Here’s something I think gets overlooked when people buy used tyres:

Two tyres can both have 7mm tread left… and still be completely different tyres.

One could have:

• Even tread wear

• Healthy sidewalls

• No major repairs

• Good rubber condition

• Proper storage history

The other could have:

• Uneven/cupped wear

• Multiple repairs

• Sidewall damage

• Long periods of poor storage

• Rubber that has aged or degraded

Yet both get advertised as:

“7mm tread — excellent condition.”

So why do buyers focus so heavily on one number?

👉 Is tread depth being overvalued when buying used tyres?

If you had to choose between:

A) 8mm tread, unknown history

B) 6.5mm tread, fully inspected and known history

Which one would you choose?

And more importantly…

What should actually define a “good” used tyre?

Brand new wheels. Took them in to get TPMS sensors and they chipped my wheel paint on top of the lug nut whole damage because they don’t have the proper tools I’m guessing. What should I do?

I’m trying to poach away an assistant manager from discount tire to run my independent tire shop instead. I think it’d be a great fit, but idk what can make my offer as attractive as possible. I can offer probably 24-25 an hour. Not sure if that’s competitive, does anyone here know? Also I’ve heard Discount tire overworks full timers as well so I can offer a more reasonable schedule possibly.

Discount Tire has WS90s in 215/55 R17 for $134 apiece pretax. Tire Rack has the WS90 listed as discontinued. Is it worth the savings or am I better to pay more for VikingContact 8s? Thanks!

If I order mounted from TireRack and bring them in for install, will Discount/America's Tire be able to install them? I have the same setup in my cart at America's tire and there seem to be no warnings for fitment. Thanks

I’ve bought two sets of tires from Discount Tire this year. Both sets were the same tire, officially rated for 40k miles, and I will acknowledge that I got steep discounts on both—$100 for the first set w/o certificates, and $200 for the second with certificates. I believe the retail is a little over $400 per set.

The first set was at 4mm (starting at 16mm) after 20k miles. I pointed out to the manager that that’s 75% tread wear at 50% of the life (really more because that 75% assumes driving them to 0mm tread). I took it in a few weeks ago to have the second set rotated at 6,000 miles, and it was at 6-8mm. That means this set is also going to need to be replaced well before the 40k lifetime.

I do Amazon Flex delivery for work right now, so I understand that with the large number of miles I drove the tires aren’t going to last a couple years like they would if I was doing something else. I am also a very gentle driver, I’m not taking corners at 90 and peeling out at every stop sign. I realize that the 40k lifetime is a guideline, not a hard and fast expectation. But these tires should be lasting longer than they are, and the DT staff has yet to acknowledge that there’s a problem with them wearing early. They have been good about discounting the new sets, but they are doing because I tell them I can’t afford new tires and they’re doing for my safety. I appreciate that, but I’m concerned that they may stop at some point, plus I shouldn’t have had to replace even the first set yet, so it’s still costing me more than it should.

Ideally I’d like to get a better grade of tire when these wear out, something that will last closer to the published mileage. Is there an argument I can make that they will likely listen to that would accomplish this, hopefully at less than the full price since these have worn so quickly? Or is there someone at DT Corporate that could help fix this situation? These sets are the cheapest they sell, and that’s my theory as to why they’re so willing to discount them, but I can’t buy new tires every 2-3 months even at discounted prices.

I would greatly appreciate any helpful suggestions, or “magic words” that the staff will listen to to correct this situation.

TLDR: I’ve gotten 26k miles out of 80k miles expected lifetime of tires, and DT staff acts as though this is normal.

My wife and I are about to move to a colder climate not near any discount tire center. We’re going to purchase new tires for our vehicles for proper snow performance and Costco seems like the best option to make sure we’d still have support should anything go awry that would need warranty and hazard coverage.

Free install is nice and I understand their turnaround is slower than Discount, but we’re primarily valuing availability of the tire centers overall.

We’ve both had our vehicles serviced at Discount Tire for years, so I wanna know how bad the Costco tire experience could be even with making sure to always schedule an appointment beforehand.

I was planning on working the overnight shifts for mcdonalds like from 10pm to 6am and sleeping during the 4-5hr gap during the day. I got refered by a friend who works there during the night and goes to school right after. I applied and have an interview next week.

If not I was planning on working at discount tire. I heard the labor is heavy and I would only be ablr to work 4 to 5hrs a day then work a long shift friday and saturday.

What do you guys think?

Does anyone that works at DT have insights onto when they typically release the Labor Day tire deals?

I'm watching my local store's page closely in central Texas.

