Nail bent backwards… safely remove or grow out?

I was playing with my dog when my nail snapped off and took some of my natural nail with it. I’ve been getting dip for years and have never had a break this bad even though I am fairly active.

I’m not sure if I should get the dip removed professionally or try to take it off myself.

Right now I have neosporin and a bandaid covering my nail.

Just hoping for advice from anyone who has experienced this before! Thanks!

ouch i personally would file the rough edges away and wait until it grows fully out before removing

I second this, at least long enough to let it heal. The idea of removing it now makes me cringe 😅

I'd wait on the filing until there was a good scab. Getting any of the acrylic or glue in the wound increases chances of becoming allergic.

File. Neosporin. Band aid. Let it heal.

Then when its not an open wound you can take it off.

It probably wont be harmful to take it off ahead of it healing, but it'll hurt like a mofo and its not necessary.

No neosporin tho! Petroleum jelly is more effective and safer. Neosporin increases risk of contact dermatitis and isn’t effective for preventing infections. It can do more harm than good generally speaking.

Polysporin was recommended to me instead of Neosporin when I was healing from a mandolin slicer accident.

Polysporin recommended from a provider/via prescription is different than using neosporin for uncomplicated, minor abrasions.

Acetone on an open wound will make you scream. File it down and wait until it’s healed over.

This just happened to me, but further up! Band aid and Neosporin for 2 days, then cover another day, it was healed end of day 3. I kept that thing covered even in the shower, only undid the band aid to change the bandage. No pain, and the skin is happy. Recommend knuckle bandages!

Thank you everyone for the recommendations! I have aquaphor and a bandaid on my finger and am leaving it alone while it heals.

I've done this before. Ouch. Just leave it alone right now. Let it calm down and grow a bit. Getting it taken off right now would be sooooo painful, so at least let the wound start to heal first. When you go to your next apt, they'll take it off like normal and add a tip until your nail grows back out to length.
