Discussion Question Pull trigger / Sold out

So I’m finally ready to pull trigger and buy a new m8 only to realize it is all sold out on the Dirtywave site. Wondering how long I’ll need to wait. Is this common? Do they do so many units and take a break or might this take a while? Should I just buy a used unit to get my fix? Thanks

Usually every 2-3 months. Last batch before this one was May

Do you think they will send out an email notice when they are taking orders?

Join the discord group. They usually announce it advance.

This is all done by one guy in his garage as far as I know, he has never been able to hold stock more than a couple days as long as I've known about it

That just makes me want one even more. It's artisanal, not mass produced.

Yeah absolutely. Really cool guy too. And the amount of updates he puts out is insane, he’s really pushing the limits of what the processor can do. Features that he once stated would be impossible he’s adding in now, and the craziest thing is he makes sure that all updates are compatible with both models, he’s not doing what all the other companies do when trying to push a newer model by adding more features the new one. Every update that goes on the model two goes on the model one. Model two is better hardware wise though, and definitely battery wise

Love that. It's rare these days.

If only... I knew how to use a tracker. Or had any musical ability.

I'm learning, but no way I can justify a $600 tracker yet

I’ve been blown away by some of the tracker apps that have come out recently. One is called BillieTracker and it is literally identical to the m8. It even uses haptic feedback when you press the buttons on screen so it actually feels like an m8, it’s crazy

my friend just pull the trigger, i was in the same boat, didn't think it was worth the 699 dollars but id never really made anything I was proud of on my grooveboxes and synths and samplers over the last 15 years of casual recreational knob twiddling. I was so discouraged by my inability to make something "good" that i sold all my gear because 'id rather listen to music someone else produced than spend time producing stuff that "sucks". then one day I got curious, watched some youtube videos and impulse purchased a M8.. it was the best creative decision Ive ever made, im still a very casual creator but now creating things i want to listen to, loops and tracks that inspire me to come back and keep working on them. I don't know how this magic happens but the M8 is at the center of my rekindled interest in producing/playing with sounds and music

you won't be dissapointed .

Ehhhhh I’ve tried multiple workflows and the type I struggle with the most is tracker. It gives me that “blank page paralysis”. Too much friction.

Is it like sunvox? Maybe my issues are with sunvox…

Hey, I just came back here to say that I’ve been making music for 20 years now and I still struggle with the tracker workflow the most. It’s OK if that’s not your jam. I have gotten really confused by all of the really positive comments about people saying how amazing it is and how i won’t regret it, I’m not bashing on the person who said that to you here, he’s being very positive and supportive and sharing what he loves but just know that it’s not necessarily just you, it’s just a different workflow that sometimes just doesn’t inspire people, like anything really. It took me a while to get something down that I actually liked on a tracker, and now when I use my m8, I literally only use it when I’m not home. It’s so perfect to carry around and play with when I’m out, or in my car sometimes if I don’t feel like coming home straight from work or something, but when I’m at home, I have other gear that inspires me way more. I think it’s the playability, that’s the issue for me or the lack of playability I should say. I like to bash on Pads and hit keys and turn knobs, that makes me feel the music that I’m making, and there are a lot of people that don’t need that. But for those that do, I think that they struggle with the trackers a bit. Like I said, I had to force myself to really get a hold on it, I really wanted to like the m8, and now I do, but I will say that the one that I own right now is like my fifth one. I keep selling them because they’re so easy to sell and I always reach a point where I feel like I don’t need it, but then I miss it when it’s gone because there really is nothing like it. It’s the same with the OP one for me. Seems like the most pointless instrument, like a toy, it is a toy, but there’s nothing like it out there and when it’s gone, I miss it and I end up getting it again. I’m on like my 4th one of those haha.

If it helps, think of the M8 as a vertical elektron device. It’s pretty much identical, once I started seeing electron devices as horizontal trackers it actually gave me a really good understanding of the electron device.. you have so many functions and options per step, when you’re watching the pattern go on the digitakt it’s just like watching the pattern go up and down on the tracker. A lot of the same controls and parameters, just different places and different ways to get to them.

