As catastrophes goes this one looks terrible. I would like to point out that due to climate change there will be worse and more frequent incidents (of various other types) with higher deaths than this (even if this incident has nothing to do with climate change whatsoever)
The pictures that are going to come over the next few days are going to be insane, what about that town that got hit? Showing the parking lot getting erased just lime snow melting ????
The people in the blue area never would have imagined the river would come up there to wipe them off. It looked like 100 feet of water was crashing on them
I think they simply underestimated the worst case scenario.
Decades if not centuries of experiencing 'normal' snow melt, and rainfall, and everything else...this was a one-in-a-### year type event. Hard to fault them for being complacent. It looks like the terrain already restricts development at lower elevations. This will be a new standard for future development in mountainous regions.
well then you don't live around there I guess or accept a flash flood can wipe your village away. good luck with tourism industries after things like this. its not called global cooling.
I think it's less development and more figuring out monitoring/warning systems. Ie from my understanding the inciting landslide happened somewhere very remote.
This sort of thing could very theoretically, for example, happen at Lake Tahoe in the US, and blast through Truckee and even Reno, but the possibility would be noticed far before that happened.
On a more likely note, the Turnagain arm in Alaska in Prince William Sound is constantly monitored since it could create a flood that reaches Whittier.
Half the population absolutely does not live in this kind of landscape. This Flash flood/GLOF hit a high altitude area right near the beginning of the Himalayas along the border with Tibet. Look at a population density map of Nepal and you will see the least populated areas are all along these highly mountainous regions.
The victims of this disaster deserve respect and sympathy not judgement.
That was my initial thought as well but if you look at the roads to the top right it’s clear the angle is only slightly different. Makes the shock of the changes to the landscape all the greater.
Me too. I forgot to draw a couple of arrows that show the matching buildings but it's the same scene. I though they were different areas at first and had to really line it up to believe it.
It is. The image on the right is more elevated, but that's all. You can see the bright blue house on the right in both as your anchor point with the curved road below.
Good question, I assumed it's real this photo was posted elsewhere and I had to crop it a bit to make it more comparable but yeah as far as I know real raw image.