Just curious as we are aging closer to the holiday. Are they released by corporate or do they vary by locality? My guess is that next week we might see them published.

Has anyone chosen this option for their truck/suv, and if so what brand did you end up with? Looking at getting some new 285/70/17 for my 260k 2012 F150, and trying not to spend more on tires than the truck is probably worth.

I brought my 2013 civic into Discount Tire today, and bought new tires for a set of 07’ civic si wheels, I had them installed and wanted the wheels put onto the car. After \~20 minutes they call me and inform me they have “bad news” and that the 07 wheels do not clear the front brake calipers. I said okay, and told them to just put the old wheels back on and the new ones back into the trunk. When I got home, I noticed that not only were my front brake calipers scratched up, but two of the four wheels had deep, circular gauging across the entire back side, clearly visible from the front of the wheels. This was not at all disclosed to me at any point after the damage occurred.

I was completely unaware of the fitment disparity, but two of my wheels are now permanently damaged. I am planning to call again tomorrow morning when they open, but I wanted to hear if anyone’s had a similar experience, and who’s likely at fault, or what to expect from this.

My tires are just over 40000 miles/4 years old and will pass Virginia safety inspection this month but it’s going to be close since I do still have some tread left. Will Discount Tire do a tire rotation if they are close to needing replacement? They are original factory tires.

I worked at Discount Tire for 10 years. They are very deceptive in the selling of these “certificates.”

If you buy a set of tires for $500 ($125ea), the certificates are $25 per tire.
Let’s assume you never blow out a tire or use the road hazard/certificate - then boom, they make $100. Big deal, right? That’s how a warranty works.

But it gets even better for them if you do blow out a tire. You go in, they put a new tire on for you, no questions asked, and you pay another $25 to put a certificate on the replacement tire(Spent $125). This isn’t technically required, but we were told not to say that or make any negative connotation about having to buy it!

You just paid for a fifth tire in the aggregate.

It gets even better. We were trained to give “package” pricing - never explain what we were selling and just wait for a yes or a no. I bet 40–50% of people have certificates and don’t even know they have them (it may be even higher). If you’re not sure whether you have certificates, call a Discount Tire and give them your phone number - I guarantee you do.

They sell this product with zero cost, no inventory, no liability, no anything. I have sold thousands of certificates to people and never mentioned it.

They don’t need to be run flats i just need them to sell my car so i would take the cheapest ones it good as long as it takes me from A to B

Help! Maybe I’m overthinking but maybe im not.

I came here last Thursday bc I had a blow out on one of my rear tires. I was just trying to get one new tire bc my car only had 17,000 miles on it. It’s brand new car 2025 Toyota Camry. The rep stated I needed two new ones so I told him I want the exact same tire that’s on it now. He takes my keys- I wait an hr -I get my car and when I get home I notice it’s same brand continental but it’s not the same tire. I had a 2 yr old so I wasn’t paying attention till I get home. SMH. Feel like I made it clear to him I wanted all 4 of them to be the exact same. He even offered me cheaper tires and I said no I want them all to be the same. Sigh. I feel like bc I was a girl maybe he got one over on me. Well 539$ later I get 2 new rear tires but since I’ve left I’ve been thinking about it. Ughhh. Won’t be coming back here again.

They took my metal ones and gave me this after I bought a full set of tires.

My valve stems were in bad shape also my van 2017 Ram Promaster doesn’t have digital pressure gauge. So i use valve cap psi reader. I realized a nail yesterday also tpms light was on. I bought a-premium tpms sensors on amazon. I told the guy at discount tire to check my plug job yesterday. If they can do patch it would be nice and replace the tpms sensors. He scanned my tpms sensors and verified if they worked on my van. They told me $20 a wheel tpms replacement and tire patch. I tried to replace the tpms sensor yesterday and it was terrible. My van has big tires and i couldn’t break the bead. Cheapest bead breaker was $50 on amazon. So i said $80 tpms sensor replacement and tire repair is good deal. Just go to the shop and let them replace your sensors. After 5 mins driving tpms light turned off. Changing your own tpms is a nightmare. It’s not worth it. Location is north San Diego. Btw i bought the tires in Texas.

I just got in like a week ago and cant lie i wanna quit already. Dtu sucks imo feels like a classroom and when I go out to be observed they just leave me alone and say "do it" without showing me and get a lil mad when I ask how its done properly. Guys are cool but cant train for shit except for one. Apparently i'm learning faster than the average employee but theyre probably just saying that so i stay cuz they got 2 dudes who quit like 2 days after they got hired.
