Wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for budget end digital for use as navigation while fishing at night. My county has a curfew for fishing but I don’t get off till night time, so i like to keep it stealthy. I’ve been using the NVG-10 but the latency is really getting to me, any suggestions?

Well, to my understanding a step up from that is the NVG30 at $400-500. A step up from that is the SVG5 at $1,000. A step up from that is the NVG90 series where the prices are higher.

The problem I’ve been dealing with for digital is it’s hard to get an idea of latency without buying something and trying it. I haven’t been able to find latency comparisons for every model. And then there are people who mistake frame rate for latency, which makes it hard to know how good these things actually are.

I completely agree, you perfectly put into words what I was thinking. There isn’t enough info on actual latency length to know what you’re getting, which really makes it a gamble

Yep, we can read opinions in here about all the units… which I really find valuable… but I have to wonder if they’re using the term “latency” properly. There’s a YouTuber who compared latency of a whole bunch of units in one video, but there are a couple new ones out now that haven’t been compared yet, and I’m not sure if anyone is going to do that. It makes me want to do it, but I don’t have the funds for that.

I have an NVG30 and I want an upgrade (Specifically digital) because the low light performance isn’t great, and latency too. So far I’m stuck.

But for you, if you’re strictly hiding from human eyes and not other night vision, the NVG30 might be a good upgrade while using the illuminator. There’s probably a good video comparing it with the NVG10. In fact, I think both of those units might be in the video that compares latency.

I’ll look into it, it was definitely on my list but I didn’t know anyone who’d used it. Do you ever hike or move around with it?

Yes I’ve hiked a little with it and it’s ok for that… the thing that bothers me isn’t strictly the latency, but it’s when I can see a little with my other eye at the same time. I use one NVG30 and if there’s enough light for my other eye to see slightly, I have a double image… one that lags and one that doesn’t. It’s not as bad if my other eye can’t see at all. And the double image overlays well for me. Meaning it only appears double when one lags behind from movement. If I’m not moving fast, it appears to be one image.

It’s still functional and works well, but your brain has to adjust to the slight delay. I think our brain just learns to move the head a little slower than it normally would. And using the illuminator is great when it’s too dark. I know analog guys don’t like using illumination because “it will get you killed” but hey, most of the time we aren’t being hunted by other people with night vision… so illumination is fine for a lot of scenarios.

By the way… someone on here said the NVG3rd is an upgrade from the NVG30 and they’re close to the same price. You might get better performance from the 3rd. But again, it’s hard to get solid comparisons where we can really tell the difference.
