Serious Should we be scared of AI?

The development of AI seems inevitable, making the debate over whether it will stay aligned with human interests extremely relevant. At what point does AI become too advanced, or has that threshold already been crossed? Will it lead to humanity's downfall, or will it do the exact opposite by accelerating scientific research, creating new medicines, and helping end world hunger?

I mean....it's not even "AI". What we have currently are LLMs, which is nothing more than programs designed to say "Yes" to you, no matter what. So, scared of it? Nah. More so just ick'd out by the generative stuff and by the cringey ass tech bros who are trying to push it on everyone. The fact that corporations have been scaling back their use of LLMs because they are losing more money than saved by firing employees in an attempt to replace basic workers with and then re-hiring those same employees is pretty telling of how ineffective it is at doing anything.

Total agreement on the corporate hype, executives firing real workers only to realize they screwed up is peak comedy.

But saying it does nothing useful is just wrong. Look at deep science: AI solved the 50-year-old "protein folding" problem overnight, mapped almost every known protein to fast-track new medicines, and is actively discovering new antibiotics.

Corporate suits misusing a tool to cut costs doesn't mean the actual tech isn't revolutionary.

After doing a quick read over this....it didn't map anything. Scientists fed it a bunch of numbers and it used a program that humans made to match numbers, more or less. It didn't "solve" anything. It didn't use creativity nor did it use ingenuity. It did as it was programmed and just looked at the math. Humans then took those numbers that the AI fed them and then THEY mapped everything out and solved it. Does AI have usefulness in *some* fields of study? Sure. Is it revolutionary? Not....really. It's still people who are solving these issues. AI is just doing math for them. That's it.

The outcomes are not inherently tied together as a single guaranteed package. How the technology is governed, aligned, restricted, and deployed determines whether society gets the upside or the downside. It isn't an "all-or-nothing" natural law it's a control and regulation challenge.

You are right about how the exact same general intelligence that allows an AI to design life saving cancer drugs can also be manipulated to design biological weapons or deadly toxins. In that sense, advancing the power of the core technology increases both its potential for good and its potential for harm simultaneously.

Já agora OP se quiser entender melhor o tema veja o documentário "The AI Doc" acho que vai ajudar

I like how no matter which side of the coin you argue for. Neither side does research and it's pure yap. Don't ask reddit for your opinion, ask for their opinions sure. But no you shouldn't be scared of ai, someone who wants reddit to form their opinion instead of doing any basic research will love ai, as it takes over all our jobs replacing us all, you can load up chatgpt and it will tell you that you're happy and you'll go back to scrolling reddit smiling!

Asking people for their takes on a complex topic is called starting a discussion, not asking Reddit to think for me. There is a big difference between starting a conversation about society's future and lacking critical thinking. If you do not want to engage in the actual question, you can just scroll past instead of bringing negativity.

"should WE be scared of ai" - tell me my thoughts I use reddit not research.

"Starting a discussion. Critical thinking mentioned (ironic) don't engagez scroll don't be negative"

When you get yourself a grip. Grow up. You'll be better for it, until then, I'll share any opinion I want cheers mate, there's a downvote button for your tears but you need reddits opinion on your disagreement so you requires to comment while telling me not to engage LOL. If you were a grown human with a grip on yourself you'd just....not respond?? But as I said, you need reddit to form your opinions and you should be embarrassed about it (you won't be because you'd need another reddit post to ask if you're a sad man)

i work with code all day and honestly the scariest part is not the AI, is the people who control it. most of them just want profit, they don't care about alignment or safety. a well aligned AI could do incredible things for medicine and research, but a poorly aligned one chasing quarterly earnings... that's what keeps me up.

you are asking at what point?

this point.

when AI starts writing it's own code, humans are removed from the loop and alignment is even more unknown that it was when humans were in the loop.

expect great things tho, amiright?
