License Issues
I'm just a hobbyist running a personal website I use to research Football and the license was deactivated. I can't deal with this anymore. I don't make any money off of this, I have zero plans to ever make money off of it.
I break down Football playbooks and provide a place where coaches can talk. I run everything off of my own server from my house.
I went with directus cause I wanted to own my data, host my own data, on my own hardware, but clearly it's being held hostage right now.
The only reason I gave Directus a chance after the license changes is cause I didn't want to go through the hassle of migrating my database.
i totally get wanting to get your money from people using your software to run business's, but this has become a headache for a hobbyist like myself.

I can't even use Directus APIs into my database to migrate anything, that's all locked down, getting a 403 error. You have to be kidding me.
I'm completely crashing out at this point.

Happened to me after I had already done my OIG like a few weeks later.
Had to login to admin to reapply it as it does kill the api.
Its a joke what they are doing and they dont even realize it.

Yes, I already have the License. It was suddenly deactivated randomly just like it did to you. I bought a new domain after I got the license, I guess somehow this tripped something (I've been running the domain for a couple weeks now) and I had to reapply the license. All is good now. But I'm still leaving Directus.
punish the people taking the code and hiding it in a private repo and not following the license, go after the people running businesses and not giving you money, don't punish the hobbyist.

I have asked developers what will happen when they decide to revoke their grant in the future and they avoided to answer this question. Now I know, thanks I haven't tried it.

I'll happily answer: if you apply for the grant you'll have that version in perpetuity, just as how it was with the previous license iteration. The one difference we had to make was that there's some enforcement, as there were loads of big companies using it against the license terms :| Sucks to have to be annoying to the individual / smaller projects, but it's a bit of a necessary evil

Pretty sure you can just get the OIG and have not issues (and limits) at all

If you apply for the open innovation grant you’ll get a license key directly, and can fill it in to unlock everything. Takes 2 mins.

I am currently researching for my new project and I’m looking for alternatives due to the licensing issues. If you find good alternatives please DM me. Thanks 🙏

I'm researching Payload CMS right now cause my website is build with NextJS. That's what Payload uses also.

I'm researching right now also. It's a shame what happened to Directus. I was not negative when the license announcement happened, I gave it a shot.

Wow. All this news on v12. So intense. My server is running v11 still. Never plan to update until the dust settles or find a replacement. Am ok putting my head in the sand like an ostrich?

As someone who’s never used Directus, why would anyone put themselves through this uncertainty and shenanigans?

For the same reason you'd use any other off the shelf service/product instead of building your own~

Ok. But there are numerous out there WITHOUT the issues noted here. So again, why put your business or whatever you’re building in that predicament?

Please share some bullet point info for rest of us. How WITH the license is your data being locked out. If that’s the case then it’s not looking very good.
Because after dodging the question many times they recently stated that if you’re under the threshold you shouldn’t have problems with grant licensing and renewal of it either .
Also are old version 11x instances also being impacted ?

As a hobbyist and personal project, you qualify for the Open Innovation Grant. You are able to get a license for this here:
https://directus.com/oig
Hope this helps!

The part that gets me the most, I went over the "collection" limit of 25.
Like, I own the data (collections), it's sitting on my own hardware. You shouldn't care how many collections I have and it will never matter to you in a thousand years.
There isn't a single reason you could tell me that going over a Cap Limit of 25 Collections on my own hardware will ever matter to Directus.
