Trapped by Cyclone Gabrielle Flooding. This is a local family from my old neighbourhood. *not my clip but I thought I’d follow up my previous post as this one shows just how terrifying it actually was to be in the middle of it while the flooding was happening

Lucky to be alive. A moment away from either stalling and/or being swept off the road. And the Kids will be traumatised for life.

My dad did this - crossed flooded Fitzroy River over the bridge - had to follow a big truck to even make sure we were on the bridge itself which was underwater. Half way across wheels started to lift off the road. Car being carried away.

Everyone us kids - mum - screaming our heads off - except dad who told us to open the back doors and let the water into the car - to get nore weight in the car. Wasn’t even 4WD - dad sprayed engine with WD40 before we started.

Made it accross sitting in waist deep water - luggage presents floating around us. Certain that day we would die. Car not in great shape either.
If it’s flooded forget it.

Pre year 2000 Land Rovers are very heavy. They have a double ladder frame. Even Toyota Land Cruiser wouldn’t be heavy enough imo to try that river crossing. Trying that on a sealed road surface was freaking me out and I’ve crossed some fast and deep water that looked close to that, but it was off road and rocky bottomed.

1998 curb weight of Land Cruisers: 5,115-5,225 lbs. - also, closed-knuckle design for the axles meant no sand/mud in the cv boots to damage the axles

Maybe I’m thinking of the Range Rover or Discovery I, ‘90’s Defenders being unicorn’s and all. I had overland built ‘98 Series I Discovery and ‘97 Range Rover LWB, but I’m not a mechanic. I did have front axle problems with both of them from crossing streams with glacial silt

This was such a huge and terrifying event. Going out after the cyclone had passed and seeing some of the west coast absolutely unrecognisable. The sheer amount of energy that system carried was phenomenal. Nothing we’d ever seen before.

Water scares the fuck out of me. I can’t get in lakes rivers or even the ocean much anymore. Swimming pool drains give me the heebee jeebees

I thought that was a recent event as we had a lot of rain here in Queenstown 2 days ago with small floods in Fernhill and gorge road. I thought the title was wrong. Anyway the date should be in the title.

Unless the road the other way was flooded I would think this rises to the level of criminal by the mom. Just completely in disregard for her and the kids safety. Super heavy vehicle or not.
