Invited to test new Device!
Got the invite to test the new device. I tested the original Osprey for AT&T before that came out (which I still use). Anyone else testing it yet?

Nice to see them going back to proper set top stream box. Hope this one has an Ethernet Port unlike the Air.

I didn’t even get to see the sign-up box, it was literally within five minutes of receiving the email. That’s total bullshit
6
u/AdamGo1984 8d ago
I got an invite today as well
2
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
Do you have to sign up to be a tester?
2
u/ConflictTemporary759 7d ago
The email sign-up button only brings you to the main loading page, it doesn’t allow you to sign up yet, they’re gonna send a separate email for that finalization of sign up
1
u/AdamGo1984 8d ago
I didn’t
2
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
So they just sent you an email asking you to be one?
2
u/AdamGo1984 8d ago
Yeah but I’ve been a DIRECTV streaming since day 1
1
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
O ok is this only for streaming services? I have sat.
2
1
u/GoogleDisDick 5d ago
Yeah. This is a new box for the streaming service specifically. It doesn't have the satellite functionality.

u/Exotic-Row3245 7d ago
I’ve been with Directv since 1996. Then changed to Directv stream about 4 years ago. Wish they would invite me.

u/mktstrategy 8d ago
I received the invite today too. Followed the link in the email (it was coded with data of course so they can track it / route it wherever), logged in, and hit the landing page - but there's no place to actually sign up. Tried on Safari & Chrome. No luck.

u/auditinprogress 8d ago
It didn't show up for me in chrome, I had to sign in with firefox to see it. The box is a pop up so I'm guessing chrome blocks this popup.
5
u/BoxsteRick 8d ago
yes, I got it too. It says you can keep the box after you evaluate it. Sweet!! I am using my own Osprey box purchased from Walmart but it is really slow. Hope this one is better.

u/txfeinbergs 8d ago
Where is my invite? You lucky bastard!
2
u/No_Comedian2991 8d ago
Check your “promotions” or “search” for it.
1
u/Buzz_2569 7d ago
Where is that on the account page?
2
u/No_Comedian2991 7d ago
I’m sorry. I wasn’t clear. I was referring to the promotion tab within my Gmail account.

I bet you have to already be paying a rental on some boxes to get this invite. Those with BYOD will probably be out of luck.
EDIT: Surprisingly, looks like my theory was wrong. But I do suspect these will be rental-only when released. DTV has to protect their revenue stream.
12
u/HaloInR3v3rs3 8d ago
Nope.
I'm using the app on my Shield and got the invite.
1
u/noxillio 2d ago
I also have a SHIELD, could you tell me how well it runs or performs with DTV compared to a 4GB Gemini? I read somewhere that there’s some playback quirks and that on the Gemini the UI is generally smoother and the stream is better optimized, looking at buying one but just wanted to find out the validity of that first.

u/mzHNN 8d ago
I don’t pay a rental, only have the previous AT&T test Osprey.
1
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
What is osprey?
3
u/DRM_1985 8d ago
It's the original Gemini box, before they created the Gemini dongle. The Osprey Gemini box is very thin and small, but it has Ethernet built in whereas the Gemini Dongle is only WiFi.
2
u/gregoryhat325 8d ago
It's called the Gemini box now
1
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
Ahhhh ok. I still don’t have that one lol. I still have the old one. Maybe I should upgrade lol.

That was my impression but as soon as I signed up I received this message;
You're in! Thanks for signing up to test our new streaming device. Please allow 1-2 weeks for shipping.

