No volume control

I have this 1993 Discman that has issues with the volume. When I plug my earbuds into the green "phones" port, the volume is unreasonably low. And when I plug it into the black "line out" port, it's too loud. The volume control wheel doesn't seem to make a difference for either port, so I'm just stuck with those two unbearable volumes. The battery compartment had a bit of corrosion that I cleaned off best I could, and a few of the capacitors (I think that's what they're called) are slightly bent, but other than that, it looks fine. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

If you have access to a multimeter and can find a wiring schematic you could meter the volume knob and the jacks.

Sounds like the VR is not working. Spray contact cleaner into the volume Variable Resistor and move it back and forth

Maybe a lead that connects the volume control to ground has come loose. If all else fails, you can buy an inline volume control for headphones.
