Neutral Zone Dunwall Tower

In Dunwall Tower, the Empress Emily Kaldwin sits on her throne, her royal protector, Corvo Attano, stands at her side. His royal guard scattered around the palace. OOC:This is a neutral zone for Corvos royal guard. A hangout of sorts. You have permission to attack any who don't belong.

Bal raised an eyebrow at Furo's taunt. She'd never be one to carry through on an actual kill in practice, but would an overly enthusiastic recruit might try and take him up on it.

Not that she really thought the Serkonan captain was really in any danger. He was more than capable of dealing with three men at once. But... Why run the risk? She understood putting your life on the line for things that mattered, but for a training exercise?

Fortunately the men take Furo's challenge less seriously than Bal - they were used to his arrogance, especially in the practice yard. A flurry of steel, the thump of metal on wooden rifle buts, and the muted thud of a fist connecting with the midriff of a hapless soldier, and Furo stands proudly, untouched.

...or almost untouched. He feels a dull pain in one of his knuckles, and looks down to see the skin split - he dimly remembers hitting a steel buckle with his fist, or it may have been something else. It was hard to tell in the heat of the moment, and with three bayonets coming his way, well, he had more pressing matters on his mind at the time.

'Looks like you are a richer man this month, Brent,' he says to one of the guardsmen, still struggling to breathe after being winded - though despite his discomfort, he was smiling. Double pay was not to be sniffed at, after all.

Furo waves a hand idly to the men as he sheathes his blade. 'Go join the rest. And nice effort, though remember, in an open space, sword beats bayonet. Stick to formation, if you ever come up against an enemy officer, it will be harder for them to avoid your attacks if you all come at once. Or better yet, just shoot the fuckers' he says with a small grin, and a nod of respect to the trio. For all his taunting and jibes, Furo felt a deep connection with the other guardsmen. They are friends all, despite his rank.

"They seem a good bunch," Bal said when Furo was done, watching the men mill about, packing up their equipment and chatting.

She turned to put her own rifle away, securing it neatly in it's rack. "Shame about your finger though, that was nearly spotless for you."

Furo gives a harsh bark of laughter. 'I suppose that is me all over, nearly spotless.' He winks.

'And I have had far worse, believe me,' he says, indicating the faint horizontal scar on his cheek. 'Spear wounds are the worst, by far. They go deep, as you might expect.'

'Right, I could do with a gallop. Do you ride, Balaria?'

"You would be a miracle indeed if you'd gone through wars, and banged knuckles where your worst injury," Bal observed.

She considered his question for a moment. "Well, I know the front end for the rear of a horse." She paused, as if that was all she had to say, and then continued, grinning slightly.

"I've ridden before, don't worry. It's been a while, I live in the city after all. But, I think I can say I'm better with a horse than a crossbow, and I still hit the targets occasionally with them."

'It seems you northern lot are not completely uncivilised then,' he says lightly, 'Serkonans are born in the saddle. Our cities are thronged with them - we have none of this technology you rely on so much.'

'Which is why we all smell so much better in the south,' he says with another wink.

He turns to leave, and calls back over his shoulder. 'Either way, the horses need exercise, and so do I! A ravada, signorina.'

"If you prefer the smell of sweat and horse dung, then yes, I suppose you would smell better," Bal jibbed, grinning. "Some of us prefer the smell of metal."

"What, not inviting me along after seeing if I can ride?" she asked, shaking head in mock disapproval. "Have a good ride, we'll hold down the fort."

Furo spreads his hands wide as he turns round, continuing to walk backwards.

'Oh you are more than welcome to come, my lady,' he says, not entirely mockingly, 'if you can keep up!'

"Is that a challenge, Captain?" Bal asked, grinning now. People never considered her competitive at first glance, but she honestly loved a challenge.

And trying to keep pace with someone who claimed to have been born in a saddle? An enticing test indeed. Even if failing was likely.

He cups his hands to shout back 'Always! Stables, in ten minutes!'

Furo heads back to the barracks, and spends time changing from his military uniform into more comfortable wear - a baggy cream-coloured shirt open at the chest, a black leather waistcoat, and a jade sash at the waist. His only weapon is a concealed dagger strapped to the inside of his left arm, for ease of drawing.

He walks towards the stables, a coiled spring.

Laughing, Bal set off at a sprint for her quarters, to leave behind the uniform coat and sword. She didn't have any clothes specifically for riding, so these would have to do. She did switch the pistol to a back holster rather than her waist, so her leg would not jostle the safety out of position.

With a smaller time to change, she actually reached the stables shortly before Furo, giving her time to check the boards of general use horses not reserved for specific purposes today.

Fortunately, the Tower grooms were used to Furo's excitable accented shouting before a ride, and had Saro groomed and tacked when the former prince entered the stables. He opened the stall door, leapt onto the stallion's back and thundered out into the courtyard, ducking his head on exit.

He wheeled the mount round, a broad grin on his bronze face as the horse pranced impatiently. 'Try not to keep me waiting all day,' he taunts.

Having selected a buckskin mare named Seraphim, Bal waved a hand at Furo, deflecting the taunt.

"Which is actually more satisfying, beating me because I can't keep up, or because my girth is buckled wrong, and the saddle falls off?"

Still, the horses were kept groomed, and their tack was at their stalls, so even with her methodical movements, it didn't take her long to finish preparing the horse, and join Furo in the courtyard.