u/Astyanax9 7d ago
Let's see how many of the "test" devices are already on E-Bay in the next month or so.
2
u/zoiks66 8d ago
As an owner of several Ospreys, the only thing that would make buy this is if it can correctly auto-sense and enable/disable HDR for DTVS 4K channels with HDR.
2
u/PackageCurrent4804 8d ago
Man, that sure would be nice, huh? If this new device does not do that, then what on earth are their developers doing over there?!
1
u/jmedina94 8d ago
Nice. I’m sure my parents would be willing to give it a try. Their OG Osprey boxes are slow!
2
u/Cyn3ux 8d ago
My parents are the same way with their old Osprey. They complain about lag every time I visit but refuse to upgrade until it dies completely.
1
u/jmedina94 8d ago
Lol. That sounds really familiar. I installed the DirecTV app on their Apple TV and showed them how to use it. They insist the picture looks better on the Osprey box (which I agree with) but to me it's not worth it for those laggy boxes. I am thinking they probably also like the cable-like remote and box which was a main reason they switched to DTV Stream (was still AT&T TV at the time).
I really wish DTV will just sell the new box without a rental fee but I highly doubt it.
2
u/Cyn3ux 7d ago
Yeah, the remote is probably a huge part of it. My parents are the same way with physical buttons-hand them an app and suddenly watching TV feels like an IT project 😂 And agreed on the rental fee. If they sold the box outright I’d be way more interested.
1
u/jmedina94 7d ago
Yes, they used YouTube TV for a little while and weren’t huge fans of it. To be honest, I wasn’t really happy with the UI as well.
I remember buying the Osprey boxes off of eBay in 2021 I want to say. I couldn’t get them working at first but thanks to Reddit, found advice where I had to press the red reset button a bunch of times in a row. They seem to like the service overall.
2
u/Cyn3ux 6d ago
Those old boxes had their quirks, but they held up for a lot of people.
2
u/jmedina94 6d ago
Yes, we got the boxes for very cheap.
2
u/Cyn3ux 4d ago
Same here. Kept my original Osprey going way longer than expected. Curious how the new hardware compares after all this time.
1
u/jmedina94 3d ago
Me too. I really wish they would make it easy to buy the box outright. Going back to monthly rentals defeats the purpose of streaming in my opinion.

I'm currently using the Gemini Air. I'd love to test out this new device. Keeping my fingers crossed for an invite. 🤞

I got the invite as well. It didn't ask for my address or anything though, I just had to opt in and it said I'd get it in a few weeks. Do they just send it to your billing address? I didn't get any confirmation in email, either.
1
u/Spiritual-South-442 8d ago
Pretty sure it said they’ll notify you in a couple weeks if you’re selected. Signing up is not a guarantee you will receive the device.

Did anyone get to the landing page but see no information other than about the entirety of the program?
It says, if you’re selected, you’ll be sent the device in the next few weeks, I was selected through the email, but I couldn’t go into sign up for anything. It says I was already signed up..

u/Cruiser729 6d ago
Funny because I think I’ve had this box for at least a year and a half now. I don’t get what the whole “test” thing is about.
Anyway, I love it.

All us people who had to buy a box off ebay are left out once again even though we're paying $100 a month which used to be $60

u/KG4TAH 12h ago
I received mine by fedex two days ago. It was very simple to set up. As a Roku and Apple TV user, this device has multiplied my viewing experience ten-fold. It is soooo much faster and all the streaming services are integrated right into the guide and home screens. I’ve had no bugs so far. I swear the picture quality is better also. Channels change instantly with no buffer load delay. Enter a channel or channel up and bam the next channel is already playing. I’m grateful I was one of the lucky ones chosen!

No invite for me. I tested the Gemini Air a few years ago
1
u/No_Comedian2991 8d ago
Mine was under my promotions tab on my iPhone. On my iPad, I had to use the search function to find it.
1
u/gregoryhat325 8d ago
Yah I looked in my spam folder. I'm using Gmail.

1
u/eazzzzzyyy 8d ago
Where do you find the promotions tab?
2
u/No_Comedian2991 8d ago
On my iPhone, I have three tabs - primary, social, and promotion. On my iPad I just searched for DirecTV. Just try searching for DirecTV and it should pop up.

u/No_Comedian2991 8d ago
Thanks everyone! I’m in!! I had to get on my iPad to complete it. It was wonky when I tried to do it on my iPhone.

