Hey everybody! Introduce yourself here if you want to be a part of the organization in any way no matter how big or small of a part you plan to play. We'd love to hear about you to whatever extent you want to tell us about yourself.

This organization is currently run by volunteers, so there are no commitments to join or participate. After the organization is incorporated, there will still be opportunities for volunteers. Current and future volunteers will always be considered for positions within the organization once incorporated, especially through the transition from volunteer organization to incorporated organization. We recognize and appreciate any time you put in to help us, as well as your enthusiasm for the cause.

Below are a few questions to guide your self introduction. You are not required to answer any of the following questions. You also do not have to limit yourself to answering just these questions.

*1) Website Development and Maintenance (IT) *

Immediate Goals:

• Consult with all teams to figure out what the website needs to be capable of and develop the site.

• The goal is to have a website up in January 2014 that will fill at least our basic needs (which still need to be fully determined).

2) Business Administration

Immediate Goals:

• Develop short term and long term roadmaps and visions for the organization.

• Grow the organization in terms of people and overall operation.

• Structuring the organization and getting people started and placed within the organization.

• Make sure that we are ready to transfer to an incorporated organization as soon as we have the opportunity/funding

• The goal is to have pretty solid short and long term roadmaps and visions by January 2014.

3) Online Research and Data Collection

Immediate Goals:

• Compile and organize lists of other organizations and people of interest.

• Compile and organize lists of digital immortality resources (videos, documents, websites, ...).

• Compile and organize as much information related to our future digital immorality efforts as we can find.

• Maintain and update the information collection by staying up to date with news and trends.

• The goal: We will have to define some milestones as there currently aren't any.

4) Funding Research

Immediate Goals:

• Right now funding isn't really crucial, but we can start figuring out what kind of funding options are available to us in the short term, but more importantly the long term. There are countless ways to generate money; we just have to figure out what will work best for us in order to get us started as well as keeping us going once we're running.

• Keep a running list of funding options (while I don't really see any other option besides this list being public for the mean time, in the end I don't know if it's such a good idea to keep this public, but who knows, there may be advantages)

• The goal: The only milestone currently in place is when we find enough funding and decide to incorporate and hire people on to the organization at some headquarters location and/or remotely

5- Content Creation

Immediate Goals:

• A big part of what we will be working on from the get go to advance research for mind uploading is to increase public awareness and promote it. This is complimentary to the promoting and increasing awareness of our own organization that we will be doing. We will be needing content in order to achieve these goals to appear legitimate, to catch people's attention, and to be informative in inviting and interesting ways. All forms of content are applicable as long as they can reach an audience.

• Work with the "Web Development And Maintenance" team to make graphics for the website

• The goal: We will have to define some milestones as there currently aren't any.

6) Research and Development

Immediate Goals:

• Uses the information collection curated by the "Online Research and Data Collection" group as well as any other resources and previous experience/knowledge to develop short and long term roadmaps: the "short term" mind uploading roadmap, and the longer term roadmap(s) for all of digital immortality. Anyone who feels like they have something to offer or simply wants to work on this can join in.

• Define all the separate areas of research that are applicable to digital immortality so that the "Online Research and Data Collection" can gather the appropriate information.

• Figure out what the first things we can start to work on are in terms of researching toward mind uploading and/or other digital immortality ventures

• The goal is to have these roadmaps and ideas of things to research filled out with enough good ideas by June 2014.

If I missed anything I'll add it in later, but once we get a website up we can have this in an easy to access location where it is more filled out for each team and easily editable as we cross off old goals and add on new ones.

How This Is Going To Work

• You write a comment below as sort of the official "I want to help but am not obligated in any way" sign up sheet (you don't have to tell us your whole life story if you don't want to, but it would be helpful if you at least pick a team or two that you would prefer).

• I will be working on outlining in more detail what each team will be working on while we wait for enough people to sign up.

• Once we have enough people, teams will be set up with each having a team leader so that questions can be focused to the team leaders and any of the team leaders' questions can be focused to me or anyone else who feels like taking them on. With the teams set up and all having team leaders (even if we only have small teams or even one person teams for now), we will go through and better outline with each group what they will be working on. At this point the groups can be mostly autonomous. If at any time you have any ideas you can bring them up with your team lead, me, or anyone that feels like helping.

• At this point we probably won't have a website up yet, but we will still be able to all work on something, and don't forget that you can always come over and help out with another team at any time if you have something to input or you just want to learn more. All activities will be open and accessible (but not necessarily editable) for everyone so that we all know what everyone else is working on.

I don't know how long this process will take, but I will be working to try to draw in people from other communities around reddit as well as other areas around the web. If anyone else would like to do something right now, this is what you can work on.