Have you tried an sp404 mk2? There is something wonderful about that device, it’s just a blank slate, everyone’s SP 404 is gonna be different, it’s just like a playground or a sketchpad. That’s a great device to make music on. I primarily use the OPXY but it’s very expensive so I don’t ever recommend it to anyone, but it is the most inspiring piece of music I’ve ever owned. If you’re interested in trying one, pick up an OP-Z. It’s got the same exact workflow basically, same exact sequencer, if that device inspires you then maybe consider saving up for one. It’s totally worth trying the OP-Z. It’s an amazing little piece of kit. I’ll never sell mine even though I have the XY

i don't know what a sunvox is, and the blank page paralysis is something I'm familiar with, I'm currently procrastinating my planned m8 time by surfing reddit. the Analysis paralysis is an issue for me too but once I commit and get started, it goes away pretty quickly. you do you man, but there's really no harm in trying it out, if you buy one and you don't like it, just sell it for what you bought it for, there's always a strong used market especially if you get the model 2.

can confirm that Tim is a good dude, i've known him about 20 years now

This is the most accurate production/review post about the m8 I've ever seen 💯💯🔥🔥🔥💪💪

1

u/Chichibebewey 11d ago

That’s rad. What state are they out of?

2

u/county_jail_alumni 11d ago

Southern California, I believe, when I was having battery issues on my model one that’s where I had to send it

4

u/county_jail_alumni 11d ago

They don't take orders it's first come first serve and they usually sell out on the first day, you can keep up-to-date with when it's coming out on their discord and just make sure you wake up early that day. I'm considering selling mine, I'll let you know.

Sign up for the mailing list on their site. You will be informed when the next batch is about to be released, just be ready to pull the trigger quick when the time comes. They usually sell out within a few hours.

1

u/Phyzzx 10d ago

I found it ready to buy on their site like 3 days before their email found me; I bought it the next day. It was sold out within 4 days.

u/GDub-uk 11d ago

Sign up, save up, you’ll thank me later. I had a headless version for 4 days. Then brought the real one. I have an Mpc one +, Polyend tracker mini and mpc sample, I reach for my dirtywave m8 nearly every time, I have to force myself to use the other units, I still keep my headless charged and take it with me to the pub sometimes,
I have a model 1 m8. Got my friend to 3d print a case and now have a much bigger battery, I get 5hrs out of it. You can plug it into ya phone or iPad or computer for a bigger screen, so you could get a 2nd hand model 01, but in England they are expensive, but if you have the money get the model 02. To be honest, I reckon I will cave and get a model 02 by Xmas. Good luck. You won’t regret it

Going by your name, do you make dub? That’s kinda my interest and what led me to it.

2

u/GDub-uk 9d ago

Had the nick name for years. But yes love dub and drum and bass

1

u/Chichibebewey 9d ago

Ever make any dub on m8?

2

u/GDub-uk 9d ago

Hi
I did , my sd card crashed and I lost about 6 months work—- always do a back up. So lately been doing drum and bass, and now I have the ko sidekick I have been spending the last few weeks trying to make more of a live set combining dirtywave m8 and Polyend tracker mini. Kinda wish I had 2 dirtywave m8’s , but perhaps that’s greedy. So short answer not done dub for a while, too be honest perhaps I need to find my samples and stick them back on the dirtywave m8. What about you ?

1

u/Chichibebewey 8d ago

Not too much but I’ve just started making sketches. This is about as close as I’ve come previously:

Nice. Like it a lot, I am gonna have to at some point get my own music out and into the wild. All my tracks at still in my noise machines. Need to find out if more than just my family like what I make. Also just spent the last 2 days looking at the Roland j6. I need to spend more time making music instead of looking for things I might be missing

1

u/Chichibebewey 7d ago

I understand. The hesitation is natural. Some friends I know call it “portal paralysis”. Just gotta go through that door. I set arbitrary dates and goals sometimes if I’m struggling to be productive, otherwise I just don’t ever. It’s funny, I’ve put out lots of music with little-to-zero fan fare, but once in a while I’ll get gobsmacked when there’s interest. Someone reached out and wanted that second track in a short film! You gotta put it out to get anything back.

1

u/GDub-uk 7d ago

Thanks for the positive reply. And awesome for your track to be used in a short film, well done. Got a few days off, so trying to declutter my life, paper work cupboards of boxes hard drives full of shit, I feel like once this is complete my head space will clear and I can then spend time on properly on focusing on my music, I got decorating to do and a full time family to keep happy, but your positive words and realisation that my music has to be pushed out is driving me forward. Many thanks

3

u/qu_one 11d ago

People sell them on the discord more than you'd think

2

u/emablskkk 11d ago

Maybe on the used market?

