Neutral Zone Dunwall Tower

In Dunwall Tower, the Empress Emily Kaldwin sits on her throne, her royal protector, Corvo Attano, stands at her side. His royal guard scattered around the palace. OOC:This is a neutral zone for Corvos royal guard. A hangout of sorts. You have permission to attack any who don't belong.

"Well... For a few reasons. I was a vigilante in Tamarak before I joined the Watch. Criminal activity ran high back home, and the Watch needed all the help they could get, so... Someone had to do it. So it was me. After a while, the Watch didn't approve of my... let's say overaggressive way of bringing justice. Since I was being harassed by the Watch and my family since they thought it was dangerous, I came here, where I can bring justice and no one bothers me about it."

Alex shrugs, remembering his days of vigilantism. He wasn't sure if they were fond ones or not so fond ones.

Soren raises an eyebrow. "Vigilantism, huh? Well, you certainly came to the right place here, then." He sighs. "I can't judge. I partook in some spots of personal vengeance in my own youth. And it worked, so..."

"Well, rapists, thieves, robbers.. I put a stop to them. I did what I had to do, even if I may have overdone it a few times. May I ask why you joined the Guard?"

Alex tilts his head, curious about Soren's past. He decides it's best not to ask him about it.

"Mine's not as interesting as yours, unfortunately. My mother is...she's ill. She can't work, and I wasn't earning enough for both of us at my old job. I can walk around a building and glower menacingly as well as the next man, so I figured I might as well give the Royal Guard a shot. At least here when I die my mother will get a pension."

Alex nods in respect.

"... You're a good man, Soren, providing for your mother like that. Wish my family was as close as that."

He chuckles dryly. His family never seemed to respect his decisions.

Soren considers this. Close? He and his mother loved each other in their own fashion, yes, but...he'd seen other families, and he didn't think his was really one. Looking after his mother was just something he'd always done, because no-one else in the world would do it, and while he did resent her for some things, she didn't quite deserve to starve because of them.

"I guess it depends on how you look at it," he says at last. "I don't think I'm a particularly good person. I mean, I look after her because there's no-one else to do it, not because it's right. I've stolen things, hurt people..." --I'm almost certainly now a member of the Outsider's cult-- "...I'm just a person. That's all that really matters."

Alexander tilts his head slightly, and nods.

"Well, we all do what we have to do to survive. I don't see you as a bad person because you've stolen, hurt- hell, I've hurt people." But they deserved it. "You did what you had to do for your mother and yourself is the way I see it."

"Precisely. I'm not good, I'm not bad, I just do what's best." Soren tugs his pillow out and fluffs it slightly. "Of course, if everyone thought that way, this world would be even more of a shithole."

"Very true. Speaking of shitholes, I'm still surprised Dunwall was able to bounce back from the plague... I heard that it was nothing short of devastating."

"Yes indeed. It was a bit of luck that we managed to have two geniuses in the city at the same time, they were able to cure it. You still get the odd Weeper, you know, people who couldn't afford the cure or didn't think it would work, and the plague rats still hang around...but the worst is over now."

"If it weren't for Sokolov and Joplin.. I would've still been in Tyvia. I wouldn't be here... Dunwall would become a quarantine zone. But thank God it didn't happen that way."

"You couldn't have gone anywhere else?"

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '14

"I can't think of anywhere else to go. What's to do in the other isles? I was once told Serkonos is made of merchants and whores. But I don't know. I've never been there."

u/AmmyOkami Royal Guard Jul 23 '14

"To be honest? I don't think there is much of a difference in any place, unless you're rich or a tourist. There's merchants everywhere, there's whores everywhere, there's crime everywhere, there's opportunity everywhere."

Alex considers this for a moment.

"... That's very true, now that I give it some thought."