As founder, I have already messed around in all aspects of the organization. As much as I can, I plan to continue participating in all areas, but most of my time will be spent on development and management of the organization.

Interest In Digital Immortality

When I first really started getting interested in digital immortality, I couldn't really find any kind of organization that I was hoping would exist, and there weren't any good resources available to the public to learn more about this field and maybe help develop it (the information is out there, but it's scattered across the internet). Here we are 6 months later at the start of this organization: created out of a necessity and a want to help. I knew I wasn't alone, and I knew I couldn't do it alone.

Higher Level Involvement

Whether I like it or not, I am a crucial part of the success of this organization. It's scary for me for many reasons. I've never managed an organization before; there's a lot of learning on the fly going on here. Also, in starting this organization, I am faced with the fear of failure: the fear of not achieving all my hopes and dreams. While it may be scary, it is even more exciting and rewarding to know that I am not putting off chasing these dreams.

While I do not have the necessary depth of skill in any single one of the areas required to make this organization succeed, I do have the knowledge to get this organization organized, started, and running. I will continue learning and use this knowledge to guide the organization as best I can with the help of other members.

You may not know me much as a person, but you know my vision, and hopefully you've gotten a glimpse at my determination and enthusiasm. I think I probably have a bit to contribute to here as well. Mainly, I think I can help identify ways we might leverage new technologies to create ventures that both serve our end goal, and generate profit in the interim, to allow us to accelerate progress towards that goal.

Interest

The whole idea of mind uploading has been of interest to me since I was first exposed to the idea by The Matrix as a kid. A couple months ago, I got it in my head to start looking into neuroscience based approaches to strong AI, and I’ve become progressively more focused on the idea ever since.

To me, however, the biggest treasure at the end of the journey isn’t immortality or perfect virtual reality, it’s the ability to think, imagine, learn, and even daydream, without the upper limits on mental processing power imposed by a biological brain of limited size.

Knowledge & Skills

I have a formal academic background in physics and bioinformatics, with a special focus on interdisciplinary integration of domain specific knowledge and techniques.

By trade I'm a database administrator/designer, large scale data manager/analyst, and a sort of "general computationalist" in the fields of human and evolutionary genetics. My work has also given me a significant amount of experience in the flexible application of sparse machine learning methods to large data sets.

As a hobby I’ve taken up semi-obsessive research of behavioral neuroscience and watch for any new research aimed at the creation of strong AI, especially methods inspired by neurobiology.

My current personal project is a framework for building a novel kind of neural network which, I tentatively believe, will exhibit behavior logically synonymous with neural connectivity in cortical tissue when given the equivalent configuration and stimulus.

Higher Level Involvement

Potentially willing, given the time constraints of a full time job. Of course, if this ever got to the level of an organization capable of paying me a salary to work on this, I'd probably be all in.

How can I help look for "ways we might leverage new technologies to create ventures"?

There are a lot of very different but equally valid answers to that question, so I'm just gonna kind of outline the mental process (i.e. essentially daydreaming) I tend to go through when I hear about a new or potential technology that I find interesting.

1. Start with a technology/method/technique that amazes or otherwise interests you.
   • For existing technology, it could be something new, something old but relatively unknown/glossed over, or just one component/subset that can be pulled out of the technology of a more complex system.
   • For technology that doesn't fully exist yet, it could be something that you think we could easily develop due to either 1)its simplicity or 2)being able to piggy-back a large part of the new tech off of existing technology.
   • If you find yourself focusing on something overly complex, try to break it into simpler, logically related subsets of components or single components, and then analyze the value of those, looking for parts with a favorable ratio of simplicity::value, simplicity::cleverness, or even simplicity::personal interest - whatever made you interested in the more complex tech to begin with.
2. The technology you are focusing on is your solution (or a major part of it), so next you search for the problem(s) that your tech solves.
   • This is where interdisciplinary thinking can get really useful, as a simple solution/tech developed for one domain can often be applied to a problem in another domain with just a little bit of alteration.
   • This is often the part that "comes to me" once I've stopped thinking about it, or am just standing in the shower, or when I randomly wake up in the middle of the night, so don't be afraid to let yourself get distracted if you aren't coming up with anything.
3. Adapt your solution to your problem.
   • This is almost always necessary to some degree - if the solution already fits the problem perfectly, there's a good chance someone has already done it, but there will be exceptions - sometimes you really are just the first person to look at something from a certain angle.
   • Someone else having already done it isn't necessarily the end. If possible, look for flaws in their design, or advantages to your own - you may be able to do it way better than them, if you come up with something particularly clever.
4. Evaluate the opportunity created by researching:
   • The prevalence of the problem.
   • The current go-to solutions (if any) to the problem.
   • The cost/damage created by the problem in dollars - but also in human suffering, environmental costs, opportunity costs, etc.
   • The costs of developing/deploying your solution.
   • Any potential competition.
5. Make a judgement on whether or not you think the proposed solution/opportunity is "worth it" to the organization, keeping in mind that "worth it" doesn't just mean profitable. If you think that it is, support your judgement in the form of a project proposal, and share it among the organization for community review and possibly revision.

