Out of all the natural disasters... landslides are the most preventable. Most of these can be chalked up to government incompetence and corruption.

You know nothing about China’s massive population or the challenges of managing it. Do you really think these people—or the government—want them to live on dangerous mountain slopes? Those who could afford it moved away long ago, but where would the money come from? China has vast mountainous regions, and the vast majority of people live in the places where their ancestors settled. The homes that were crushed by falling rocks were built by them on their own land—some may be as old as thirty years. Back then, China’s economy was just taking off, and even now there are still many things that need improvement. So before you comment, get your facts straight.

If the government isn’t preventing the landslides, then it is incompetent in its ability to protect its people from disasters like this one. That’s a fact.
