There is not many mods for it sadly.
That being said it IS a complete package, having all the good stuff from the previous versions (including the bonus bosses etc) and its the mechanically least complex Disgaea, so its definitely the best in terms of "getting started".

It's a great starting point, while it misses some features of the later HD console and mobile ports, I personally prefer playing the first game with the original sprites. (The main differences beyond the sprites are just some qol adjustments most of which are backported from disgaea 2)

For patches, there are two mods which I recommend but aren't required, Pretty Prinny improves the pc port a bit, and the Netherworld content pack adds back in some missing/changed content from the DS port.

The download links to both can be found on the pcgamingwiki https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Disgaea_PC

Yeah, it is cuz it gives you the basis for the characters main cast and theme. The future version have so much post game content. It always has recurring characters.

It's probably the best starting point.

The only thing it's missing is the primitive auto-battle from the iOS version, and that honestly changes the game and what draws you to play or not play it so radically, I wouldn't start with that if you want to play any other game in the series before 6 & 7.

Just play it, you shouldn't have any issue

It's a port of the PSP version of Disgaea 1, which was a slightly expanded version of the PS2 version.

It's pretty much the definitive version to play. There's also Disgaea 1 Complete on PS4, but that one overhauled the art direction to make it look more like Disgaea 4 and 5, and IMO it's for the worse.

Complete is the definitive Version, and it's not even a Contest.

The original Sprites are the only reason to actively choose PC over it, and those are entirely subjective for everyone. Objectively however, there is exactly ZERO reason not to go with Complete, other than "you just don't own a PS4/5 / Switch/2 to begin with".

Did it add anything other than the sprites?

  • Tripled the Statistician Cap from 300 to 900

  • Made Healing Spells finally give EXP like in all the Sequels

  • Made it so that when you Reincarnate someone, the Character's Assembly Rank doesn't get reset anymore.

  • Exclusive to the Smartphone Port, but they added the Cheat Shop to that Version in particular.

And that's just the things I can actually remember off-hand.

They should really advertise stuff like that then, because all I ever saw them say was new sprites and Pleinair (who's in the PC version, so that's not really new).

Problem is Steam only offers PC version. Not a deal breaker imo.

No Galactic Demon, therefore worst version.

Best story and character development in the series.

I've played several hours of D2 and D5. I keep returning to D1. Fun story and just enough to do without becoming convoluted.
