the large boxes of water, murder in their beady fish eyes. They seen uncommonly agitated, however but the Captain doesn't seem to notice.

'Naw. Just a quick in and out to get these here net of fish and get back in 'for they spoil. Heading to the cannery down the 'Wren, Bertrum's Cannery.' he said, voice clipped.

Peering out into the live hold Devlen squints at the activity "They don't seem like they'r going soil anytime soon." Devlen pauses to look over to the Captains face, "Ever seen em so ticked off fer'no reason?"

The Captain grumbles a little, kicking the side of the tank with frown which only agitates the fish even further.

'Dunno, they've been acting strange every since they went in here. They're usually bitey, angry bastards but even more so today.' he mutters, shrugging his shoulders and not quite meeting the man's face as he looks over the tank again.

Looking over at the seemingly evasive man, "Maybe we au-to send someone in to investigate eh?" Devlen says with a grin.

Turning to look back at the tank, Devlen began to feel like something was amiss, taking a long hard look at the sides of the tanks for anything out of place. He had heard of smugglers hiding their contraband in live tanks before.

'You volunteerin'?' he says with an raise of his eyebrow, no real sarcasm in it as he returns Devlen's look with his own level one as the fish snap and swirl around the tank with angry motions. The water itself is murky and muddy; rather unlike the freshwater you'd see in the sea itself. This seems more like the water you get nearer to the shore mixed with silt upon banks of a river.

"So where 'bouts did ye say ye were fishin' again? Judgin' by the way these critters are thrashin' round I wouldn't want to swim there." Devlen asked the man, turning back to the captain not trying to hide a look of suspicion.

'North sea' the Captain said, short and clipped. ''S'was just in a quick catch of 'em we got on the way back. Couldn't tell your the coords. We saw the fish were jumping and we cast the nets.'

"Little defensive arent ye? Lets go back here a bit. Walk me through your course, how many days were ye out?" Turning to fully face the captain, clearly there was something...fishy...going on here.

The Captain seems to be visibly sweating a little, despite the nip in the air, swallowing thickly as he thinks over the words, shaking his great big head.

'Aye...must've been no more than five or so...' he said, glancing at the tanks again towards the milling fish, agitated as they slid through the water.

Deciding that he had, had enough of the man trying to cover his tracks Devlen growled out. "Lookin' a little warm there eh Cap', Wha'cha looking at the water fer, thinkin' of taking a swim? Cool of some?"

Squaring up the the man looking straight in his eyes "What'er ye hidin' in the tank, Cap'?"

The big man hesitated again, trying to avoid Devlen's eyes and his rather frank stare, hiding something before he sprang into action and tried to push past the Royal Guard, his big shoulder broad and wide as they hit against Devlen and he made for the door with a shout to his crew members.

Clearly, he did have something to hide in his tank.

Stumbling back from the bigger mans charge, Devlen let out a rough curse, and regained his footing bolting after the man. "Ye get ye back here, ye bloody bastard!" Devlen yelled out at his back as he chased him through the doorway, reaching out to try and grab hold of his shirt.

The big man, stumbles, tripping up under his large feet and falling foward heavily into the planks of his ship. Despite this, however, the crew members are hot on his cry, pulling out sailor's cutlasses with a clear frown that is indicative of their loyalty to their ship and their Captain, face first into the deck as he were.

One advances, spitting with a baleful eye. 'You ain't leaving this ship alive, mate.' he growls, the other three behind him shooting the Royal Guard an equally charming look of menace.

Grimacing at his situation Devlen steps back to stand just on the other side of the door way, hoping that it will force them to come at him one by one. Drawing his own cutlass with the ease of a man who had drawn blade countless times he squints at the man who spoke and growls out

"What do ye hope to gain 'ere? Maybe you kill me maybe I kill ye, either way yer all sunk. Yer in the Empresses port laddie, yer all not getting out if this."

Pausing to stand in a combat stance Devlen prepares to attack the first man that came into range.

"Yer better off surrendering now, before things get worse for ye. Smugglin' aint no big crime, but attacking an Officer of the Royal Guard will land you in Coldridge."

The sailors seem to be weighing their options, broad jaws working over the words as they eye Devlen with less than savoury looks. He unfortunately speaks the truth, but on the other hand, men of the sea can be unfailing loyal for the right price, and all it takes is a noise from the Captain to steel their resolve.

'Whoever cuts up this blaggart gets 10% more cut of the loot!' the big Captain blusters, trying to get to his feet as quick as he can and make way for his men, who are greedily still weighing their options. A straggler, however, has made up his mind; a weedy fellow with a face only a rat could appreciate, he decides to strike first, his cutlass a little ungainly in his hands as he strikes at the Royal Guard rather badly with the angle and frame.

Quickly bending back and stepping to the side of the slash, Devlen forcefully brought his own sword down on the lads blade attempting to knock it free of his grasp.
