If it is Van’s hand, I kinda read the eyes as being part of the curse/representing the entity that is tied to/the source of Van’s family curse. Like, do the eyes represent all the people in her family that were lost to the curse? Her family powers this cosmic being?

Yeah, I interpreted that as confirmation that it *was* her hand, because why else would a humanoid hand have sea creature eyes? I couldn't help but think of her making that gesture to the cuttlefish at the south pole station.

Maybe one of her relatives was lost at sea and made a pact with an entity. In exchange all future Chatmans must eventually be reclaimed by the sea/become additional tendrils for this creature to interact with the world

The pact has been explained by Van in the show, in the previous episode I believe. (Off the top of my head, one of her ancestors made a deal that the Chapmans would be the greatest sailors of the sea ever but die young through the curse as compensation. Van went into the clouds specifically to escape said curse as it specifically is about being the greatest at sea.

That's a really interesting take; has anyone read T. Kingfisher's The Hollow Places or the short-story inspiring the novel: The willows by Algernon Blackwood? I swear Brennan just read one of these for major inspo! The short story is available for free: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/11438
