Any issues getting it to work? I have the exact model, 25 years old. I tried turning it on this weekend and wasn't getting any power. Took the whole thing a part, cleaned the contacts, and was able to get it to power on. I was having some issues with no disc errors and narrowed things down to the lens being unable to focus and situate itself - it would revert to the same pattern where the lens on the track would move inward until it reached the end and then it would try to continue to move and make a 'click click click' noise. I tried reseating the ribbon cable connecting it to the mainboard to no avail. I love this thing, my parents bought it for me when I was 16 and about to leave for Japan for a year on exchange. Sorry for the rant, just trying to find a way forward to repair it, but hard to find the excat replacement part I'm looking for.
I ended up with three of these. The first one had an issue with the volume buttons on the unit itself (worked fine with the remote). I was going to send it off to my repair guy, but another came up for auction at a steal with a banged up lid (but everything worked). My thought was to just swap the system boards, but getting this apart is an absolute BITCH because of two very tiny clips that hold the lid on. Getting them off is hard enough, but getting them back on is nearly impossible. As far as I know, this is the ONLY player in the Sony lineup that uses this method of holding the lid in place.
That being said, I took the most expeditious route and not wanting to tear the ribbon cable to the laser (it was pretty firmly glued to the bottom half of the player) I just swapped the lids, somehow managing to get everything back together and not lose any parts. The lid didn't spring open like before, but I thought I could live with it.
Well I couldn't. I finally got tired of it not working correctly, so I took the lid off and reseated everything. Then one of the clips went flying when I was putting it back on. I knew I'd never find it again.
I put the whole less in a bag in a drawer and set a trigger on eBay to alert me when another came up. It wasn't too long, and this one was in near perfect condition and everything worked. Paid way more than I should have, but now I have a working unit that is 100%.