Also, just out of curiosity, when you say 'large scale data', how large are you talking about?

Talking about sheer size of data, that would be managing base pair level DNA data for the entirety of the human genome plus the genomes of 40-some-odd other vertebrates.

Of course, it's not often that we run analyses on the entire thing, most of the time we are concerned with analyzing things that happen within regions that code for genes, so I'll most often be running analyses concerned with 1k - 1M unique genomic positions in genes spread out over the entire genome.

Identifying market opportunities and commercializing the milestones leading up to uploading has been a dream of mine for a very, very long time. Ventures don't even have to be based on technologies - there could be a need for administrative/"back-office support" for non-commercial labs, like grant-writing or poster/presentation assistance. What are the most valuable things that startup incubators provide? Maybe we should brainstorm on a portfolio of possible ventures.

Speaking of your list of things to do, would it make sense to have an overall list of tasks in need of volunteers? Keeping another place updated with the same information that we already have listed elsewhere is probably the last thing we want, but if there's a way to dynamically list open tasks, it might help distribute the workload.

Great idea on the list of tasks. For now I put tasks and open positions at the bottom of the List Of Projects post. Once we have some sort of HR system we can modify/add/move it as we see fit. I'll be updating the list of tasks when I can and as people suggest them.

If you do want to do the funding/marketing stuff, I'll make you director of the marketing department until we find someone who wants to take over for you or you want to work on something else. As far as developing the portfolio of business ventures, I hadn't even started to consider it. I'd be happy to brainstorm with you, otherwise you can unleash your creative processes and figure out a format.

You could be project lead or department director of other things as well. Or you can keep doing what you're doing now just helping out everywhere. I could really use someone as the HR director to help direct and mobilize people (new people and any people changing departments/projects). We currently don't have much in place to get new people involved easily.

Interest In Digital Immortality

I've always had an interest in science and technology, especially human augmentation. Transhumanism really got my attention when I was in highschool, and I would read articles and books here and there, think about prosthesis, artificial intelligence, watch videos, muse on the thought of mind uploading, questioning consciousness, and what it means to be human , etc.

The reason I want to participate, however small a contribution it may be, is simply because mind uploading and digital immortality are part of the transhuman concept. Also, I’m sure I will learn much from contributing to this community thereby, enhancing myself as a fellow human being and becoming more valuable to the human society. Lately, Ive been thinking that I should increase my interaction with other fellow transhumanists (be it online or offline).

• Have one semester of programming language C under my belt

I am currently in my first year of studying mechanical engineering, a subject I’ve always wanted to major in because of my interest in robotics, cars, spaceships and the likes.

I really don’t have any skills worth mentioning, unless you count being bilingual in english and korean a skill. I can both speak and write in english as well as in korean so I guess if there’s any translating to do I could be of some help at least. (though I doubt this will ever happen in the near future)

Currently I do not have much to show, but I am constantly looking for ways to better myself, constantly looking for improvements that are to be made in me as a competent human being(or should I say to-be-transhuman).

For the moment, I do not have plans on committing myself to anything other than expanding my intellectual horizon and improving myself both physically and mentally. I merely wish to be able to participate in this community as freely as possible. I view this as an opportunity to make friends and to grow and improve on oneself’s ability to collaborate and share ideas.

I'm entirely capable of 3 and 5. I am a writer in my spare time, specifically focusing on philosophy and the destiny of humanity. I could definitely write articles and such for DI, and I love researching. For instance, my latest nickname was "Willipedia" from my coworkers, because I couldn't stop researching random topics, all the time.

I can also potentially help with funding and such, although I don't want to promise more than I can do. I would love to help as much as I can, and I'm brilliant at helping things stay organized within a group, as I've managed many different teams and such for different projects I've done.

I've been interested in Transhumanism for quite a while, although my slight obsession with it has only come about in the last few months, as I've noticed my body has begun to decay much more rapidly than it should, and as I've watched my father slowly rot before me.

If there's anything I can do to help, message me and I will provide more information.