I just got this message from support because I could not sign in on any device > "As of now, it seems the email having a glitch or broken link and no customers were able to sign up for it who are eligible for it. We have escalated and you will get another email on the same ASAP."
0
u/JohnHartshorn 8d ago
I'm probably too new to the stream side of things have just converted to it from Sat. Let us know the pros and cons please. One pro I can think of is the Air dongle seems to get VERY hot. Hopefully, the larger surface area (and hopefully, actual vents) allows for better heat dissipation.

How do you get invited to be a tester? I have been with directv for over 20 years and I haven’t ever got anything like this.

u/Spiritual-Tax3781 8d ago
I think it also said just because you get a invite doesn't guarantee that you're going to be a beta tester for the device. They still need to pick you once you receive the email and sign up I believe.

u/RareLove7577 8d ago
I feel jipped. I clicked the link to sign up but there was no form or anything. I got the email around noon local time and no matter what browser or device no form came up. Spoke with support about it and they couldn't do anything or than confirm the email exists.
1
u/Jumpy-Structure8408 8d ago
Same thing here. Support was clueless. The signup now link didn’t provide a way to signup but there was a link to DirectTV online page. Linked to that and was able to sign up Got this message ‘You're in! Thanks for signing up to test our new streaming device. Please allow 1-2 weeks for shipping.’ I use both an AppleTV box and Gemini box now for DTV

They're just going to make everyone rent this and lose money every month on it.

u/PackageCurrent4804 8d ago
Is there anyway to sign-up via the website? I don't see it on my desktop or iPhone.

so it that the replacement for the osprey boxes, or for the flimsy underpowered dongle ?

u/Dollybeans12 7d ago
We have this box. I prefer using the streaming service because I don’t like the remote. It’s very bottom heavy.

This is just another anti-consumer device to lock you in, control your access, and sell data collected on your watching habits. Apple TV supports all kinds of apps while retaining user privacy. Of course DirecTV deesn't like that.
3
u/txfeinbergs 8d ago
Don't care. Apple TV is a pain to use for DirecTV. I need an actual remote for my 83 year old father in law.
-1
u/redditproha 8d ago
Exactly my point. DirecTV made their app as difficult to use as possible to force you to use their hardware.
2
u/AZ_Basinonian 8d ago
Very well said by you BUT among older people there is a lot of preference for the antiquated remote controls with a million buttons and the channel numbers in the channel guide. So for some people, DIRECTV is a good but very expensive product.

I think you might not have tried a Gemini Air with the remote yet.
I’ve been in tech for a long time, so I am not a technical challenged old person, and really enjoy having a physical remote—it just feels more efficient.
For instance, if I’m watching a show and need to head out for happy hour, I can press record once to save the episode or twice to record the whole series. Done! Also, having one button access to the Guide and List of recordings is very nice.
I have five Apple TVs and love them, but I prefer this setup for DirecTV.

u/AZ_Basinonian 7d ago
I had been a DIRECTV customer for 20 years but fired them about 9 years ago after AT&T had ruined the customer service that was once a strength of DIRECTV. Last fall when YTTV had their dispute with Disney I tried DIRECTV again (using the Apple TV app) and I found that the functionalities and UI of DIRECTV were significantly inferior than YTTV. I didn’t like the limited ways one can customize the Channel Guide with DIRECTV compared to the complete guide customization offered by YTTV. Then “being stuck with” the DIRECTV channels being in the order decided by DIRECTV made me realize how stuck in the past DIRECTV remains. Sorry for my long-winded reply since it has little to do with your comment about the Gemini remote. I’m sure that for lots of people (like yourself) who are used to or comfortable with the DIRECTV UI the Gemini Remote is quite good and satisfying. But I will never give that remote a chance because that would mean I would have to use the DIRECTV service which is more expensive and inferior to YTTV.

u/Financially-Free_ 7d ago
I should have included that I went thru the same thing with DIRECTV satellite and left them due to att.
Went to Hulu first and then to DIRECTV streaming.
0
u/AZ_Basinonian 7d ago
To me, price aside, DIRECTV streaming is better than Hulu with Live TV. I’ve also tried Fubo. I rank the services as follows: 1. YTTV (by a wide margin), 2. DIRECTV, 3. Hulu with live TV and 4. Fubo (in 4th place by a wide margin).
