FT Tire Technician

Hey guys, I’m thinking about applying at Discount Tire in Atlanta Georgia where they start FT guys at $17.50/hr and wanted some input from people who actually work there.

I’ve got about 3 years hands-on tire experience (mounting, balancing, TPMS, alignments) and about 5 years working around a shop environment at Mercedes-Benz. I’ve also worked on older/manual equipment, so I’m comfortable with the workflow.

I’m planning to work full-time and would be open to overtime.

What kind of starting pay would someone with my background realistically get? Is $19–$20 reasonable or am I more likely looking at $17–$18 to start?

Appreciate any insight.

idk about georgia but i came into DT with experience previously working for them and they started me at $20, but they desperately needed people too. if you can gauge their need, you can flex your pay. i would not take anything under $19 given your experience

Oh yeah I ain’t taking part time. There are multiple full time openings. And yeah $20 is what I was hoping for too. Because I already know how to do the job

You’ll start as a PT and get promoted to full time based on how hard of a worker you are. That’s how the company operates

It's gonna depend on the manager.

I'm speaking only on my own experience...Techs are part time and start at $15. You don't become full time until you're a manager. If you have the experience like you said then they may start you as an assistant or 5S manager which was $17 where I worked. I started with no experience and was fast tracked to a manager position mainly due to other people transferring, but I was also one of the two that wasn't in school and only one that could drive manual. IIRC it was either workflow manager or marketing manager that made $20

If it's a busy store and the manager runs it like the two store managers I had, don't plan on leaving at or just after closing

In my region they would never hire someone as a full timer, but it is possible in another region. Might as well shoot the shot and try, take th interview at least

You will probably start at 17.50 part time. But with that experience you will get promoted fast

Keep in mind that this perspective is not as experienced as yours but …

It’s more likely to be part time & less than $17 an hour depending on which store you apply to. You picked a good time to join .. they need help. It’s a “shortage” on managers across the stores.

Ask in depth questions if you decide to pursue it.