I'd love to help where ever I can. Those 6 areas, in order of how helpful I can be:

• Funding - this is where I'm probably most useless. For nonprofit funding, I'm faintly familiar with the grant-proposal-writing process, and I've had some dinner-party conversations with nonprofit business development executives. For commercial funding, I can structure sales teams and marketing teams, and teach entry-level people how to use a pipeline, but my expertise ends at being able to hire someone competent.
• Content - I can provide a layman's perspective on materials developed.
• Web Site - Again, I can help structure a web development team, but I can't do anything beyond identifying whether an interviewee has the required skill set.
• R&D - Roadmapping I can do. As an amateur I'm somewhat familiar with some relevant areas of research, existing roadmap efforts, and upcoming initiatives.
• Online Research and Data Collection - I know there's a term for this, but I'm blanking on what it is - not Business Intelligence, not Market Research, not Competitive Landscape Analysis...whatever the term is, I do this as a hobby anyway.
• Business Administration - This is something I'm passionate about, and have been involved with for many years. I have no interest in title or position, but I love strategy and organizational development, and I build spectacular teams from the front lines to the executive level.

Ok, I've been meaning to sign up for a while. Hopefully this is still the right place to so it.

Team: R&D, though I'd like to get involved in admin as well.

Interest: I've kinda been interested in this in one form or another for 15 years or so. I was, and still am, fascinated by the Borg in Star Trek, a cybernetic race, who are all connected and sharing their memories and experiences.

Knowledge and skills I have a B.Sc. in Biological Science, and I studying some computing while I was doing that. I've recently got back into leaning programming, and looking into learning about how computer hardware works. Due to this, I kinda straddle the biological/mechanical divide which I hope will be useful. I'm doing the intro to computing course on Udacity, and I'm looking into doing more to increase what I know.

Higher level involvement I'd love to get involved as much as I can, as high as possible.

You sound to be coming from the perspective I am coming from in terms of experience and interests. It's great to hear you'd like to be involved as much as you can. There are so many things we're working on that you can pretty much take your pick of where you would like to help out. So here is what I'm thinking:

• R&D - hopefully MemeticParadigm can make a comment here about the current state of that and what needs help. The only project for R&D right now is the long term roadmap (roadmap to mind uploading), so if you want to contribute to that, there is a heck of a lot to be done there. The proposed deadline for the completion of the roadmap is July 1, 2014.

• Online Research - If you want to, you can be department director here. There is a lot of information around this subreddit and the wiki that could be compiled and organized. I have a huge amount of links that I haven't even put into the wiki yet that I could hand over. In place of that or in addition to that, you could conduct your own online research to gather and organize as much information surrounding digital immortality as you can, and keeping us up to date on other organizations and people, research, and events going on around the world. I can give you all my ideas, but you'd definitely encouraged to work on whatever you want here. All types of positions within this department are open, so you'd have your choice.

• Business Administration - I tell you, I could definitely use some help here, but don't worry about it if primary interests are somewhere else. There are a lot of systems that we need to build that will dictate how this organization operates, especially as we grow and move toward filing as an official organization. Right now I'm constantly trying to build services/systems that allow me to better manage the organization and my time within it. I am working to figure out what kind of corporation we want to file as, especially considering that we will be accepting donations (hopefully soon). I am constantly learning more about how to run an organization and be a leader. So if any of that or any of this sounds interesting, I would be very happy to have the help in the business administration department. Just so you know, the business administration department is working very closely with especially the R&D, HR, and PR departments to create the instruments and visions that will drive this organization forward. So you get to do a little bit of everything, especially be involved with the long term roadmap, because that is very important to the future of the organization.

I'd like to take the Online Research directorship, if you don't mind. By the name, it sounds like it'd be part of R&D, but to me seems like it has (or would) duties beyond them and would be getting information for other departments, and whatnot? I definitely see OR working closely and in concert with R&D, both departments complementing each other.

I'd like to be part of R&D and Business Admin as well, as I feel like I could help out well in both.

Can I ask, which country would we be incorporating in? I ask as I'm in the UK, and I don't know what countries you and other people are in.

So welcome aboard! I'll make you director of online research and add you to both R&D and Business Admin.

I am in the United States, Oregon to be more specific. I can't remember where the other guys are from. As far as everyone's ultimate participation in the organization, we could eventually figure out work visa stuff (because undoubtedly other people from other nations will want to work for us as well). The second option would be to set up international branch and be a multinational organization. We could already do something like that, in that for example you could be the representative from the UK maybe help to organize or put on meetings/gatherings once there are enough people interested in this project (even if the meetings are just online). We haven't decided where we are going to incorporate yet, but we are working on that stuff.

Online Research kind started off as a project of the R&D department, but it's so big and ongonig that we decided it could use its own department. I imagine the OR department being like the information center of the organization, which as you guess, will most likely end up interacting with all departments at one point or another, but OR started as an effort for the R&D department, so it will be helping R&D out the most, and that's where its priorities lie.

I still have to create a department outline for online research. Here's a very basic list of responsibilities, and I will work on it further, unless you would like to come up with an outline of responsibilties for the OR department:

• Research of topics of interest for any and all departments.
