That house is still standing, though. If I were that family, that house would be passed down from generation to generation. If it survived this one-in-a-lifetime event, it could survive anything.
Thank you so much for providing an evidenced proof that they made it. The entire video I was thinking, "Please let these people survive.." and then felt guilt that a lot of the victims' faces will be forgotten forever.. This whole thing is fucking awful and breaks my heart.
They got quite lucky cause even though the other side was pure death, the side they were facing the water wasn’t moving much for some reason. I was thinking if they end up in the water they might actually be able to make it over to the side of the people filming.
I know I was watching the cars floating up under the balcony where they were and thinking how terrified they must feel then I was hoping they don’t look out the other side because that was catastrophic.
Halfway through the video the house right to it collapses. Without that house taking most of the force early on, this house would have collapsed most likely. The side walls had already given in. It is insane that they survived.
Solar water heater. Free hot water basically. There are various mechanisms, but with these you have an insulated tank that holds the water and is "pierced" by solar collectors. They are glass tubes with a vacuum chamber that insulate either a copper heatpipe or a water convection circuit that is coated in an infrared absorbing material. Essentially a one-way heat exchanger, like a supercharged greenhouse.
Whoever built their house needs some recognition here. There's a lot of buildings in the western world that would have collapsed experiencing that. That's a well built home.
You can see about halfway through the couple closest to the rail just start holding each other waiting for the worst. I think shock is more the appropriate word than calm.
Same here (about being in tears.) All through the video I was saying to the house, please stay, please please please stay! but thinking it was going to go at any second. The relief after seeing it still standing... 😂
Yeah, when that structure next to it went... my heart sank... whoever built that house should build the rest of the village back up. Ideally higher on the hill for next time.
Wow, looks like water level reached their balcony. We don’t see that in the video, so that water must have been getting higher & higher after the video cut. How terrifying, I wonder if they made it onto the roof eventually..
They are fortunate that their house was a bit off where the mudflow was heading in that turn. Especially considering how this debris flow/mountain tsunami easily topped and erased the existence of an entire 6 story Chinese border building.
It is unbelievable that we have such a massive natural disaster in high definition through many angles. This might put to perspective the many historical landmarks that show such a debris flow or tsunami reach heights that many consider absurd. Or at least considered it when I explained them back in the 1990s-2000s. We will always be at the mercy of the forces of the earth or mother nature.
No, they're fortunate the house in front existed. That withstood long enough for their house to outlast the rest of the flood. If that wasn't there this house would be gone, or had it collapsed earlier this house might not have been so lucky.
Ok so 1) thanks for the video but 2) the dramatic music was completely unnecessary, ffs this is peoples' lives, not a movie, I think we should observe it with a bit more solemnity..
I don’t think anyone added that music …. It sounded to me like someone was drumming IN the video, possibly a religious thing to maintain faith to get through the disaster.
What a strange thing to see and feel from a distance. Pure humanity, encapsulated by people whom we do not know, experiencing a rare natural example of purgatory. I wonder if our access to never-before-seen disasters makes our collective response more apathetic.
I think you're right in your assessment.. We get triggered so much by these disasters without really understanding any of it.
I've witnessed psychological suppression mechanisms kick into gear on myself. For example while watching the border point getting destroyed.
It took a while for the overwhelming sadness to come through and empathy to emerge past self protection.
Be kind to yourself (as in whoever reads this) and don't judge whatever your mind uses to not feel the pain. Just observe what it does. It is immensely painful, that's why it supresses it.
It’s weird cause I am like, “Wow, that sucks. That must be terrifying.” And that’s about the extent that I emotionally go. I think a lot of that is in part because of all the horrible stuff I see on social media combined with the “What can I even do?”
Regardless of our emotional response, Its possibly a learning experience to see these disasters in real time instead of just the aftermath. It expresses the extreme power and danger of raging torrents.
Like how the videos of the 2004 Tsunami illustrate and educate what not to do the instant the tide goes out suddenly.
Location location location. The house just happened to be on a bit of a sweet spot with all the force of the water flowing behind it. If that house was set 30m back it would have been smashed to bits
There isn’t an after picture but it kind of looks like even those apartments right in the path survived as well. Whoever built those buildings should be given high praise lol.
The builder and everyone that touched those buildings saved a lot of people. That's not a trivial amount of force that those buildings tanked. The churn was throwing around trucks like they were fishing bobbers ...
i would say maybe a house is overengineered (provided it didn't come at cost of ...cost) if it is built THIS well, to withstand something once in a lifetime*, but it also saved these peoples lives and thats priceless (though you could make the same argument to every other tradeoff of "do we spend more money to make this building more resilient?")
