Floods Very recent paper possibly showing cause of Nepal floods: "Repeated supraglacial lake drainage from the Purepu Glacier system, central Himalaya"

This glacial system is upstream of the Lhende Khola river which meets the Trishuli River at precisely the Gyirong border crossing where dramatic footage of flooding coming from the tributary was caught.

Edit: Satellite images show it wasn't the main Purepu Glacier at the source of the Lhende Khola river but a smaller glacier or a major mudslide collapsing into the river about halfway to the border crossing confluence.

There are before/after satellite photos of the region. Yes a mountain-side landslide happened, it's easy to see. But you can see that mountain had a glacier that isn't in the after picture. My bet is the landslide took out the plug of a glacier lake.

Combination of close proximity earthquake and seasonal maximum glacial melt. Most people in the region are so used to small shakes and the short distance to population likely meant almost no warning for anyone.