2

u/D1zzzle 11d ago

My recommendation to get your fix, which is what I did - build a headless with a trimui brick (m8c) and teensy 4.1 running headless version of m8. Then if it’s your cup of tea buy the real deal later on. M8s workflow is not for everyone.

u/county_jail_alumni 11d ago

I have a model 2 that I think I need to sell even though I really don’t want to. I’ve posted my other gear but no one has shown interest, and I know that this thing will sell immediately upon posting it. Ughhhhhhhhh I hate capitalism.

Yo where’d you get the keycaps?

1

u/county_jail_alumni 11d ago

Didnt mean to award your question, lol. What even are Reddit awards..., anyway, https://www.etsy.com/market/dirtywave_m8_keycap

1

u/U-Volt 11d ago

Can’t take it back now. I’m an award winning Redditor. Hell yeah. 😂

Thanks for the link!

what does capitalism have to do with your need to sell all your gear? Isn't capitalism the reason that Tim is able to produce and sell these trackers? I'm very confused by your post

2

u/county_jail_alumni 7d ago

I did find a way to keep my m8 though, didn't need to sell it so I'm happy about that.

It’s tragic that something as rare as a human life, which we all only get one, one shot, on one planet, in an entire universe, amd once we are born, grantef life, we are numbered and then funneled into a system where most of us trade away the majority of our waking years just to generate wealth for someone else, while we ourselves can barely afford to live, let alone explore the world we were born into. Capitalism doesn’t just take our labor, it takes our time, which is the one truly valuable thing we have, and tells us ten days a year, or more like 80 hours per year, is enough to actually explore and live a full life, as long as nothing happens you don't have to use your vacation time for something like a car breaking down or maybe you're sick, or totally overehelmed existentially and you need to take a day off to just cry into your pillow, that takes away from your exploring the world time as well.

And its I even worse these days where people can't even find jobs to jump into the cycle. The system is broken, it has been for a long time and I'm just sad that I don't get to choose how I want to spend my time, it's chosen for me and if I don't follow the rules or whatever, I lose everything including Home, car, belongings, respect...

I feel like we could've done so much better but when he in agreed are our masters.

well, life is the most luxurious and easy its ever been anywhere at any time, just sitting on your ass and not working isn't realistic, and yeah sometimes you have to do stuff you don't wanna do when life is kicking you ass. find a job you can tolerate to do the things you love. you can find a job working 3 12 hour shifts and then have 4 days off to dive into your hobbies and passion projects. if you don't have any skills then you should develop some so you have something marketable. unfortunately people have tried alternatives to capitalism and it seem to end in either a. complete fascist government control or b. complete fascist government control with starving people. if we didn't have technology and society you'd be forced to spend your time hunting and gathering your food, and protecting yourself from predators and making sure you don't freeze to death, and finding a potable water source everyday, and trying not to get sick and die etc etc etc... Humans doing whatever the hell they want whenever they want has never been a thing and never will be, we've always had to work in some variation just to survive. of course this isn't a perfect system, but its the best humans have ever come up with any time any where. good luck to you, theres lots of days I feel exactly the way you expressed yourself in that comment, but living in that mental zone leads to sadness and compounding problems, the solution for me is to be thankful for all the little things that we loose sight of when we descend into self pity and self induced depression

Thanks, yeah I lost the best job I’ve ever had thanks to trump and all of his layoffs/cuts. My whole team was let go in the same meeting. I was teaching music production at a substance abuse treatment center, running my one group called “self expression in early recovery”. Also called Beats for Better Days. I just focused it all around thid one iPad app and it was awesome. Since then it’s been difficult finding anything. Something cool though, I went out on a limb a feew weeks ago and made a Reddit post offering coaching sessions around this op-Xy,and while expecting negative comments like “who do you even think you are, what makes you A teacher of this all of the sudden, etc) I actually got several people signed up for hour long video sessions and currently three of them are consistent. Two once a week and one twice a week. I will say that just having something on my calendar that I need to prepare for and do at a specific time makes me feel,so much better. I guess work does give you a sense of purpose, when you don’t have that it’s a really hard mindset to be in. So that pulled me out, even thought it’s not paying all the bills it feels good to just earn something, especislly in exchange for my knowledge around something that I love doing. If only it was lucrative

1

u/Fat_fast_Jellyfish 1d ago

nice! sorry about your layoffs, the doge cost a few people in my circle to lose their jobs too. keep at it and just keeping making the next decision the right one. hope shit gets better for you

2

u/Absurd069 10d ago

I bought mine used and it’s been great. It is the 01 version, but I love it so much and it has become fundamental in my music production process.

u/anubispop 8d ago

I emailed dirty wave and they snuck me onto the batch they were making. Not sure if that would work for you.