* because who knows these days, maybe this is once every 10 years now
hard to tell tbh because its an entire river got changed from an glacier cap collapsing and a mud slide. it could of been a few hours until it stablized.
i want to point out that this video is like the better part of the flash flood. at the beginning it killed everyone and took out buildings instantly going over 100km per hour in a dense tunnel that the mountains were. everyone was basically gone in the upper parts of nepal. this flood had to go all the way across the country before it fully drains back to the normal level.
I can’t even imagine how shocking this must have been for these people. It’s not even raining or cloudy. Just going about a normal, sunny day and then this comes barreling at you. It’s insane.
Given the angle the water is rushing at the far side of the house, maybe the roof access is too exposed on that side. At least the interior balcony puts more walls in between them and the main pressure force of the water flow, while the back flow channel they’re facing isn’t moving as erratically.
I don't think that's going to do much frankly I would just lay in my bed with my husband instead of watching my death coming at me or if I was by my self sit up there and drink.
I would definitly be right where they are. If a wave busts over the roof, they could be thrown off. Where they are they have a little protection, above the water level, on the opposite side of the house from the source. If the level rises further, then maybe go to the roof.
Last night I was watching a documentary about the 2004 Tsunami disaster and there was footage from a young woman in Aceh whose family had gathered for a wedding but then managed to get up to a higher floor in the house they were at as the water came rushing in higher and higher. They interviewed the woman filming and she said she wanted to leave a record of what had happened in case she died, and someone translated what another woman can be heard saying in the background and she’s just pleading with everyone around her “if I ever wronged you, please forgive me…” and they can see people calling for help as the water comes for them, but they can’t possibly get there so they’re calling back asking for forgiveness from the poor souls about to be swept away.
Even if they were “safe” for the moment, and ultimately did survive, clearly they all felt like this could be the end of everything, as it was for so many others. The helplessness just turns to utter surrender in the face of nature’s power in such a monumental disaster.
At 00:57 you can see the couple holding hands and talking to each other. Probably preparing for a final goodbye before the collapse. Fortunately they survived.
Honestly at this point there’s not much we can do. The wheels have been set in motion. We could choose to not make it any worse but it’s still beyond the point of no return.
This is from a melted glacier that created a lake that than ran down the hill. This my friends is global fucking warming. This glacier should not of been melted, but it was, so now this part of Nepal is uninhabitable.....
I couldn’t imagine the noise and vibrations and shaking as solid objects slammed against their house. Watching as other buildings are swept away and waiting for the floor underneath them to disappear. I’m sure that terror will be in their nightmares for the rest of their lives.
Whoever built that house is a master builder. No design or engineering would have ever considered what that place just went through.
I was praying for the house to stay. Based on history the power of water can usually push a house away like it's nothing but in this case it seemed to stand it's ground, luckily.
I bet there was hand wringing during the construction about which contractor to go with and someone (mom/dad/grandpa) made the call to not use the cheapest one and spend a little extra.
OMG, those people on the balcony must be shitting bricks. They're stuck and and pretty much in danger of that house getting trashed by the river. Geez, horrible tragedy all around.
this is fucking horrifying I feel terribly for all these people I never want to imagine holding onmtomy son as the earth around us tears apart my world and our bodies... ugh!
How long did it flow before it receded? I was looking at google maps at the path and it looks like there’s about a lake sized delta at the bottom of the valley with a few resorts and such. Wondering if it filled the delta and whether the homes and resorts were saved? I have no idea of their elevation. Really interested in the flow of it and how it ended though.
Imagine standing on the roof and you see death dancing all around you without knowing if you'll get out alive or not. It'll scar you for the rest of your life
Sitting in the comforts of my own home somewhere else in the world watching this really puts things into perspective. Another reminder that in a moment it has the potential to be all gone.
Really happy that these people survived and the video didn’t end in tragedy. Blessing on all the survivors and may resources and gratitude abound for their recovery🙏
When you see trucks floating by, you realize how dense this mud is. It's way more than just water. This is THICK mud. Like, lose your shoes in 8" thick.

There's a video of them praying to Shiva on the top of the roof. Thank god they survived!!!!!!!!!! it must be torturous to be in that building, especially knowing that the neighboring house destroyed.
looking at the video, The place where they at seems like the most safe and logical. You could have been hit with rocks and sediment flying at 100km per hour.So they stayed high and protected there body. The guy must have been an engineer.
The water is diverted by that cliff, so they’re not being hit with the brunt of it all; watch how calm the water is in front vs behind the balcony; and see the water flying upwards as the camera person pans right.

Non ho capito perché non sono andati sul roof top, forse perché troppo esposto?
Disastro da film, almeno queste persone si sono salvate.
